Ladies, if you're considering breast surgery, run--do not walk--as far away as you can from this man. The story I'm about to share is not pretty, nor is it easy for me to talk about, for reasons which will become obvious very shortly. However, if writing this review saves even one woman from going through what I went through, I will consider it entirely worth it. When I was a little girl, flat as a pancake and jealous of my older sister's developing figure, I used to wish with all my heart for full, womanly breasts. This is one of those "be-careful-what-you-wish-for" scenarios, because the good Lord in his infinite wisdom decided to bless me with way more than my fair share. By the time I was twelve, I was wearing a C-cup. When I finally stopped developing, I topped out at a 36DDD. I got all of the wrong kind of attention from boys in high school, and on top of the self-esteem issues I also had to contend with chronic lower back pain and bowing clavicles from the extra weight on my chest. By the time I was twenty, I had decided that enough was enough, and I asked my OBGYN for a referral to a surgeon who could perform a reduction. In the consultation, Cusick was insulting about my weight and referred to my breast shape as a "rock in a sock." First off, they weren't that bad. I wasn't even old enough to drink, so they hadn't had time to become awful in terms of gravitational pull. Secondly, why the hell would you say that to someone who has admittedly had self-esteem issues relating to her breasts? Do they not teach bedside manner to plastic surgeons? Despite having reservations about his attitude, I scheduled the procedure and eagerly awaited the operation, looking forward to having the huge weight literally lifted off my shoulders. When the time came, my mom joined my then-boyfriend and me at the Surgicenter of Johnson County. When my mom had concerns about the surgery and anesthesia, Dr. Cusick was condescending, avoiding answering her questions by telling her that we were "at a top-notch facility." Complications still arise during surgeries, even at the best places, but he was apparently unwilling to consider this and talk through the procedure with my mother, who was already worried. After surgery, I was sent home to recover. Pain was to be expected, but what I went through was definitely unacceptable. The skin on my breasts was stapled, rather than sutured. Most plastic surgeons who do breast operations steer clear of staples, and I now know why. After having worked in veterinary surgery for several years, I am now aware that the only advantage staples have over suture is efficiency in the O.R. It takes far less time and effort to bang a few staples into the skin than it does to painstakingly suture things closed. With breasts, however, staples tend to hold less securely and create more scarring. My situation was complicated by the fact that the skin on my right breast had been pulled too tight in the first place, and the incision line split in three different places. I was left with huge wounds along the side of my areola, down the center of my breast, and underneath where the vertical incision met the horizontal one. When we went in to see Cusick about it, he refused to take responsibility for the incident and tried to avoid doing a corrective procedure. He informed me that he wanted to wait several weeks to see if it would heal by second intention, essentially allowing the skin to granulate back together. This would, of course, have left horrific and irreversible scarring, so I protested as much as possible, but he refused to do the surgery until we allowed it to have a chance to heal again. After waiting three weeks with painful, gaping wounds all over my breast, he finally agreed to do another surgery. He debrided the dead tissue around each wound and closed them, this time using suture. Things healed fine after that, but I was left with large areas of scarring and a severely uneven areola on that side. In addition to the problem I had with the right breast, I also had a severe reaction to the metal in the staples. When I went in to have them removed, the areas where the prongs had entered my skin were red and inflamed, and having them taken out was extremely painful. When it was obvious that I was in a good deal of discomfort, instead of doing something helpful or at least being apologetic, Dr. Cusick's nurse told me that I was being childish and that what she was doing did not hurt. Nothing pisses me off faster than someone trying to tell me how I do or do not feel. I am now left with breasts I absolutely hate. I have a small raised scar from each prong of every staple, in addition to the heavy incision scars. If I could give him zero stars, I would. Breasts are a huge part of a woman's sexuality and self-image, and both are ruined for me now, all thanks to one man's incompetence and callousness. read more

This review might not be for the feint of heart. Just a warning...gory subject ahead. Moles. Yes, moles. When you spend your youth frying out in the sun slathered in baby oil, you'll reach a certain age where you need to start having all the damage you did to your skin removed. Sunscreen, kids! Wear it! I had a strange, morphing mole on my ribcage that my regular doctor didn't want to tackle. So he referred me to a plastic surgeon (Dr. Cusick) with the advice that he would do a much neater job in removing it from such a delicate location. Dr. Cusick sent me to the Shawnee Mission Surgical Center to have this mole removed. This is where he does all of his procedures. To quote him, "I can just squeeze you in between a couple of breast augmentations." Well, how nice of him! The procedure lasted about 15 minutes. Once he learned that I was a Realtor, most of that 15 minutes was spent with him telling me that I was the reason the entire American economy had collapsed. Apparently, Dr. Cusick hates Realtors. The incision was about 1.5 inches long with a few stitches. By the time I had my follow-up visits to have the stitches removed and the scar looked at because it was pretty hideous, my bills for this grand mole removal added up to $10,000. $10,000! For that much money, I'm thinking he should have thrown in a couple of new boobs. 15 minutes + 1.5 inch incision + berating = $10,000 read more

I had noticed a spot on my right cheek that was abnormal. Long story short, it was a benign tumor I needed to have removed. My dermatologist recommended Dr. Cusick. My experience was nothing but great. The surgery went as planned. He and his staff showed me how to treat my incision and scar after surgery. 8 months post surgery and my scar is barely noticeable. I am very pleased with the results and happy the incision healed so well with minimal scarring. read more

My 9yr old son severely injured his finger. The ER doctor stabilized him and said surgery was needed and referred us to Children's Mercy. I contacted CMH the next day and they wouldn't see us for a consultation and scheduled him for the end of the week. I contacted our friends and family as well as his pediatrician for recommendations. Dr. Cusick came with glowing recommendations. I called his office and they got us in the very same afternoon for a consult and immediately scheduled him for surgery. While the surgery center we went to wasn't "kid friendly" like children's mercy would have been, Dr. Cusick did an amazing job with his finger reconstruction. In fact, he did such a great job that when we went back for his last post op follow up the nurse couldn't tell which finger had been operated on and had to look through his chart to figure it out! He healed great and is back to normal and the scar is minimal. Just as another parent of an active boy ,who had hand surgery, recommended Dr. Cusick to me, I too, would recommend Dr. Cusick as well. read more

My experience with Dr. Cusick was much different then those listed below. I felt like he took the time to explain how the procedure went, what he was going to be doing, and which size implant would be best for my figure. He came highly recommended from a work colleague, and I am blown away with my results. I am only three weeks out from surgery and my scars are completely healed. I wouldn't even consider it a scar, it looks like a little fold in my skin, hidden right under my breast! In regards to the surgery center I have no complaints either....I was prepped for surgery and talked to two anesthesiologist and my doctor in under 40 min. The next thing I knew I was done! I have always wanted rhinoplasty, pretty much all my life. I chose Dr. John Cusick because of his qualifications. His bed side manner was Great. His team n him always made me feel comfortable. He exceeded my expectations. It's been 3 weeks since the surgery, you'd never know I had one. I still have a bit of healing to do, but that is typical with this type of surgery. Everything about Dr. Cusick, in my opinion, has been nothing but the very best. I was diagnosed with Squamas Cell skin cancer on my left ear. The tumor had grown out looking like a small root from a plant. Dr. Cusick removed .5" X 1.5" of the outer ear completely removing the tumor before it could erupt into my bloodstream and spreading through out my body. His reconstruction of the outer ear is nothing short of superb. You have to VERY closely inspect my ear to even see that anything was done. It matches my right ear perfectly. A few months later, my wife had a benign Basil cell skin cancer removed from her left ear. Again with similar results. You can't even tell there had been surgery. Three months later inside her right ear, another surgery. This time it wasn't cancer but the cartlidge had erupted through her skin, causing a large growth, pain and inflamation. The surgery was more intense, but now 2 months later, you can only see a small red area if you look closely. My mother has used Dr. Cusick for well over 10 years having 15-20 skin cancer removals done, from her hands, arms, face, neck,etc. All with great results. She had developed cancer in her upper and lower lips, Dr. Cusick removed the cancer and rebuilt her lips to look like when she was a young woman. All in all, our family has had nothing but excellent results and we are happy to totally endorse Dr. Cusick and feel lucky to have such a good Dr. and have no reservations in his capabilities. read more

For my surgery Dr. Cusick gave the best care possible pre and post surgery. Dr. Cusick prescribed what I call a miracle cream lotion (Dr. Cusick's vitiman E) to help heal the scar on my face. I use it on everything including some acne scars and on a broken bone scar I have from years ago. I've experienced 10 times improvement in areas where I have scars and have used the cream. I would NOT recommend this doctor for anything. His staff is insulting and he way over charges for a first visit consultation $250! I was in his waiting for at least 30min for him to check a sun spot which took less that 10min. He wanted me to go to out pacient surgery to remove it - I went elsewhere. I'm glad to see that other reviews reflect my experience and the experience of my sister. I went here for a simple surgical procedure and was left with a scar that was larger than necessary. My sister had an emergency and ended up at his office. The office staff are horrible - they accused her of trying to get out of work when she had a very serious, urgent medical issue and were not helpful with billing issues involved in a major medical procedure. Thankfully she switched to another doctor who was much more helpful especially in the area of scar tissue revision, which was a major concern. For the reviewer that said, run, do not walk, as far away as you can, I wholeheartedly agree, for any procedure, minimal or not. read more

Lipomas (fatty tumors) are something I have inherited from my mother's side of the family. Most are small, but I had a rather large, child fist-sized one on my back. It created pressure against some nerves and was a nuisance. I first visited a dermatologist to have it removed, but they said it was too large for them to do (and it involved nerves) and recommended Dr. Cusick. He evaluated my lipoma and we scheduled surgery fairly early. It was removed at Shawnee Mission Surgery Center in an easy, quick procedure. I have nothing but wonderful things to say about each person I encountered throughout my care: Dr. Cusick, his office staff, his surgery staff and the SM Hospital staff. Dr. Cusick checked after a couple of weeks and did another follow-up at two months. The scar is very minimal, the nerve pain is gone and I was really happy with the experience. I definitely would visit again should I have the need. read more

Dr. Cusick performed breast reduction surgery on me and came highly recommended by two of my friends. I could not be any happier with the results. I only wish I would have had it done years earlier! I would like to say that Cusick was very helpful and nice during the 10 months that I delt with him. I broke my hand at work and snapped my middle knuckle off my hand. Cusick was able to do two surgeries to repair it and it now works almost as good as new. It is not perfect but after what happened I was just thankful for any use out of it. After the therapy was completed, he worked on the pain and the scare that was left. Like I said it will never look the same as it used to and I will probably always have some discomfort but I can actually use it which I thought I would never be able to do. Not to knock any of the remarks left but he is a good doctor, he can't fix everything but seems to do a good job trying. read more

Dr. Cusick and his staff are awesome and have been a real blessing. Dr. Cusick is very talented, professional, informative and diligent with his treatment. I needed facial nerve and scar revision surgery as a result of a freak bicycle accident (picture a bad face plant into concrete pavement ... ouch). I had a laceration and facial nerve damage, not something anyone wants to happen! Surgery and in office treatment has exceeded my expectations and the results have been remarkable, to say again a real blessing!! read more

The trouble I had was with Dr. Cusick's billing department. Their website advertised Complimentary Breast Augmentation Consultations. When I arrived, they stated I needed to pay my $60 copay in order to bill insurance. When I showed them the complimentary breast augmentation consultation from their website, they stated I still needed to pay in order to see the doctor. I told them I didn't know if I wanted to bill insurance, I needed the consult first. They still made me pay the $60 for my complimentary breast augmentation consultation.... not so much complimentary at all! The doctor stated that insurance would not pay for my augmentation, therefore there was no need to bill insurance. I called their billing department, they stated it was submitted as a breast reduction consultation instead of a breast augmentation consultation. Therefore, no refund would be issued. All I wanted was the complimentary breast augmentation consultation. The billing office is full of crooks! read more
