I recently dropped into this store looking for fabric to cover my RV cushions. I had visited numerous places and could not find anything that pleased me. Much to my surprise as this is not a large store, I found lovely fabric and some of it was outdoor quality. I brought two different materials that complemented each other. I had a total of 10 cushions covered (one was 75" by 34") and 4 small pillow covers made. I was very pleased with the quality and service! If I need fabric this shop will be my first stop! read more

Ok here was my experience; So I randomly found this store because I needed some cotton-spandex fabric for a project of mine. Parking for the shop is rough even when I was there at 10:30am so you'll probably have to park far or you can take mass transit so you won't have to worry about parking. As I entered the compact store it was luckily empty (I hate crowded stores). I wasn't greeted or anything which was odd but, I found Angel near the back end corner of the store too busy with something else and didn't pay me any mind. I doubt he even knew I was there until I asked him where cotton-spandex fabric would be. So the customer service was lacking. A great thing was there was A LOT of fabric to choose from, but I do wish he would take some time to label and organize the fabrics. It will not only be easier to look for certain fabrics but will look a lot more cleaner and professional! The prices were so/so and I ended up finding a thicker black wool-spandex fabric for 15 bucks a yard because I couldn't find what I wanted, 2 spools of black thread, and 2 zippers. In the end, I would say I'll go back because of a good and diverse selection but a little organization goes a long way! I'm sure next time I'll find some great fabrics. read more

Excellent service and upholstery skills. I needed back and seat cushion covers for a mid-century modern chair. Angel was extremely helpful and knowledgeable when I ordered the covers which he was able to complete before the time promised. The sewing was excellent; he clearly takes pride in his craftsmanship. His prices were more than reasonable, they were a bargain (I purchased similar covers last year from another upholsterer on Bay Ridge Ave and paid almost twice as much). I just visited this fabric store today. I was pattern making today and in need of muslin fabric to make a top for a fitting w/ my client and here I am in Brooklyn, really not wanting to go all the way into the garment district just for fabric on a Saturday. Besides, most places in the garment district are not even open on a Saturday. Well, I found this place online - just took a ride on the "R" going downtown. It's doesn't take too long if you already live on the R in Brooklyn. They are open until 5:30pm on Saturdays, the man who helped me was really nice. The store is small but had a nice selection of all different types of fabrics. Many printed cottons for $3 a yard and I got exactly the muslin I needed for $2.50 a yard. I will definitely go back when I'm in a crunch. read more

I'd been covering my couch cushions with a tapestry for about 4 months, dreading the thought of spending hundreds of dollars to reupholster them. They were in terrible condition, and I was afraid I wouldn't be able to find a fabric that would match the faded navy blue from a 10+ yr couch. After moving across Brooklyn to a new apartment, I decided it was time to revamp this couch! The rest of the story is short and sweet. J & A did a fab job with both of my large couch cushions. They had so many fabrics that I was able to choose from- matching the old navy. Every detail was paid attention, even a zipper pocket to hide the zipper. AND it was very affordable! They have floor to ceiling of fabrics. There are many colors, patterns and materials. The front bin has many scraps at great price it's a steal. For 6 dollars left with 5 different types of fabrics that were a yard a piece I would give it 5 stars if they had other sewing supplies and books. I can't wait to go back there to find fabric to do a new project. I'm glad that I don't have to go to Manhattan. read more

Nice little small business. Father and son work in there and they do good work. I needed curtains stitched by them and they did a great job and gave me a good price. I got the fabric in the store for a reasonable price, and since i bought the fabric in house he stitched me curtains for a good price. Great selection for a smaller store and ask the guy for any help he's always willing to help. If your in a browsing mood they will leave you alone which is nice (I hate places that follow and bother you). Its a gem so hopefully you find it! read more

My mom is very much of DIY person. I knew I wanted to change up the decor at home so I went to her go to fabric store for some fabric to reupholstering throw pillows. So glad we found exactly what I needed. There is tons of fabrics to choose from and reasonably price considering the location and what you would just pay for to buy a brand new piece of furniture or decor in general. Angel used to work for the two ladies at Dan Sacks which was just down the street from where this place J&A is now. If you never went to Dan Sacks, you totally missed out on an experience. Anyway -- Angel has the same connections as those ladies, but a lot less space. I love this store and go all the time. It's hit or miss. This store is really tiny and crammed full of fabric. The prices are slightly better than the garment district and they do have a nice, but small variety of fabrics. Their specialty is drapery and upholstery fabrics and they do re-upholstery work in the shop. Most recently I bought fabric to make curtains and I paid much less than I expected. The one detraction is that they short cut me on the drapery lining by 1/3 of a yard so I would recommend that you watch them cut the fabric to be sure that they use a yard stick instead of eyeballing it. read more

I really wanted to like this place and call it my go to fabric store. They have a wide variety of fabric selection. The first time I went, the owner didn't seem to want to help me when I asked him for advice on couch upholstery since it was my first time. I thought maybe he was just busy. Few months later, I went back for another project and asked him for a specific type of fabric and again, he answered me sounding annoyed. So I don't know if I would go back there again. read more

I saw the review about the store having closed, but it isn't closed, it's just been moved moved across the street to the side, off of 3rd ave. I don't know the exact address but wanted to point that out in case anyone needs to go there. One thing I definitely noticed was a dramatic Decrease in their fabric, especially the nice cottons, and Waverly type fabrics. Hoepfully this is just because of the move and they'll be replenishing their fabrics stock. Been going to what used to be Dan Sachs for over 40 years. Angel is just as helpful and nice as he always has been. Giving only 3 stars because of the lack of fabric when I went there a couple of weeks ago. Hoping it doesn't stay that way. read more

I just had my kitchen chairs recovered with matching placemats. So happy!! I love the excellent work Angel did, even carefully centering the pattern. I'm thinking of going back to have matching cafe curtains made. Angel truly lives up to his name-- polite, kind and no pressure. He let me wander his store and select the fabric with no rush. heaps and rolls of fabric and then some- this is the place to go if you don't have a complete project in mind and are willing to build something around what you find...which could be a lot. there is a wide range of fabrics here and all of them are really cheap. the downsides: very limited notions (unless you are making something black, maroon or green you will need to go somewhere else for thread), only one thick quilt batting, and its a very cramped space. i hope they one day will get to expand their space as they were very nice. read more

I found this place a year ago while taking a stroll in Brooklyn. I've been back at least 5 times, and will stop in today as I plan to redo my couch cushions, and pick up other project fabric. The owner is so nice, he lets you browse thru, doesn't hound you as they do in other shops. He offers his help, but lets you be...His prices are great too. I needed slipcovers made for my rattan furniture. Every wicker store I checked with was willing to sell me new cushions and covers, but none would sell me just the covers. Through a yelp review I saw that Angel could sew pillows and I brought my cushions into him. He was able to make 14 cushion covers for me at half the price of what new cushions would have cost. A little treasure of a fabric store in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, for those who want to buy very nice fabrics at very reasonable prices, but who don't want to deal with fancy 'decorator' shops with equally impressive labor prices. I found out about J&A by Googling online. I have two living room chair pillows that are completely different in size, and I wanted to have new slipcovers made for them. I brought the foam pillow forms with me, and Angel helped me select two very nice fabrics from their moderate, but very attractive selections. He measured and cut them for me on the spot. It paid to ask if they knew anyone who does slipcovering, because - to my pleasant surprise - they do it there! That's convenient. So, for under $100 (fabric and labor included), I will soon have two lovely 'new' pillows for the living room. Can't wait to pick them up Saturday! They also do reupholstery in the shop. This is a nice place to know about, and I'd recommend them to anyone who needs to refresh certain pieces, or is a veteran sewer. You'll enjoy the experience. read more
