I travel a lot and have stopped at Ugalde's several times over the past couple of years. I recently stopped and had a burger - which used to be great. Not cheap, but great and worthy of mention. No longer the case, apparently. During a recent visit, the burger had a noticeably much smaller burger patty. I felt like asking, "Where's the beef?" Not in the Ugalde's burger. Lots of lettuce, didn't skimp on the onion or pickles, but not much beef. I ran out of beef patty long before I finished the burger. Won't be stopping at Ugalde's again. read more

Stop by for a brunch. Enjoyed the fresh brew coffee, and ordered the chicken tamale special. I always substitute double refried beans because I do not like rice. Hey, Terry and I went to this restaurant for the first time today. It WILL NOT be our last either. I make radio commercials several stations around the country, including 95.9 KISS FM - COUNTRY in Wabash. KISS sent us a spot for Ugaldes Family Restaurant. We decided to make the 30 min drive from Fort Wayne and see if it was as good as it sounded... we are NOT disappointed!! Terry had some scrambled eggs, ham, American fries and 1 piece of French toast. More than enough food... had to take some home... I tasted her French toast and it had to be about the best French Toast I have ever had... I didn't use butter OR syrup... it was awesome! I had the UGALDE'S OMELETTE and hash browns, bowl of peaches (canned but good) and an English muffin... again, very large portion... very tasty breakfast. I noticed they had an extensive menu... including appetizers, salads, sandwiches, burgers, Italian favorites, Mexican, International flavors and of course American favorites like steaks, chops, ribs and even country fired steak. ... oh, a variety of fish prepared your way! AND breakfast anytime... and dessert... cream pie, cheesecake, ice cream sundaes, milk shakes... wow!! 5-stars is a pretty bold review, however, I didn't feel that they deserved anything less! First off they have truck parking with very easy access on and off the freeway. The waitresses were super friendly upon us entering and made us feel as though we were coming into their home. Came to our table immediately to get our drink order. When she came back with our coffee, we weren't quite ready to order, so she asked if I needed any suggestions. After much deliberation due to the enormous menu served all day, I chose the Farmer's Omelette, grits, and a biscuit. The omelette was cooked to perfection and had more than enough "stuff" inside. Biscuit was soft and moist with just enough crisp on the outside to keep it from falling apart. Grits were decent. My husband ordered Steak & Eggs- he is the worst steak critic and it's never good when we go out... He ordered it rare and it was cooked perfectly according to him and was well-seasoned, but not overly. They also had raw horseradish for it which increases his review rating Eggs over-easy were perfect. Coffee kept flowing without asking. Restrooms were spotless and had a faint bleach smell to them Parking lot was very spacious and could easily hold 12-15, 18-wheelers....knowing this, it was a very clean parking lot where I'm guessing most truck drivers respect them enough not be be pigs and leave their usual droppings everywhere. There was a large dumpster at the back of the lot by the truck parking for all that. All and all, this was a VERY welcome stop with above-average food and service. Passing through on a cross country road trip, our stomachs started telling us it was time to stop for breakfast. Ugaldes was the first place to pop up for breakfast in the area. We walked into a local diner for the area. Everything on the inside of the diner probably could've used a bit of updating. The waitresses were very pleasant and welcomed us to sit. They offer a good variety of breakfast menu items with very reasonable pricing. I decided on the Ugalde's Skillet. They load the dish up with hash browns, bacon, ham, sausage, mushrooms, green peppers and onions topped with cheese & eggs any style. The hash brown could have been cooked a little longer to add some crisp to it. The amount of food was pretty large and filled me up until the afternoon. We stopped here on our way home from Weaver Popcorn and the food was really good. Their menu is huge. I wouldn't have thought the food would be very good with such a large menu, but it was. I had the Italian Sub with the Giardiniera and it was super good. The fries are al la carte, but they give you enough fries for two people to eat. My wife had the mushroom swiss burger and she really like it. The burger was bigger than a whopper. It was probably 1/2lb burger. The atmosphere is that over locals and travel traffic (interstate is right next to it.) This is one of only a handful of restaurants that locals have to choose from without driving a distance. Stopped by for lunch on a Wednesday. I've been by many times. I ordered the club sandwich with fries and the wings. The club was fine, but nothing special. I order a club almost everywhere I go. The fries were crispy. My order took over 30 minutes to get and at I point the waitress stopped by and said the wings take 20 minutes. We have driven by this place numerous times . The reviews were good so we decided to try it. Nothing special about the decor . Very similar to a truck stop diner . We were greeted promptly and told to sit wherever we wanted . The menu was huge and so were the prices for this type of atmosphere. My husband got the tuna salad on a croissant. That's basically what it was . No sides except a mound of dill pickle chips . It was ok . I chose the fettuccine with shrimp . The portion was huge and somewhat soupy and lacked much flavor . It came with one side (l chose broccoli)and garlic toast . Definitely overpriced at $18.99. We will give it another try as other items looked good. Service was spotty . Day two of our road trip to San Diego... stop 2. We bailed on Fort Wayne with a quickness and got right on the road... right into more blizzard and ice conditions. This of course seems to be how Sarah and I prefer to travel. If there aren't weather advisories being released hourly and cars, semis, and four wheel drive driving soccer moms in the ditches... we just aren't happy. So, my little '03 Audi A4 decides to light up the dashboard with an odd looking alarm, and instead of freaking out, we pull over at the next exit and investigate. Pulling into the nearest diner (for what is good investigative behavior other than to do it over diner coffee), grab the manual, and head in. Immediately in love with the place, we take our manual and sit ourselves at the nearest electric outlet (oh yeah, our cell died too) and ordered up some coffee. Upon further review of the large Denny's laminated-like menu, we found the Dixie Something: biscuits and gravy topped by two eggs cooked to order. Sarah looked up at me and said, "What the hell, let's split 'em." "Yeah, sure, that way we can split a salad at lunch. Good idea," I replied. The biscuits were your classic country drop biscuits, the gravy a good sausage creamy wonder (not too buttery, not too bland) and the eggs were a perfect over medium. Now at a diner like this, right off the highway and next to the BP, the eggs often come out a nuclear neon puffy paint yellow... but not here! These were fresh off the farm eggs. And how can we tell? Well, Sarah's from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, that's how. Tip: save room for pie, as a local bakery supplies the pies here, and while I didn't have any, I took a gander at the Strawberry Rhubarb and it looked TASTY! Postscript: we did find out that the '03 Audi A4 (any further mention to be made by addressing it as Jocelyn) was merely telling us that she disabled the traction control system because of the sheer sheets of ice that we were attempting to traverse.
