Recently had trees taken down in my front & back yard. After getting four estimates, J & W offered the best price for the work. They brought a crew of about 8 men and LOTS of big equipment (multiple vehicles) so they were able to knock the job out quickly. Unlike many other tree service contractors, J&W doesn't typically use tree climbers and such. Instead they use bucket trucks to do the work. This is good from the standpoint that the job gets done quickly & affordably. However, it can also cause damage to your yard and surrounding plants. Other estimates I received were hundreds of dollars more, but involved using tree climbers in the backyard to minimize impact/ damage to the yard, fence and plants. The other contractors also allotted more time to the project (1 1/2 days) in part, because of the slower process of dropping trees with tree climbers. In order to get the big equipment into my yard, J&W had to remove my mailbox post and my front picket fence & gate. They also had to dig up some azaleas & hydrangeas, some of which didn't survive the experience. I was pleased they replaced my mailbox post & gate post when they were done, since the old posts couldn't be reused after being dug up. They even poured new concrete for the fence gate post, at no additional charge. (Originally they wanted me to replace the posts, but when I balked, they relented, reluctantly.) The J&W foreman (who never smiled by the way) asked if I was satisfied at the beginning & end of the project, and once in the middle of the project. It wasn't so much a friendly, "what else can I do for you" inquiry, but rather a, "is this okay" question. When I requested they remove a couple additional nearby low branches from a nearby tree, instead of saying, "sure, we'll cut those down too, no problem", I was met with silence. I got the impression the foreman was uncomfortable or not empowered to do much outside of the written estimate... even the littlest of things. (The two branches were only about 10 ft off the ground and part of a shrub... I ended up cutting them off myself with a handsaw.) The owner, Winston, showed up on the job site briefly, but even he was stoic and somewhat condescending, saying "we'll do what we have to, to make you happy" (the operative phrase being, "what we have to"). The day after J&W left, I found fast food garbage in the rear of the backyard (cups, bags, wrappers), and when I planted trees and shrubs a couple weeks later, I learned they only did a so-so job of grinding out the tree stumps... making replanting more challenging. I've had trees taken down in the recent past, and the contractor I last used (All Stumps Plus) was more friendly and helpful during the project... even offering to do additional things (like grinding up old nearby stumps) for little or NO additional cost. That wasn't the case with J&W. They left nearby stumps untouched -- even one that was CONNECTED TO the stump they were grinding. They never asked if I would like other stumps ground. (I would have considered a reasonable additional charge to have it done.) In conclusion, if you need trees taken down quickly and affordably, and you're NOT TOO CONCERNED about possible damage to your yard, plants or bushes, ... AND you don't anticipate making any special requests, then J&W may be a good fit for you. As for me, I don't anticipate using them again. I'd rather spend a little more to get friendlier, helpful service... with less destruction to my yard. Besides, some contractors are willing to match a competitor's price -- or come close to it. read more

I would highly recommend that you DO NOT choose this company, not even for an estimate. I received estimates from multiple tree removal companies and Winston of J & W tried to charge us THREE TIMES the price another company offered us. Winston was pushy about removing our tree and when I told him I was choosing another company, he said "Thanks for wasting my time." He's a very rude representative for this company and I am very happy I did my research and shopped around. They will try to overcharge you and give you horrible customer service. read more

J&W Tree Service was awesome! I would have had the work done a lot sooner if it knew it would have been as easy and such a good deal! We are new residents to the house, so J&W called MissUtility ahead of time to make sure they did not hit a utility line (now we also know where items are underneath the yard). They answered all my questions and called me back in a timely manner. I had the quote and service done all within a week. I definitely recommend them, as they are honest and fair. read more

I hired J and W Tree Service to cut down numerous trees on my property. On August 23, 2018 one of the trees they were cutting fell on and broke my septic tank. Winston, who is the owner of J and W Tree Service, refuses to submit a claim to his insurance company or take responsibility for the damage, and is instead blaming me. He says I incorrectly told him where the septic tank was located and says he has a witness. He and his "witness" are not correct, because this is not true. I both told and showed Winston the correct location. I have no reason to tell him it is located somewhere other than where I have correctly known it to be since we built our home and had the septic system installed over 25 years ago! In fact, my memory of its location is reinforced each time it's been pumped out, which has been every four years since it was installed. Each time I've had it pumped out; which was most recently two years ago, I showed the contractor where it is and watched them pump it out. Winston offered to pay half of the deductible if I would place a claim with my insurance carrier. I thanked him for the offer but declined it because even though they knew the location of the septic tank, they cut down the tree that fell and broke the tank and this is precisely what their insurance coverage is for. I didn't do anything wrong and placing a claim with my insurance carrier will cause an increase in the premiums I pay. I should not be expected to file a claim nor should I have any out of pocket expense as a result of these damages. I did everything I could do, I told and showed them where the septic tank was before they started cutting the trees, and when one of the workers fell into the hole created by the broken septic tank, I gave him a pair of shorts, socks, and shoes to change into after he rinsed off the sewage. I asked if he was okay and he said yes and appeared to be okay as he continued to work the remainder of the afternoon. I've been issued a citation by the health department that requires I have the septic tank replaced by the end of this month, September 2018. I have given J and W Tree Service the time and every opportunity to rectify the situation to no avail. They have told me they will not pay anything for the new septic tank, and have thus far refused to file a claim with their insurance and have resorted to calling me a liar and a cheat. I had 2 trees scheduled to take down for 3 days now. They asked me to have our vehicles, (we have 5) out of our driveway for the tree removal. I got a call late sunday night rescheduling monday to tuesday, no problem, things happen. Then tuesday no one had showed up by 1130 so I called Winston and was told "an employees car broke down and no one else showed up to work this morning, can we do it tomorrow?" upset that I had to call you and you didn't call me, along with this being the 2nd day our vehicles had to be moved to my husband's job, ok come tomorrow. Well, today came and no one is here, I did receive a call, at 10am saying this time "OUR work truck is in the shop, can we do it tomorrow"... Well, I think not! Yesterday it was the employee, today the work truck, 3 days in a row of inconvenience to us having to move vehicles around and not have them here when we need them.... NEVER WILL CALL AGAIN! If this is how they do business, how bad will it be when they finally do show, you don't treat customers like this!!!! read more
