I am a growing carpentry business that has been in business for two years part time and full time for three months. My paper management of my expenses and bills is creating a disaster in my filing cabinet so I decided to open a Xero account. I hired Easier Accounting for a consultation fee to help me get things rolling. Sean allowed me to record our session while screen sharing and guiding me through on a phone call. Things went great and I am looking forward to the software making my life easier. The only reason I did not give a full five stars is because of some missing information. I was told by Easier Accounting that the Xero fee is $8/month. This is true, but it is $8 for a very basic account and my needs are greater than that. I am now paying $30/month for the "growing" account that my business needs. Quickbooks is also $30/month but I did not consider Quickbooks due to my original $8/month price I thought I would be paying for Xero. I wish I had all of the information I needed to make an informed decision based on my needs. These guys are sales experts so I can't blame them, they sold me a product that they stand behind and offer support on. I am still very happy, I just wish they had been more forthcoming about Xero's price points.

Purchase a $5,000 tax preparer bond from an insurance/surety agent. Obtain a Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN) from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Register and submit the $33 registration fee online. Yes, absolutely we wanted to check our tax returns. I'm skeptical that anyone can do a complete stranger's taxes accurately in a one hour consult, and I need to be comfortable with the work before I trust someone with something as important as this. As it turns out, Mr Edwards did not fill out Form 8949 for Schedule D capital gains and loss transactions resulting in about ~$900 in additional tax owed. Maybe an honest mistake, but I'm glad we checked. Rest assured that I did not submit my taxes with your name on them. I don't know why you would even suggest that. Your integrity is called into question when you charge more than the initial estimate. Sure we asked a few questions, but we were looking to understand to make sure our taxes were done right and to assure ourselves we were in good hands. I still don't understand why this is a problem. I would have gladly paid your estimated fee for the hour of your time if you had just answered questions. Clearly there was a misunderstanding regarding the "free consultation" (which is still advertised on your website by the way). I wouldn't have felt the need to go on yelp to review your business if you hadn't jacked up the price by $50 on the spot. I'm sure your business will do fine without me, but I hope you spend more time and care on other client's taxes than you did on mine. There are other companies out there that will spend more than an hour with you to make sure you get every penny out of your returns.

In our case, a required Utah state tax payment was not made by the deadline, resulting in penalties and a notice of lien from the Utah State Tax Commission. We were not proactively informed of the missed payment and only discovered the issue after independently following up. Although the firm eventually reimbursed the penalties, this occurred only after repeated follow-up and escalation on our part. Throughout the engagement, communication was inconsistent and unclear, and we had to repeatedly request clarification on basic items that should have been proactively managed. We also identified errors in our Wisconsin return, including incorrect location information. While the financial penalty was ultimately addressed, the overall experience reflected significant gaps in process, accuracy, and communication. We will not be using this firm again.
