The woman here (I wish I didn't forget her name cause she was the sweetest and very helpful) gave me holistic suggestions to my inflammatory knee swelling and pain. It's Only Natural is a great little grocery store on Main Street in Middletown. It's small, but this might be a one stop shop, if it just wasn't so expensive. There's everything in this store, organic produce, juices, vitamins and supplements, chocolate and candy I've never seen before, they even have a little section where you can get a fresh smoothie or a sandwich. There's an area where you can sit with your food. They even have a post office in this little grocery store. But it is expensive.. a box of cereal is $7.49, and it's not even a large box. They had a 5 pound jar of local honey for $50.00. I stopped in to pick up some crackers for my guacamole, I picked some really nice ones for only $3.29, but half the bag was air. This is not the fault of the store of course. It's a lot of fun to walk through a store where everything looks new, and innovative. I really like this small, wannabee While Foods in Middletown. I mean in the best way possible. They always have deals on their products with something or another being on sale most days. They have really good soups which change daily, with flavors like: broccoli cheddar, buffalo chicken, chicken tortilla... so many different flavors that they've had but they keep 3 out on a daily basis. They're also the area where you can order fresh made sandwiches or juices. The juices are definitely refreshing and feel "clean," if that makes sense. Try them all, they're yummy! read more

I've been shopping this market for over 20 years. I go back to the days when the restaurant and the store were one, back when it was in its original Main Street location. Before there was a "NORA". This market has always been slightly overpriced, but it has gotten better over the years. They have also improved on their selection of goods in all of the departments. The gluten free selection is one of the best in the area. They have pantry staples, frozen foods and bakery items. I recently purchased a pint of Halo Top here for $6.50. It's a little pricey, but this Diabetic needs her ice cream! The prepared foods have come a long way from the days of egg rolls and pizza (though the egg rolls can still be found in the case). There are assorted salads, pastas, sandwiches and other miscellaneous goodies. While here you can visit the juice bar or even drop off a letter at their USPS counter. I have been frequenting this establishment for years. This is the only place I know of where one can get raw milk anywhere in CT--which is a huge plus if you are looking for it. Juice bar is great---also plenty of sandwich choices--vegan and otherwise, and also salads,soups available which one can order. Also, a great place to buy quality supplements, especially if one is trying to avoid GNC and other chain vitamin/supplement stores. Comparable to online and other store prices. I have also gotten some great sale deals on organic cleaners, dish washing liquids, soaps and such which once I tired I l really liked. The store is a tad small, and the prices can be expensive when not on sale. However, definitely worth shopping at if in the area. Jack thought it tasted sour which I should like. I love acidity but still thought it was had a strange flavor. I even commented on organics, saying they often don't have the flavor I like. If you shop the sale items it's a decent place, and they carry "The Bridge" a locally made and properly fermented tofu and the price point on that is the same as everywhere else. This health food store is incredible. I'm from San Diego, CA and I visit CT once a year and my first stop is always this place. I cannot eat gluten, soy or dairy due to a health ailment (and I'm a vegetarian,) so I have VERY limited places to eat; It's only natural (in addition to their restaurant) literally saves my life. What I don't like as much are the prices, as they're about as high as Whole Goods, if not even more steep in some cases. I got a small container with five falafel balls and tahini. It was $7, but I was in the mood for it, so I begrudgingly shoveled out the dough. Look for sales here and you can find some good deals. Today they had a section with nuts and dried fruits that were half off. I would buy more frozen foods and produce here, IF the prices were lower. Sometimes the selection is not as "fresh" as I'd like, especially considering what they sell for. All in all, if you're nearby, it's worth a stop, but I wouldn't recommend go out of your way to come here. I was excited when this place opened and disappointed the first time I visited. The selection is poor for such a large area (way too much space dedicated to silly greeting cards and bath products). Fruit wasn't very fresh. Staff seemed rude and uncaring. I heard a woman asking about a specific product and one of the guys (who appeared to be in charge) respond flatly "We don't have it." Not- we have something similar or we'll get it for you, just "we don't have it." Being a new store and with such a small market they're catering to, you'd think they would be more accommodating. I absolutely love It's Only Natural. They have a great selection of organic and natural food, beauty and baby products as well as holistic care products. I feel that the prices here are very comparable or even cheaper than organic and natural food products at your local supermarket. The market is very quaint and quiet and you almost never have to wait in a long line. I usually come here for groceries esp fresh fruit and veggies. I'm also very interested in natural oils and they have a great selection. I use my oils for skin care needs. There is a organic juice bar in the back and it's pretty amazing. The smoothie/juice guy has been notably rude to me, which is too bad given their smoothies being one of their best features. Pro tip: You pay for your smoothie/juice at the main counter, not at the smoothie/juice counter. They carry a lot of organic/natural/vegan brands, including things not accessible at chain venues. The prices vary from great deal to great dent in the wallet. A lot of items are on sale at any given time. Interesting fact: A Middletown post office location operates in the store. You'll stand opposite the desk as you wait in line far longer than you ought to. read more

Delicious. - Hey, at least there's something in town, right? - Large gluten-free section (although I'm not, it still has a good selection) Cons: - It is really expensive and there are other options. Heck, even Price Chopper has good prices on Quorn. And it's not a little expensive, it's about double going rate expensive (umboshi paste is a whopping $20 here and $10 or less elsewhere). Frankly the co-op in Saybrook is a better option. It seems like they're stuck in the loop of "not big enough, so it's expensive; but it's expensive so they don't have the customers to expand" (IONM should consider becoming a co-op). - Their selection isn't great overall. This is a small place and things get left by the wayside e.g. (no plain non-dairy yogurt). I haven't found any employees that were particularly rude, so maybe they've addressed that. I do go here on occasion, but don't find it useful enough to give it more than Three Stars. read more

But I guess that's how they hook you on the beauty products! I opted for some prepared lunch items, and a freshly made juice. I had the beet/ginger juice both days. It was delicious, but $4! I thought for a small, the price was a bit high. The pre-made salads I had both days were good. I really like the falafel platter! I know most people have labeled this place expensive, but if you live in Middletown like me and want to walk to a grocery store, this is one of the only options you're going to get. The selection is limited if you're use to Stop and Shop...but if you're looking for Whole Foods type selection of Organic/Natural sauces, vinegars, oils, tofu, cereal, chips, spices, nuts, coffee, and a myriad of lotions & potions then ION Market is all you can ask for! I like to frequent ION Market when I don't have time after work to run up to Glastonbury WF, I think of it as the more expensive but more convenient annex. The produce here is also very limited, but well priced (well...better priced than the dry goods) and they carry all you need (aka the basics). They do make sandwiches/paninis and soup at lunchtime, and they also sell fairtrade organic coffee for anyone who's lookin! And if you're gluten free, ION carries an entire DEPARTMENT of gluten free goods. Here are other random things you should know: -ION doesn't have a meat counter. They sell Applegate Farms brand deli meat, bacon, etc. -There is a post office inside! -PARKING LOT! -Bulk section is AMAZING. Almost weekly I frequented this store for a couple of years. Except for one employee, there was no recognition of your presence by the managers who did not smile or say hello. Then, I found out that the male manager there was down right unfriendly refusing to refund a $4.00 milk which was spoiled. It was $4!! I decided I would go else where to spend my money. I started driving to Glastonbury Whole Foods which I found out was infinitely better than IONS in terms of variety and price. WF has recently lowered their organic vegetable price by about a third so it is definitely cheaper and fresher than IONS. To make life even better, I discovered WHOLE FOODS DELIVERY. It is just the best! You can order items that IONS does not stock at a lower price delivered to your house within 2 hours! WHOLE FOODS deliver vegetables, fruits, meat, bread, bottled water, prepared food boxes you can cook yourself etc etc and sends them in a special bag for the perishables. If you get their credit card, they give back 5%. By the way, Whole Foods has positive vibes and they will work with you. When an item I bought was spoiled, all I had to do was to call them and tell them the date I bought the item. They looked it up on their computer and refunded right away. I did not have to show up with receipts or spoiled item to prove that I was not trying to cheat them out of $4!! read more

I visited this place in March 2011. Wow, I think every single one of the employees here were rude. Almost like they all got pissed off when I walked in. Never any eye contact with me, no hello when I walked in, nobody would help me. Had to break up the conversation between 3 of them so that I could pay...and of course they were annoyed at me for that. It was very strange indeed. Prices were very expensive and selection was relatively small. I drove out of the parking lot thinking that I must have been in the Twilight Zone or something. Just a very negative energy inside those 4 walls. Very strange and NOT a place I would EVER visit again. Now I do enjoy the restaurant that has the same name and it is located down the street.
