I had cervical spine surgery 2 1/2 months ago. Dr Sales is an excellent surgeon BUT follow up care is sorely lacking. I had to plead with the patient coordinator to get my pain meds and had to call every-three-days to get refills. I had severe nerve pain from a damaged nerve in C5 and the PA would only prescribe 100mg gabapentin 3x/day. After pleading with him he increased the dose to 300mg 3x/day. It still wasn't enough to curb the nerve pain. I feel if the PA had upped the gabapentin to a higher dose to relieve the nerve pain I would have been able to stop taking the opioids much sooner. Zero guidance was provided. I have been weening myself off the hydrocodone - no help, no guidance from the surgeons office about contacting my PCP for support. I've been on my own the past month figuring things out on my own with Googles help. Now I've hit a wall. The withdrawal symptoms are intense - irritability, anxiety, frequent crying, joint pain, insomnia, flu like symptoms and on and on. I spoke with the pharmacist in my PCP's office today and now have a game plan. The upshot - Sales is an excellent surgeon but his team is not! read more

From starting with them in 2020 for my lower back to my lower back doing good since having stimulator placed in August 2023 by Dr. Sales to now working with him and his staff to get my neck better. So of course since my lower back has been doing good since August of 2023, I thought I wouldn't have to come back for a long time, but my neck thought it be a great idea to need to come back this year instead. Dr Sales and his PAs and office staff are always great. Let's be honest though a break from y'all for a while longer after my neck gets made better be nice. I highly recommend Dr Sales and his team. Biggest regret in my life! I had surgery on December 9th 2019. I walked into the hospital at St Vincent for a day surgery for a fusion of my lower back and spacers. I woke up and the first thing I see is, my feet flailing back and forth and could not control them. Also could not feel or move anything from my waist down. Had to have catheters long term and ended up spending a total of 11 days in the hospital and K4 floor at providence to learn to walk again. To this day, all I got from Sales is garbage responses and no help. I was told by him to give it 3 months then it went from that to 6, 12,18, 24 months. I am worst off now then before. I was diagnosed with a syndrome I never had before the surgery, Sales diagnosed me after the surgery that is a injury to the spinal cord. Yep Dr.Sales never treated me for it. Still to this day nothing. It's an injury that must be treated with in days . After about a year he stopped responding to calls and just faded away! Ever sense I have been trying to find someone to help me. But no one in the this state will touch it because of the system. I will have to move out of Oregon to get help. Dr Sales is an unethical surgeon and even worst a man. He had a chance to fix what ever went wrong and he chose not too. He should have pulled me back in the second I woke up in that condition. Instead I got let's wait and excuses. This state protects Doctors like him and it sad. Dr. Sales you have destroyed my life and you don't have enough man in you to admit something went wrong and try to fix it or at least admit it. You failed this patient and I hope you don't do this to anyone else. I had high hopes for this surgery but I never imagined that you would destroy me and then just walk away with no cares. Making excuse and distancing yourself from a patient you injured! This is all on you. Would never recommend Sales to anyone or the hospital! This will be a life time of struggles. Dr. Sales has treated my husband for the past five years for a degenerative spine condition. He has always been thoughtful about doing the most minimally invasive procedure, while doing an excellent job with the more significant procedures. I have been a patient of Dr. Sales since 2012. My case is really different, but he operated on me. He is amazing. He is caring, understanding, and listens to your concerns, your opinions, and does not hesitate to offer you a second opinion. His staff is just as brilliant as he is. Sean and Shalynn are wonderful. They also listen to your concerns and are caring and understanding. As I said, I have been a patient there for 5 years. Before my last operation, Dr. Sales and I both had concerns about whether or not, I really needed another surgery. However, after a second opinion by another trusted surgeon, and lost reflexes in the leg, it was time. Dr. Sales, answered every question I had, and I had a lot ( I am a paralegal, so it's my nature to question), and he was patient and really took his time with me. He knew how much I wanted to avoid another operation. With that being said, I came out with less pain in my spine, and almost no pain in my leg. This was an incredible result. If you have radicular pain down the leg(s) you know how debilitating it can be. I was a mess by the time I was on his table. I cannot recommend Dr. Sales enough. Surgeons do not come any better. Its, just not him either, its his entire staff. When I wanted to go back to work, his staff worked with me to get the paperwork done timely (office staff), as well as his PA. I am telling you, there is nothing better, and no better feeling when you know a doctor's office really care about you and your well being. In my last and final visit, I let them know "thank you", and although, I was so very thankful to them, I hope to never see them again! Sean and I had a great laugh over that. But you know what? His response floored me. Sean said "Don't you forget, you will always be a patient here for the rest of your life, and we will always be glad to see you and take care of you. So if I see you again, it will be great." How many doctor's say that to their patients? Dr. Sales, is the most incredible physician I have ever met, and his staff would get 100 stars if I could give them. They truly are remarkable people. They don't come any better. Please do not be put off because you are seeing a PA as well as Dr Sales.The PAs are exceptional. The office makes sure that I was seen by all BEFORE surgery. You need to be careful. Sean (PA) and Dr Sales look alike. The other PA (Shalynn) is also wonderful. If you need spine surgery this is definitely the place to at least go to get a consultation. I went to 2 other spine surgeons in the Portland OR area who both wanted to do much more extensive surgery. As a person in her 70's Dr Sales and both PA were concerned that a more extensive surgery would be too difficult of a recovery so they opted for an easier recovery for me. They certainly could have made much more money had they fused my entire back. So grateful to them. No one is sitting at a computer writing while you are in the exam room. They are totally focused on the patient. And..the OR staff at St Vincent's Hospital love them. When their peers tell me that they would only go to this practice that is telling you something. I am in healthcare. A patient advocate and a patient care snob. Even if you don't need surgery, it's worth just looking at the beautiful artwork in their waiting room. Beautiful/detailed website.
