Zarin has been around a while. It's number one for fabric shopping for home textiles in New York. I used to shop there on Sundays after eating at Katz and going through the market at Grand Street. It was ( and is?) a tradition highly recommended for those tourists who want a New York experience after they tire of the museums. In December, I brought two chairs to have their seats (bottoms) reupholstered at a cost of nearly $1,000. I wanted to be sure that the chair that creaked would be reinforced, and was told that Zarin no longer does the work on premises. Rather, it sends the chairs out. Judy, who has been there decades and is pleasant, promised the workman they sent it to - just who, I do not know - would "bolster" it to eliminate the creak. A week later, with the chair now at the upholsterer, I called in to ensure the upholsterer knew the chair had to be bolstered. Judy was on vacation, so I asked the Zarin owner to call the upholsterer and make sure he knew - only to be told he was sure that Judy had taken care of this. I never did get contact info on who actually did the job. When the chairs finally came back and I sat on it at Zarin's, there was no apparent creak, so I paid cash. Back at home, the creak reappeared within 24 hours. I now have two expensively reupholstered chairs, one of which still creaks - because the owner who took Judy's place was too lazy to make a phone call. Not a good way to do business. read more

They make house calls! You have to pay for them, but half of the cost gets deducted from your final total if you go with them. We had two old red velvet sofas that needed reupholstery and some repair (new seat cushions and, for one couch, new legs to make it all sit a bit higher). When Natee (the design expert) and Manny (the carpenter) arrived, I knew we were in good hands. They were easy to talk to, appreciated the beauty of the old camelback sofas, and knew exactly what we wanted. And I think Natee was almost as pleased as I was when it turned out the fabric I chose was one of the least expensive among the samples he brought. The new couches feel luxurious and solid. Excellent workmanship, fast turnaround (about one month, start to finish), and Natee was a pleasure to do business with. read more

Love this place! Haven't found a better spot for upholstery fabric anywhere in the city. Too many other places are completely disorganized, yet Zarin is a breath of fresh air. Rows and rows of fabrics arranged by color family for easy viewing. Each rack is numbered - just jot down the rack number and the row from the top and they fantastic staff will be happy to cut you samples to take home. Best of all, many of the fabrics are around $35 a yard, which is on the very affordable end for good upholstery fabric. I'm going to sew my own bench cushions, but Zarin will do custom work for you, if you're into that too! All around great place, and recommended. read more

My first visit here. I came in the late afternoon, thinking I only had 15 minutes to shop. Natee asked me what I needed. First, I had a dead phone and could I charge it up? Sure, and he plugged my phone into someone else's charger cord set up on a side table. Terrific! Second, I described the fabric color and look that I wanted and he FOUND THE EXACT THING I NEEDED. For good measure, I looked around a bit more and also shopped for a couple other projects and asked for samples for all of those. These fabrics are beautiful and quality and really well priced! Natee told me to take a photo of the identifying tags on each bolt, so I would be able to order over the phone when I finally decided. I was grateful for his generosity and his assistance. My girlfriend and I picked up an old chair off the sidewalk -- a big no-no in NYC, but we really liked the frame, so we took the risk. The cushions were basically rock-hard after 40+ years of use, and the cushions were so stained we wouldn't even place our dirty clothes on the chair until we got it reupholstered. Zarin did a really great job breathing new life into the chair. We took it right before New Years, so the job took a little longer than expected with the holiday, but we couldn't be happier. With a photo of our living room carpet as a guide, we were taken up and down the aisles, given samples and not rushed at all. We love our choice and bought an extra yard for a pillow. After many trips to Zarin, we could not find the right material for the chairs even though they said they get new material all the time. The day we went into the store to do the final order, my decorator arrived and Judy Eichenstein changed the price that was negotiated, which we had in writing. Although they have beautiful fabric I found the prices to be quite high. I had two pillows made. Only two. I picked out fabric to place on the back of the pillows. They got the fabric wrong, and had to be done over. I specifically said don't get the fabrics wrong for each design. They had to cut into the fabric some more so part of my pattern was missing. I had a couch reupholstered after it was ruined by a tenant. Judy at Zarin was top-notch; she has experience and expertise and was patient and very helpful. If you go into the showroom looking for fabric suggestions, ask for Judy. The actual reupholstery service through Zarin had a slight hiccup. The first reupholstery job had to be fixed because the foreperson, Sandra wasn't around to supervise, and there were mistakes. Also, the first time around, the crew who came didn't seem to have much experience and had some difficulty putting my couch back together again. When I complained about the mistakes in the reupholstery, Sandra, the foreperson came out herself to inspect and took the whole thing back to the workshop again and fixed everything perfectly. She also came with her top guy, Jesus, who put together the couch again expertly. I was very pleased with the result, despite the hiccup and would use them again, but would insist on the team of Judy, Sandra, and Jesus. read more

Natee assisted me to choose the appropriate fabrics for the four chairs I was reupholstering, did his best to get me a great price for the work and even ran it by the workroom so there would be no mistakes. He was so patient with me and everything ran smoothly. My chairs turned out beautiful and they were finished so quickly. Update to this review: The facts here from the owner are incorrect. I could go into details with the delays and attach photos from the process and emails but I don't want to embarrass their team any further. Nov 10: initial visit to showroom. Dec 13: Initial proposal after 4 emails and 2 calls with Hunter Douglas products. I was ready to order them but then getting samples to look at was a challenge. Jan 7: the project went to another team member that I was assured would be more prompt with communication. She was helpful in making decisions about material samples but convinced me to try another brand. Ok. Let's just do 1 window then to try it. Jan 17: The deposit was placed and order slip signed on January 17th. On January 17th: Hi Thank you for the shade order I will put the chg through for the deposit of XXXX Please make note of the changes and sign off Please send back to me so that I can start the procedure. 13 minutes later a photo was sent with document signed. Material was set to be ordered that day and follow up minor measurement made later. Feb 6: a follow up verbal discussion when they made the excuse that 3 weeks went by and they forgot to order the material as promised. I insisted be in writing since it was their excuse for the delay of the 'procedure' for details in fabrication which shouldn't impact the material order. When I went to order the rest of the apt a few months later and about to put another deposit down.... I emailed: 'I actually was not aware of that. I was under the impression this was from Phifer - Metro Uni collection - fabrication was with manufacturer of material' How is a no name company have price increases mid year and you refuse to provide a contact to verify this? Then I realized something wasn't right. The response: 'The company is a no name but they all use the same products' There's the proof to anyone who's reading this. They decided they no longer wanted to work with me understandably. I said they had a lot of chutzpah being dishonest to a customer and doing the bait and switch for the order. The personal reasons for the delay in install is understandable but that's also TMI for a customer to know and TMI to share on a review. Again they don't even treat the privacy of their employees with respect. .... As a 3rd generation from LES, we truly wanted to support Zarin even if it was more $. There were just Countless delays and excuses. A 6 week project took 4 months. Quite an Unprofessional team. We paid more for a knock-off then the name brand product. They are not honest people to do business with. Also their showroom is a disgrace. As my grandmother would say total schemata store on orchard street'. We can't believe we got scammed. The work done was basic. And certainly not worth the $ and lack of respect for their customers. read more

We didn't have a good experience with Zarin, unfortunately. Our story sounds similar to another one I read recently on yelp. We had a pair of chairs to be upholstered. At the end of April, we selected the fabric and the color. It took forever to have a sample of the wooden color, it was clear confusion every time we were contacting Zarin to get updates about our chairs' samples, several calls of ours were not taken (so that the conversation had to transform into a chat via phone or email... or personal visits to the store by my husband). After waiting for months and finally confirming the color sample, the price had changed 3 times: the final price asked was almost 4 times the initial one! When we decided not to proceed, because of the whole messy organization, we were told that the job was already started, without our final "go ahead" but not to worry since they were going to offer a discount. We obviously refused to pay and took back our chairs. Additionally, the so-called "started job" was not done in the appropriate way, we're glad we stopped it. We wanted a no-pain and good quality job done. Based on our experience, I would never recommend this place to anyone. Imagine that we were even thinking, once the chairs were done, to get our sofa remade as well, but... no way! We are now back to point 1: find a reliable upholstery company. read more

Have come here twice so far to buy a few yards of velvet. Amazing (insanely amazing) quality fabrics if you're looking for upholstery/heavy duty materials. An AMAZING selection and tons of beautiful fabric to choose from! Each time I go in I'm greeted and am able to find exactly what I'm looking for, the floor assistants are so nice and give you plenty of space to shop around. I had a call to say the shower curtain was ready and Judy said "it is beautiful". I went down to pick it and leftover fabric and trim up. the curtain was wrapped in plastic. I did not open it. I was told there was "no" additional fabric and the two yards of trim that should have been left. I said "impossible". they found the remainder and said they would send it to me and they would charge me for delivery. I said "I am here now give it to me". they sent it to me at no charge as it was their error. the curtain stayed wrapped until the scotch guard I had ordered was delivered. I open out the curtain and across the top is a row of blue ink rings. below it horizontally two lines of black ink. I see spots on the fabric. I see a food stain. with a finger nail i scrape this off but the grease has seeped into the silk and left a stain. I took photos. Harry Zarin apologizes to me. they say they "stand behind their work". Neither the person who made the curtain, packed the curtain, or had called me to say "it is beautiful" actually looked at it . I ring again and am told to bring it beck. I say "your error you pick it up". they did. I gave them any number of suggestions to rectify this. "No". I did stop my credit card payment which was almost $700. The price had gone up $100 from my first inquiry to when i brought the fabric to them. I still have out of pocket expenses of approximately $350. I wrote a review on their web site. there are six that are posted. My negative review was not posted. Small claims court is the final step. find another vendor one who cares one who is truthful. read more
