AVOID!! This office scams people (and your insurance company) in both billing and in their treatment plans -- and you may not know it if you don't question them. I wish I could give them zero stars like some of the other reviews. Worst offense is they implied/did treatment on our son that was confirmed by second opinion dentist as NOT NEEDED -- which is so unethical when you think about drilling into your only set of teeth unnecessarily (see other reviews that had the same experience). They did 6 (some unnecessary) fillings all in one visit -- I believe so they can bill as much as possible -- and imply that they are doing patients a service by working quickly. Or they just know, like we did, that you'll move on to another dentist once you better understand their practice. They also billed us (and our insurance) for work that was flat-out NOT DONE. Nice receptionist refunded us (from required payment at time of service) when I called them on the work that hadn't been done. Side note: what dentist has a "pay at your visit" policy? Never seen that in my decades of dental work. People should know that standard practice is the office submits claims and bills patients after submitting claims/patient responsibility portion is clarified through insurance company -- standard at the second opinion doctor. They also charged for "desensitizing resin and anesthesia" they imply is "not covered by insurance". Every dentist I've ever gone to uses Novocain and any charges are included in the fillings claim -- also confirmed as standard at the second dentist. (No we did not get nitrous oxide anesthesia. Again, see other reviews for same experience.) They were one of our family Cigna dental plans "in network providers" in SLC, but I have contacted Cigna about them as they should be removed as a recommended dentist. Luckily we got out after one visit and found a great local dentist close by for our son. I hope you can do the same before you have to experience what we did. read more

Dr Hoybjerg is a con artist!! He said I needed 4 filings and said it was important to add extra desensitizing medication that was $50 extra/tooth not covered by insurance. I told him I didn't want or need and he insisted on 3/4. I had 3 other dentist review X-rays and they all said they did not see any decay that would warrant a filling at this time. I rushed to have the procedure done because insurance was running out and didn't wait for my home dentist to review the X-rays Silly me, I now have 4 fillings and $150 less in my pocket. I will be contacting the Dental Boards in Utah... so sad you can't trust a person who is supposed to follow a code of ethics! read more

Update: I wish I could give them 0 stars. I was told by their office that I had over 6 cavities and needed at least 2-3 crowns. I got one crown done by them and a few days later it just randomly popped out! I I Immediately tried calling them but still have not heard back! I had a gut feeling that I needed to see other dentists just to get a second opinion on my teeth and I ended up going to 3 different dentists who each told me they were shocked at what I was told at Ismile because they all told me that I didn't have ANY cavities and they didn't see any teeth that needed a crown. I found another dentist who is amazing and honest and I'm so happy I trusted my gut, and found someone so much better! read more

As a patron of this office I can't say enough about how great my visits have been. From the moment that you walk in until the moment that you leave, you feel calm and comforted. The staff is knowledgeable, fun, friendly and gentle which is great because going to the dentist is usually stressful. It's funny, the chairs that they have there are so soft and comfortable that I actually nodded off a few times during my last visit! Something else that has been a really special is how the staff interacts with each other and they interacted with me. It seemed like they were all really close friends which I thought was really cool because normally when you go the doctor or the dentist, the people seem kind of stuffy and like they don't really want to be there... That isn't the case here! All that said, I would truly recommend going to this office for any of your dental needs, they are smart, thorough, and helped me with all of my dental needs and my cleanings. I've been a patient here for waaay too long. I never see the same dentist here. I can't get in for an emergency and today's appointment made me realize that even though the office is close, the poor service isn't worth it. I had six veneers replaced here two years ago. Three of the six have broken. For the first two broken veneers the office could not get me in timely so I went to another dentist. This weekend the third one broke. I made an appointment here (thinking they would stand behind their work). Nope! Wouldn't fix it today and want more than the other office! Really! BAD service!!! read more

I wanted to love this dentist office. I wanted it to be wonderful because it appeared to be new and was within walking distance of my work. I so wanted to love it. I went in for the cleaning and the dentist told me I needed all this work done. In fact, he had an opening right then and there to do it. I told him no. That it would need to wait. The front office lady told me she was an expert on my insurance and would let me know what I was expected to pay. However, that the insurance program was down that day. But that she knew my insurance would cover the procedure. Three months later (March) I go in for the beginning of my producer. It was removing old filling and fitting my teeth for three crowns. They put in temporary crowns to last for two weeks. When I went to go in for the permanent crowns, the office was busy. The dentist was frustrated with me because the crown were high and I couldn't get the bite correct. The assistant put on the cement for the crowns and was expected to clean it up. however, I left the office with cement all over in my mouth. There was cement still attached to my crown. I paid my fees. Again, they have now had three months to check to see if my insurance would cover the procedure. In July 2019 I received an invoice for $547.45. I called my insurance company and was told that they do not cover onlays. That is fine, but I did not receive onlays. I received three crowns. I called over to the office, left a message and never received a call back. I called a few days later and I asked about the invoice. I was told that I received an onlay. And I said, no I did not. I also remarked that my crowns were still to high and it was causing more problems in my mouth. After discussing with Kim, I was told that I "Do not worry about the invoice". So I did not. Well, now it's October and I received ANOTHER invoice. I called on October 25, left a voice mail and NEVER received a phone call back. On October 30, I called again. Now I am upset and now I am not happy with how I have been treated. I am a firm believer that if I call you, you should return my call. If I tell you not to worry about an invoice. I expect NOT TO WORRY ABOUT AN INVOICE. From all I can tell about this office, is they are looking for money left and right. If they can't get it from you the first time, they will keep coming back for it. I will never go here again. And again, I WANTED TO LOVE IT. I wanted it to be the best experience. But when I have to keep paying for something that was paid for in March, it is upsetting. Especially since my crowns are still to high and still uncomfortable and still not worth the money spent. STAY AWAY. OR when you pay, make sure to state paid in full so they cannot come back to you seven months later stating that you still owe money. read more

This is a public service announcement - don't get sucked into the cheap iSmile plan a previous reviewer mentioned and start going here. Every 6 months when I went in they found five new cavities that needed to be filled "immediately" despite my financial situation (no dental insurance) and stated personal conservative approach to treatment. They also recommended I get braces on repeat every single visit despite me telling them that I had no interest on the very first visit. After my third such appointment here, I decided to seek out a second opinion and it turns out none of my 5 new "cavities" needed to be filled at all! In fact, my new dentist only saw 2 that needed to be watched (not filled) and the other three were basically non-existent. I have a zero-tolerance policy for dishonesty, especially in the dental profession when there is so much asymmetric information between patient and provider. It's horrible that they attempt to use their expertise to take financial advantage of patients by over-treating, especially those paying out of pocket. I highly recommend you stay away or at least get a second opinion before undertaking any expensive procedures here. read more

Go here. The office is very upscale Utah--happy receptionists, granite-tiled walls, and inspirational quotes about teeth vinyled to the walls in Papyrus font. My hygienist was no-nonsense and knowledgeable. And Dr. Clifford--what a love. I had cavities, jaw-clicking, and various pains from previous fillings, and my complaints were taken seriously and handled professionally. Parking is plentiful. The team at iSmile in the Avenues is such a dedicated, professional, and fun team. Starting with Kim at the front desk, my experience here was pleasant. They walked me through every step of the process and I felt so comfortable in their care. I got 3 crowns done in one visit which wasn't easy work for either of us, but they are passionate about what they do. The lead DDS, Dr. Barton, is truly such a good man. There were a handful of supporting members on the team that I can't recall by name but everyone was so amazing! They also worked great with my insurance to make sure I got the best deal for my work. 3 crowns done for less than $1500 and they are literally perfect. They even adjusted the temporaries because they were hurting and did so swiftly, and also adjusted the permanents slightly just to make sure they were perfect. When all was done they even called me to check in on me and sent me a post card. If you're reading a bad review about iSmile, it's either super old or just exaggerated or false. Lets start with the good news. These guys offer probably one of the best deals for an exam and cleaning in SLC. I shopped around and did not find anyone that came close to their deal of two cleanings, exam and x rays for less than $100. I believe they offer this cheap exam and cleaning as a loss leader and then nail you with a large price to fill cavities. That being said they did a good job with the cleaning and exam. Nice office space as well. What annoyed me the most about Dental Designs was the terrible scheduling. I scheduled my original appointment only to have them call and move the appointment because they were running behind. Ok no big deal lets schedule it for a few days out so we wont have anymore problems. I didn't expect to get several more calls from them trying to squeeze me into their gaps in scheduling because they had cancellations. I also felt more like a number than a patient/ client. They break down the process into stations and it feels like you are being herded through some sort of factory farming process; receptionist, cleaning, more cleaning, and then the doctor. Once I got to see the doctor he moved the chair up and down and smiled at me. I am twenty nine years old not five. What I am trying to say is I didn't feel the personal attention I have gotten at other doctors offices and it was not the most professional. Overall I had three cavities and it was going to cost around $470 to fix them. I scheduled only to cancel two days later when I found a better deal. My new dentist recommended only filling on of the three cavities for a much cheaper price and I felt like a patient and not just another number. You can find a good review for that dentist on my profile. In summation I would recommend them for the cleaning and exams because of the price but would not have anything else done here. Drill, fill, and bill. I also had a friend that had a filling fall out that was done at this office. A new website wouldn't hurt. read more

I love this dental office! It is under new ownership (iSmile) and I love their plan! The staff is so nice and so caring. Dr. Erickson is the best dentist I have had in a while, and his associate Dr. Clifford is really great too. They are great about reminding you of an appointment and their easy text to confirm an appointment system is highly convenient and simplistic! Their assistants and staff always treat you like part of the family, I only go to Dental Designs even though it is a 30 minute drive because of my experiences. Went for a cleaning. I have always had good oral health (I have never even had a cavity). The dentist said that I had "a bunch" of cavities and advanced periodontal disease. When pushed he said around 15, but was hesitant to give me an exact number. Wanted to get me in for dental work immediately that would have cost over $5,000. When I asked what I could be doing at home to improve my oral health for the future he said "I can give you a prescription toothpaste but that's it." He was very concerned with getting in and out, and I didn't feel adequately prepared at all. The hygienist didn't even complete my cleaning because she said it didn't make sense to clean them since I would have to come in for a more intense cleaning later. Since that was the service that I paid for I was quite upset. I ended up getting a second opinion and the new dentist said that only had 3 small cavities and very mild gingivitis that would improve with home care. The hygienist and front desk clerk were both very kind. The office was clean, and provided a calming atmosphere. However, I do feel that if a dentist doesn't promote good oral health and take the time to help their patients do better than those things don't matter as much. The front desk staff is very kind, however I do think that this business is focused on making money first and foremost, and amplify problems in order to get more money out of you. If they don't teach you how to improve your health then they can fix more problems in the future. The dentist didn't give us adequate time in the exam and was very hesitant to answer questions. Gave vague and short answers that were not helpful. When pressed answered as quickly as possible and immediately left the room. The trip to ismile caused a lot of unnecessary stress. I try to be very fair in leaving reviews, but this was a truly terrible experience for my family. read more

I mailed my payments since the beginning of this month, waiting for the check to be clear from my bank. I called and asked if they received it, no answer and hangups. This is very unexceptionable. Same with the St. George clinic, I send the payment to them since November 2018 until two months later without notifying me and other patients that their clinic are permanently closed...Above all, their dentists and hygienists did their job as a professional, but I'm very dissatisfied with the billing department. If they can update their website by adding Pay Bill online, then that will be easier and less stressful than waiting for the checks to be clear. read more

I used iSmile in March of 2019. I did this through Living Social with a coupon that clearly indicated I had purchased a "One-Year Dental Coverage Program" that included "Two cleanings ... Up to four x-rays during each cleaning, Two exams with oral-cancer screening." After having my first appointment I attempted to schedule a follow up within the year. I was told that would not be possible as they had changed their rules and a second appointment would cost more money. Well, they can change their rules but if they sell a package BEFORE changing the rules that is not acceptable. I think it is dishonest and unethical. Think twice before using this office. read more

Becky, dental hygienist, is patient and extremely good at not only cleaning but educating patients on the 'why's and how's' of proper dental maintenance I can do at home in-between cleanings. I did initially enjoy my experience at iSmile in the Avenues the hygienist was great and thorough. Dr. Barton was not professional, the first thing he said to me was "You look like you could be my kid's age." (I'm 26) and later said that my molars looked like his. (He looks like a 60-year-old man). Later when going over my treatment plan he recommended that I have 6 fillings and 3 tooth extractions, for a total of $1,163. I asked if this meant that I had cavities and he said, "Its like if you have a nail in your tire, you can drive around with it but when you take it out you are going to have to get a whole new tire." I left confused and alarmed, so I wanted a second opinion I drove to Colorado to see my uncle who is a dentist. When I visited him ismiles sent him the wrong x-rays (HIPPA violation?). So after another set of x-rays and an evaluation, my uncle determined that I certainly didn't need any of the recommended fillings and that my wisdom teeth didn't need extraction, and I don't have any cavities.
