Within a couple of weeks, the crew and equipment came and did an absolutely exemplary job, even with snow pack on the ground! They had to use their crane to take down more than half of the 25' second trunk that was a threat to our house if it would have been blown down in a storm. They also used their bucket truck to expertly move in and around the branches to zero in on the targeted ones for extraction without doing any damage to the surrounding ones. These guys are very knowledgeable and professional as well as courteous and considerate. They put every bit of extracted wood into their wood chipper and hauled it all away. We chose Jay's Tree Service because of "word of mouth" recommendations from two couples we overheard having a conversation in line at Mama Jean's Barbecue last summer while waiting in line outside. They were discussing a recent storm and how each couple had to have tree work done and they both had used Jay's and were extremely happy with them. I took note of this praise and decided that if we ever needed tree work, it would be with Jay's, and we never even sought any other quotes. TL;DR - paid a lot of money to have them show up weeks late, do a terrible job on the yard/kill plants, complained and had someone show up in my yard unannounced to poke around, then never heard from them again. Unfortunately, being supporters of social justice does not equate to ethical business practices.. I paid over $1500 to have my garden beds mulched, and not only did they show up for the service 6 weeks late (no calls in the meantime - I had to call each week for an update, and they assured me I was "next" on the list each time), they completely destroyed several plants, didn't mulch all the beds, and edged but didn't mulch several beds in the backyard (which were beds I did not want mulched, but now I'm stuck with edged beds and clumps of grass in the beds). I was assured the mulchers would know which plants were weeds and which were intentionally planted, but they cut down several newly planted and FLOWERING native plants. They also butchered my fig tree, which was FRUITING, as well as my butterfly bush which was also flowering. I had to run out and stop them from cutting back several other bushes, which I was not told was part of the service. I called them after assessing the damage, and asked them to remedy the situation, explaining the plants that were damaged/killed and the missed beds they were supposed to mulch. Some guy randomly showed up in my driveway later that day and started walking around the yard, inspecting plants. He didn't ring the doorbell or give me a call to say he was on his way over. After about 30 minutes, he left and I haven't heard from them since. I regret spending all this money for mulching and highly suggest that you do not hire them. My yard continues to recover from the damage they caused, and I have not heard any word from them since complaining several months ago.

Owner Jonathan Sledge is one of only a few local certified professional arborists. Arborists are trained to spot and correct problems, and provide a comprehensive and holistic approach to ensure the well-being of your trees. In our first meeting with Jonathan, we learned more about the species, growth characteristics and proper care of our trees and shrubs than we received from the so-called landscape experts at the nurseries. And the charge? Nothing - but armed with the knowledge, most agree to contract with Above Ground to perform the recommended work. Above Ground doesn't do damaging things like "top" trees or shape them into lollypops. When they make cuts, they are done for a specific purpose and they know how to do it in a manner whereby the tree can heal itself. More importantly, they don't scale trees with spikes which - hello - can open wounds in the bark and expose it to insects, water and disease. Instead, they use a rigging system which is safer for both tree and human. In addition, they don't simply drop the limbs and/or the entire tree, an approach that tends to leave deep gouges in the ground or damages surrounding plants. Branches are tied off and gently lowered to the ground; trees are cut in sections and similarly lowered. The jobsite is left remarkably clean. Tarps are placed under the tree base, logs and branches to catch the sawdust from the chainsaws. Any leaves or small branches that fall from pruning are raked up and removed. Above Ground also understands the value of customer service. To maintain good neighbor-relations, Jonathan proactively approached our neighbors to let them know about the work he and his team were going to do and asked whether he could briefly access their driveway to haul off debris. When a neighbor compliments the work of something as intrusive as tree removal (trucks, loud chainsaws, etc.), you know you've found a great vendor! Jonathan readily admits that tree removal is not his favorite thing. Yet selective removal enables remaining trees to thrive. And weak, dead trees must be addressed to ensure safety. What really piques his interest is plant health care - creating a plan to foster strong growth and homeowner enjoyment. Interestingly, given their expertise and superior care, Above Ground is not any more expensive than lesser tree care outfits. Of course, you can always find someone cheaper. But we tend view trees like a bit like humans. If you do too, wouldn't you want a board certified doctor to diagnose and perform your surgery?
