I stopped in the first gallery he had (which was very traditional) and chatted with him for a while-- nice guy. But I figured that he had to be nuts to leave everything and come to a town like Millville to sell art. But I was wrong. Dennis Tawes has become known as Millville's pioneer artist, and he is, because he really did journey into the unknown when he came here. He's been here the longest and has the coolest art gallery/studio in Millville. Unless you make an appointment you can only see it on 3rd Fridays. I highly recommend you don't miss the gallery on Third Friday's, it's definitiely the wildest. There's crock pot with some grub, appetizers, wine, lots of comfy couches and hires INCREDIBLE musicians to provide ambiance. It's the kind of place you could just sit on a filthy couch in a wacky gallery and relax for hours and people watch. Great vibe. The gallery is the wildest hodgepodge of art and garbage I've ever seen. Dennis is a real artist through and through and is not constrained by conventional aesthetics. Follow the sounds of live blues, and when you find a store with a ratty moosehead in the window and a bunch of dirty hippies hanging around outside, you've reached your objective. (On 3rd Fridays there's no cover charge although he appreciates donations of course to cover the cost of the food & wine.)

Generally their showings are of some of the better area artists. On 3rd Friday the place is humming with artists and intellectuals chatting and snacking on fruit and cheese and wine. Lots of fun! Even as a teenager, just walking in and smelling all the incredible candles and seeing all the warm and beautiful artwork was heaven, to me. I imagined living there and being surrounded by all the handcrafted glory! I moved cross country long ago, but would always make it my first stop whenever I came back to town. One of my favorite paintings is from the Holly Hut and it still hangs in my dining room. Love, love, loved this place.

The location is run by the artists, so that if you want to sell things you volunteer your time to help keep the shop open, through volunteering for the organization or working in the shop half a day. This really brings in a unique set of different prints and 3D art. We especially liked the woodworked surf boards. Everything we saw really was high quality. Each month has a different theme, while July and August are focused on Jersey Shore beaches. We had a great time walking around and finding places at different beaches that we've seen. Everyrhing is pretty affordable, and because so many different artists are represented, there are things for everyone. I'd definitely recommend stopping in, and chatting with whoever is working the desk. They're crazy passionate about the artists and what they do.

Delafaire, AKA the Delaware Renaissance Faire, is held over three weekends in October - November…read moreeach year. This is one of four "pop up" faires run by the same group. I e now been to three: Philly Faire, Bucks County Faire and Delafaire. The fourth is Midsommar Faire in Connecticut (July). This was my first visit to Delafaire, and it's already on my calendar for next year. The Faire is in Townsend DE, not terribly far from Smyrna. It's in a rural location, so cell service is spotty at best. The Faire is held on the grounds of Fire Base Lloyd, a veteran's assistance organization. You'll see the big helicopter mounted out front. The fees they make renting their field (30 or so acres) go to support their work with homeless veterans. Pretty cool. I arrived just before / at opening. Checking in was easy, the line moved quickly. They had their first show, a harp player who sang traditional folk songs from the renaissance period. I joined up with friends, and we walked the grounds, visiting the vendor tents, seeing a few shows (Magic! Storytelling! Comedy!). The "pub" was cool, all proceeds from that went up the Delaware Museum of Nature and Science. Also cool. They had a Filipino restaurant there in a good tent. I got the lumpia which were delicious. I also got a strawberry shortcake bowl with vanilla ice cream and nilla wafers that was quite good. Parking was easy. There had been rain so mud was a thing - you are parking in a field. Tickets were quite reasonable, especially for all the acts and characters. Well run, lots to do, gives back to the community. What else could you ask for?

When you arrive, you're greeted by friendly staff who provide you with a tag and free range of the farm's extensive tree selection. It's fun to wander through the fragrant rows of Concolor and Douglass Firs with your family - hot chocolate and cookies are provided (#holla #holidays #hashtag) for the optimal wandering experience. You can cut down your tree or, as we opted to do this year, bring home a live tree. At the end of your visit, you'll stop in the office. Gorgeous wreaths and garlands adorn its walls, as does a weirdly festive deer skull. It's fun, kitschy, and more #christmas than a Peppermint Mocha Latte. Oh - the trees are pretty great too.
