Every eye doctor I have been to who dilated my eyes for an exam gave me very dark glasses with blinders on each side to wear after leaving. This doctor just let me leave the office with an old pair of my own sunglasses; very careless and cavalier. The next day--headache; extreme sensitivity to light. Seems like he could care less. From the onset, the office staff was not on top of it and not welcoming. When I arrived, they spoke to me with barely any eye contact. This was my first visit with Kyle Smith. He greeted me curtly and started the exam with barely an introduction, explanation or any health history. He seemed to be in a hurry. The culminating incompetence was he asked if I wanted my eyes dilated and explained that I would have blurry vision for 4 hours. I very clearly declined saying I had to drive south to Mendocino and drive children around. He said no problem he would numb them with drops to examine them. I felt weird immediately after the drops and asked if I could be having a reaction. He invalidated my symptoms and was super cavalier and dismissive. He sent me on my way immediately and said I should feel fine in 10 minutes. I sat in my car for 20 minutes and still could not read the time or text on my cell phone. I returned to the office to inquire what was going on. After seeing my pupils, he replied, "Son of a gun, I grabbed the wrong dropper bottle." When I expressed shock and upset he barely said I'm sorry and that was it. Incompetent, uncaring, and unprofessional. Time to retire? read more

Dr was nice, but after three changes I was told no more, and my old glasses are still better. Office staff seriously needs charm school. They act like you are interrupting something important they are doing. A grim vibe there. read more

I had a very bad experience with this doctor in January of 2022. He was rude and dishonest. I have Medi-Cal, but I didn't realize it covered vision care so I was fully planning to pay out of pocket for this visit. Dr. Smith first made a very inappropriate joke about once being a "bad doctor" and accidentally burning a patient's cornea with alcohol. Then I expressed some concern about glaucoma, since it's on both sides of my family. After looking into my eyes with a bright light (without even dilating them) he told me my nerves looked "interesting" and that he would need to do more tests to know for sure. He asked what insurance I had. When I said Medi-Cal, he was immediately done with me. All he cared about was finding out who had scheduled my appointment, probably so he could yell at them for taking someone with Medi-Cal. Then he left the room and started talking to someone else in the waiting area. I had to chase him down and ask him about the other tests he'd mentioned. "Put her on the list!" he yelled rudely to the receptionist. "We'll call her in a couple months!" I understand why doctors would not want to take Medi-Cal since they don't make as much money per patient. But he could have been upfront with me about this rather than just being rude and lying to me (they never called me in a few months). He could have recommended another doctor who takes Medi-Cal. Also, I saw another doctor later, an ophthalmologist, who said my eyes look fine, no signs of glaucoma. So basically what Dr. Smith did was see dollar signs when I mentioned my concern about glaucoma and told me I needed more tests when I actually did not. You can't even tell much without dilating someone's eyes. When he found out I had Medi-Cal, he knew he wouldn't make lots of money so he no longer cared. I was really scared I had glaucoma after this visit! Also- I was going to pay in full for the visit, but due to his weirdness and rude behavior, they ended up billing Medi-Cal so they lost money! Hopefully next time they'll be honest with their patients. I would not recommend this doctor to anyone. read more

Dr. Smith is very personable and professional. I've been to his office 3 times and have always left with satisfaction. He diagnosed my diabetic retinopathy and set me up with an excellent retina specialist. The glasses available in his office are great and his staff knowledgeable and patient! It's tough choosing a pair of new glasses!! I never felt rushed to make a decision. Great atmosphere in an Arts and Crafts style bungalow. Clean and safe. read more

Kind of get the feeling he doesn't like his clients very much. Office does not follow up on requests either. I wasted nearly $200 on a bad Rx from them. I really tried to give them my business bc there are so few options around here but after this year I give up on this place. :( read more

I've been going to Dr. Smith for several years now. I enjoy his light-hearted sense of humor. He's warm, considerate, and goes out of his way to accommodate the fact I have physical limitations. He's especially thorough with showing me and explaining the computer screen pictures his machines have taken. The last few years my prescription has changed so little, even though I'm in my 70's, that he says it's up to me if I want new lenses. His office has no problem using my old frames either, saving me several hundreds of dollars. He's also keeping a close eye ( a pun he would use!) on cataract progression and I have every confidence he will tell me exactly when I need that surgery. My only criticism is because he takes his time, later appointments probably get behind, so go early. read more

We were visiting from out of town and my daughters glasses broke. The arm lost the screw. After trying for a day to get it back in ourselves, we stopped by hoping they could help us. The receptionist immediately took the glasses and fixed them for $3. The service was so prompt and the dr even came out and said hello and joked with my daughter. So glad she didn't have to spend our vacation stuck in her sunglasses!!! read more

i wouldn't even give one star, this eye doctor would get a minus star. Rude, i would not recommend him to ANYONE! After i endured my appt., where i was weighed, since when do you need your weight?! i asked different friends if they 'd gone to this person, and the gist i was told was the reason he does all these different things, is he can charge more to your insurance. My visit was over $450! Run the other way!! read more
