Oh man. Ivanhoes taste like my childhood. There is an overwhelming amount of options for ice cream sundaes and shakes (over 100 to be exact). However, the best time to go is strawberry season. Their ice cream combined with fresh strawberries is a heavenly concoction. They also have really good tater tots, if you're into those. The only downside is the wait time. This is the first time we have ever been disappointed in Ivanhoes. The food was below average in that my wife's soup was tepid. Her hamburger must have been left under the warmer because the bun was crunchy and the meat was lukewarm. My ham and cheese must also have spent more than a little time under the heat lamp. The only positive food item was the tater tots. It appears they are understaffed and the staff were all working, but there was little in the way of serving. No apologetic look or words. Little to no eye contact. This is a first and while not enough to end our habit of the trek off the highway, an hour for this meal is way too much and repeats of tonight's experience will end the justification for taking the Upland exit. Fairly busy for a Sunday evening, but we still managed to snag seating for 7 without too much of a wait. They're really known for the ice cream, but I was hungry and wanted to try a chili dog. Turned out to be a good choice, as the dog was good and their house-made chili (plus onions and mustard) a rather tasty addition. Went back up to order ice cream. Got a "Toffee Coffee" with caramel instead of hot fudge, so a plus for them doing a substitution and getting it right. The ice cream itself? Good, but nothing remarkable. Some of the chains (e.g., Cold Stone and Marble Slab) have richer, creamier ice cream. If you're in the area it's worth a drop-in, but I wouldn't make a road trip for it. read more

My dad went to Taylor University. One of my parents first dates was at Ivanhoe. The food is amazing and the ice cream is even better. It's almost always packed. (I've never physically been there when it wasn't packed like a nightclub.) I'm getting emotional just thinking about it. It is a true Indiana landmark restaurant. If you are from Indiana and you have never been to ivanhoe's you are not a proper Hoosier! And that is a fact not an opinion. Why Diners Drive-Ins and Dives have never done an episode there has baffles me for years. Last time I went there the Strawberry Shortcake almost made me cry. Ivanhoe's skewed my perception of reality (as did growing up in Indiana) when I went here every summer for 9 years after basketball camp at Taylor University. 10 days away from home and at camp always had a wrap party at Ivanhoe's with the family, and other campers. A mighty glorious day: we all would have our camp shirts on, and roll up with our 7-deep posse of grandparents & siblings. We -- the campers -- were the shepherds to the 100 flavors of Ivanhoe's. Yeah. 100 flavors. I visited Ivanhoe's 10 years later, and now a grown adult, in late-July... and the same exact thing is still happening: campers and families slurping down God's sauce. Taylor University is a dry campus, and it seemed Upland in general was pretty dry... so... ice cream is their indulgence and they indulge well. Packed house, long lines, sticky tile, rambunctious kids, large families... I wouldn't want it any other way. Ivanhoe's is a fat kids dream. Plain and simple. I used to come here when I was going to Ball State. We would drive up and feel like we were in the town in the movie "Footloose" (no dancing allowed at Taylor University). They didn't have Kevin Bacon, but Ivanhoe's is better than Kevin Bacon. I used to live in Fort Wayne, so going to Ivanhoe's was a special treat that we would get maybe a few times a year. But now, much to my sweet tooth's delight (and wallet and waistline's dismay), I live in Indy and a short detour to this spectacular drive-in on my way to visit family in The Fort is easy peasy and a regular occurrence. Their huge selection of ice cream treats - 100 different sundaes and 100 different shakes - means there's something for everyone (plus you can customize these flavors or make your own concoction if you want). Their food is delicious, reasonably priced, and comes in large portions. Seriously, I don't recommend eating a whole tenderloin sandwich and order of onion rings before chowing down on a big, chocolatey sundae... it's doable, but you might just hate yourself after. What's really impressive is that they can get through a pretty long line for ice cream very quickly. The workers know what they're doing and do it well. So, what are the downsides? Well, the only time you'll experience a delay is when you order some food, as they seem to make everything fresh. This means waiting a bit for that order of onion rings I mentioned earlier, but I think it's worth it to have them hot and fresh out of the fryer. Also, the place tends to fill up quickly during prime hours. There's a lot of tables, but a lot of people want ice cream. If you've got a big group I would recommend getting there before / after their peak hours so you can get enough tables to seat everyone. Ivanhoe's is my all time favorite stop between Indy and Fort Wayne. The food is wonderful, the ice cream is delicious, the service is quick, and the prices are reasonable. I'm originally from the neighboring town of Gas City, and Ivanhoe's is an institution in Grant County! They are best known for their ice cream, but have delicious food too. The food: I personally love their fried chicken club with some fries. My hubby likes their grilled pork tenderloin. You can't beat the food being made fresh upon order. But understand it's not "fast-food"; you won't get your meal within 3 minutes of your order. It's more like anywhere from 5-15 minutes, depending on how busy they are. The ice cream: As stated previously, 100 different shakes and 100 different sundaes, is there any more to say? These also don't include any concoction you choose to make up yourself, which they do encourage. Your only limitation is your own imagination. And I warn those of you who think you can handle their banana split on your own; unless your a competitve eater, their banana splits and large sundaes are 2 person sundaes. This place is highly recommended. I loved it growing up and love it today. I recently went to ivanhoes and was so disappointed with what I saw given the COVID-19 pandemic. The restaurant was PACKED. The staff only had their masks covering their mouths with their noses out. Staff were handling ice cream and containers without gloves. After ordering, you are given a pager, so you would think they would make customers wait outside for their orders instead of allowing them to cram next to each other next to the ice cream counter. Additionally, their status on google states no dine in but multiple friends and families were sitting inside to eat. Masks were not enforced by the establishment. The owners should be ashamed of their response to COVID. read more

This place was highly recommended by several sources so we made to 40 mile drive to try their ice cream. What a disappointment. There were only 4 people in front of us in the order line but it still took almost 15 minutes to place our order. The place is basically staffed by teenagers and is very disorganized. The kid that made my shake wore gloves to make the shake then wiped his hands on his pants and with out changing gloves peeled and cut up a banana to put in my shake. Who knows how many days he has worn those pants. Very unsanitary. I refused the shake and asked for someone else to make a new one. Disorganized and unsanitary. Won't go back here again. read more
