I also used to put their music on when I was cooking or cleaning or something - background music. They played the same songs over and over and over again, along with commercials from their employees hocking products as the best thing on the planet. Got very irritating very fast. Between Bob, poor track lists, and the infomercials, they've been off my station list for a few months. So much better out there, especially internet streaming!

On the air since 1977, they play an incredibly wide range of music, with a special focus on local artists. Every day from 5-9 pm they give away tickets for shows at local venues, which is a great opportunity to explore Chapel Hill's music scene. As far as programming goes, I love the Thursday Night Feature, where the DJ picks a theme and then chooses the songs that fit that theme (e.g., 3 hours of songs about rainbows, or whatever). The only downside to WXYC is that with that much focus on diverse programming and music, there are certain times of day that they just don't play any songs I like. Nine times out of ten I like what I hear, but then again I've also flipped over when they were playing what sounded like 15 straight minutes of windchimes.
