We did our Living room and Dining room window treatments through Zarin Fabrics and they are not just beautuful, the quality of how they're made is superb. Zarin has a vast and wonderful selection of fabrics and working with Judy was equally as wonderful. She has a great eye, is very professional and we were on the same page from day one. Ritchie, who measures and installs is equally talented, professional and very pleasant. the difference that our window treatments makes is remarkable and really completes and warms up our rooms. I highly recommend Zarin. Brina W.

I was walking down the street, so I decided to pop in, and I was extremely impressed with their selection of upholstery fabric!

Love this place! Haven't found a better spot for upholstery fabric anywhere in the city. Too many other places are completely disorganized, yet Zarin is a breath of fresh air. Rows and rows of fabrics arranged by color family for easy viewing. Each rack is numbered - just jot down the rack number and the row from the top and they fantastic staff will be happy to cut you samples to take home. Best of all, many of the fabrics are around $35 a yard, which is on the very affordable end for good upholstery fabric. I'm going to sew my own bench cushions, but Zarin will do custom work for you, if you're into that too! All around great place, and recommended.

My first visit here. I came in the late afternoon, thinking I only had 15 minutes to shop. Natee asked me what I needed. First, I had a dead phone and could I charge it up? Sure, and he plugged my phone into someone else's charger cord set up on a side table. Terrific! Second, I described the fabric color and look that I wanted and he FOUND THE EXACT THING I NEEDED. For good measure, I looked around a bit more and also shopped for a couple other projects and asked for samples for all of those. These fabrics are beautiful and quality and really well priced! Natee told me to take a photo of the identifying tags on each bolt, so I would be able to order over the phone when I finally decided. I was grateful for his generosity and his assistance. Wish all retail experiences were like this!

My girlfriend and I picked up an old chair off the sidewalk -- a big no-no in NYC, but we really liked the frame, so we took the risk. The cushions were basically rock-hard after 40+ years of use, and the cushions were so stained we wouldn't even place our dirty clothes on the chair until we got it reupholstered. Zarin did a really great job breathing new life into the chair. We took it right before New Years, so the job took a little longer than expected with the holiday, but we couldn't be happier. We'd highly recommend Zarin for any upholstery needs.

I can't believe it's literally three floors and row after row of fabric on every type of role there could be possible, trim, glitter, tool, leather, and vegan leather! Then don't even get me started on all the thread, buttons, and home decor! It's enough to make your head spin!! Everything is incredibly organized by section, textures and style of patterns or solids! I was thoroughly impressed and yet so overwhelmed. I spent 45 minutes, just looking at every fabric and touching everything in sight that I couldn't buy a single yard of anything!! There's a cutting station in a couple of different spot spots as well as stairs and an elevator in case you need to maneuver around, but goodness! I could live here and never get tired!! Now that I think about it, I never looked at the prices but one of the fabrics was $24 a yard. It was a soft jersey fabric, so I'm sure it was more expensive. I should've looked up more prices, but honestly, I was just so overwhelmed, and I wanted to walk through each aisle away! There were a number of employees on each floor, helping other people and restocking other fabrics. I didn't want to bother with asking any questions because I was so enchanted with the fabric store itself! I'm so happy to have graced mood fabrics presence in New York, especially since all the fabrics have gone out of business over here on the West Coast in California! I honestly cannot wait to go back and actually buy some fabric! Lol I will definitely be working on some sketches for a dress or something so I can go in to mood fabrics with a game plan besides being overwhelmed by everything! lol

I've shopped at M&J for decades for sewing supplies: Ribbon, buttons, various closings (hooks &…read moreeyes and the like) trimming, stitch-on images, rhinestones and the like since the 1970s. My grandma--born in 1899--taught me to sew. She was a businesswoman; she and my grandfather owned a bar. He was the face and she handled the books. Stopped in last week and plan to make one more visit before they close. I'm not averse to buying online, but the great thing about shopping at M&J is that you just might find something you weren't expecting but realize you could put to good use. So yes, I think one last trip down there is in order. I shop online regularly and I'm pretty saavy when it comes to finding the things I need, but when it involves fabric and and other sewing materials there's nothing like finding something you had no idea you wanted/needed... including things for which you can't think of an immediate need but you just know might be useful in the future. M&J is a holdover from times when people bought clothing expecting it to last and assumed that they were going to keep it as long as it could be repaired, altered or hemmed up, not toss it within a year or two. And when clothing wore out, we saved the butons or other closings because hey--might need them one day--along with undamged fabric parts because hey, you might need them someday to patch or create something. I will miss M&J so very much because nothing beats seeing--and touching--sewing materials IRL.

M&J is one of those garment district institutions that's been around for nearly 90 years. They've…read morealways been one of the larger stores with a very broad assortment of sewing and design accessories--everything from hundreds of ribbons (may thousands), trims, decals, rhinestones, fabrics, supportive inner garment materials, buttons, hair/costume jewelry components, the list goes on. Agree with some other reviews in that it's one of the pricier stores though you pay for the wide variety--hard to beat their selection. The course of time hasn't been kind to local production. Back in the 1820s up until the early 1980s, when mass garment production stateside was booming in NYC, the garment district employed up to 46% of the city's industrial workforce. There was a need to design and purchase materials nearby, and the majority of Manhattan's midtown west side was dedicated to factories and design studios. Fast fwd to now, that statistic is much different and given the availability of online and global sources, not everyone needs to go into a physical store to purchase their needs. While many products have long moved to overseas sourcing, for anyone who's endeavored DIY arts and crafts, or even made any functional product by hand, it's much different seeing and feeling a material in person than on a screen. That's where in this past century, stores like M&J played a vital role in the fabric of the garment district. They are also a valuable resource to the numerous design students at FIT, Parsons, etc. During past decade many a longtime stalwart trim store have disappeared from the neighborhood and M&J is the latest casualty. If you are interested in sewing or design notions, now's your chance to pick up items at their going-out-of-business sale.

The shop itself is small, as is such with most mom and pop establishments, with Hossein working his magic in the back, buttons a galore in the front, fabrics in the middle, and ribbons scattered throughout. I could spend some time inspecting and exploring each and every texture and color available but didn't want to dilly dally too much before they were to go home. Overall, they were able to take on my sewing request--it was reasonably priced (I think!) and I helped myself to some paracord for a little craft project of mine. Very comfortable space with some people who are experts in their field and provide a very calm and reassuring energy. I was making pants for the first time and they were different colors, so the materials had to work well together as far as weight and appearance. I did purchase some shears that I was able to find for less money elsewhere, and I was able to return them in exchange for store credit. Owners, Clarissa and Nadine, are very knowledgeable and a wealth of tips and suggestions. If you're just starting our, they are perfect to answer any questions you may have. It was the first time I ever made pants, two-toned no less, and they came out amazing. When I visited, I had my kiddo with me and she was gifted with some scrap fabric and an elastic band, and a quick tutorial to construct a simple scrunchie.
