My wife and I were visiting the James Dean museum in Fairmont on a nice sunny Saturday. The owner of the museum (Lenny) suggested driving a few miles north to Payne's for lunch. It's a few minutes off the highway, but certainly doesn't feel like you're in Gas City, IN. It looks like they added on an outdoor space recently. Nothing too extravagant, but nice enough for lunch. A nice younger man took care of us on the patio. The menu was quite eclectic and unique. The tortilla chips and cold bean dip was a great way to start. For years I have wanted to try Payne's since I have driven by the sign on the interstate so many times. So glad I finally did. The restaurant was a lot more kitschy than I was expecting, which I loved. Our waitress had a wonderful energy. She was very knowledgeable about the menu. The menu had several unique items. I ordered a Scottish soda called IRN BRU. I love trying food and drinks from around the world. It tasted like an Orange Crush soda. Our waitress said they were known for their Cauliflower soup. It was cold outside so soup sounded perfect. I also got a pepper jack grilled cheese. The soup came in a huge bowl. The combo of the soup and grilled cheese was very filling. It helps when the man who greets you has a British accent because you just know there's a reason this is in the middle of nowhere. I almost think it's so good the hospital decided to build by it just so they could eat it everyday. Payne's has been on my radar for a while now and it's worth a stop. I'm sorry I waited so long! The place is a mismatched delight. Old pillows on seats were the cutiest. Very comfortable. Very cute. We started with complimentary chips and bean dip. It's delicious, but a bit weird to be at a British pub and start with a Mexican delight. We had the recommended starter of bruschetta and it was delicious! Very non-traditional as it was warm with melty cheese and bacon. The soup of the day was a tasty lil blue cheese and broccoli number. My bangers and mash hit the spot with proper Irish bangers and smothered in an oniony gravy. My hubs had fish and chips, which was a huge portion and the fish was perfection. I was a lil surprised by the chips (fries) as they were not quite like what you'd find at a proper chippy. In fact it is my favorite restaurant of all time. Sunday we stopped again. I had the British chicken curry and the fatoush. It was amazing as usual. That fatoush is so refreshing! My wife had the pork chop which comes with these amazing mashed potatoes with mustard seasoning that will blow your mind. She can never finish because it's so much food, which is OK with me because I help her out some. My favorite way to eat this is to mix a little mashed potato, mustard and pork chop together into one delicious bite. We were too full for dessert, but the times that we had the dessert here were spectacular as well. This place is a hidden gem! We are traveling to parents house for a visit and landed here for lunch! Totally the best British food ever. We had the Fish & Chips, and also a grilled Gouda and goat cheese sandwich with the sweet potato, apple and ginger soup. They also give you complimentary chips with a black bean and tomato dip. The mugs of tea are literally huge mason jars! Our waitress is amazing, we were allowed to have our golden retriever outside on the patio, for a private area they had little sections squared off where we sat with our dog, she brought a dog bowl out with water and an entire container of turkey for him! Wow! We stopped here on our way up to Angola and we were pleasantly surprised at how good this spot was. The fish and chips are the best I've had in the US. They also had Irn-Bru which was exciting. My husband had a Guinness, while out of a can was still very good. The burger was the only item that wasn't 5 stars, but why would you order a burger at a place that has fish n chips, bangers & mash, and beef stew & Yorkshire pudding. We decided to come here on the 4th of July from Indy after hearing how amazing the fish and chips are...people were accurate. The food: We were given complimentary bean dip and chips. The bean dip was fabulous and had great complex flavors. I got the cock-a-leekie soup and the medium (smallest) fish and chips. My husband got the fattoush as his side with the large fish and chips. The cock-a-leekie soup was different but in a good way. The broth was vinegary and the chicken was tender. The prunes were actually great to balance out the tartness. The fattoush was bright and served as a great palate cleanser. Now to the main event: the fish and chips. Each piece of fish is giant. The medium comes with one filet and the large has 2. The batter on the fish was very crispy and the fish itself was thick. The chips were crispy and after dousing my plate in malt vinegar, they retained most of their crisp. Service and Decor: Our server was attentive and offered to explain anything. The decor is legit British pub style. The pillows in the booths added some comfort and whimsy. The Fish was crispy on the outside and had that melt-in-your mouth feel on the inside. The fries were good as well. They also have complimentary bean dip with chips when you sit down. What a wonderful surprise! My husband and I were traveling from Alabama to Michigan and Gas City turned out to be a good place to stop for the night. We had the best meal I've ever had in Indiana! The staff was friendly, and we only had to wait a few minutes for a table. It is a small restaurant with a cozy vibe and mismatched dishes. I loved it. My son tried the root beer--again, a generous portion and wonderfully homemade--my husband water, and myself coffee, which was nothing special. When we walked in the music playing was a song by the Smiths, so I was already in love with the place! The restaurant was medium-busy but the service was good nevertheless - our waitress was attentive without being intrusive. We were given complimentary bean dip and some taco chips as soon as we were seated. I ate a little of it - it was excellent but I didn't eat much of it because I wanted to save room for my meal. I ordered the celebrated fish and chips, with the puréed cauliflower/cheddar soup as an appetizer. It was a blistering hot day but I was glad I ordered the soup, as it was delicious, served with a chunk of toasted bread on the side. As I ate it I was trying to figure out the recipe, ha. Then came the main course - the fish and chips. Okay, I have been searching for decent, genuinely English-style fish and chips in this state. Many have claimed to have them but NONE has delivered - until I ate at Payne's. Whatever the secret is to authentic English fish, this place has got it! I haven't tasted fish like this since eating at the Earl's Court Pub in London back in 2019. The French fries on the side were not proper English chips, but no matter - they were FABULOUS. This place is an hour and a half drive from where I live, but it was worth it. My (English) husband had a Newcastle Brown Ale in a bottle, the fattoush as an appetizer and the British chicken curry. He didn't like the fattoush (he said it was too vinegary for his liking, but he ate it anyway) and he wasn't a fan of the curry because it wasn't hot enough for him. I didn't try any of his food so I can't speak to that, but I did have a sip of the beer and it was great (I was driving so I only tasted it, although I would've liked to have had an entire bottle to myself). After the meal we were full but we wanted to try the desserts so we ordered the sticky toffee, the bread pudding and an Oreo milkshake (for my son) to go. The toffee and the bread pudding each came with a container of premium vanilla ice cream on the side. When we got home we had the desserts (they did travel well, even though it took us over an hour to get home). The ice cream was delicious, the sticky toffee was too sweet for my taste (it tasted like molasses to me - my husband said it tasted like treacle to him). I tried the bread pudding and it was AWESOME (wish I'd ordered that instead of the sticky toffee!). I didn't try the Oreo milkshake, but my son said it was excellent. The only thing I really didn't like about the meal was the bill - with tip it came to around $100. However, I believe you get what you pay for, so I didn't mind it all that much. I really wish this place was located closer to central Indiana, where I live. Even though it's somewhat of a drive, I would go back here for special occasions. read more
