We'd enjoyed a series of great Nordic-style meals on our trip to Copenhagen and then Oslo. But, on…read moreour last night with our granddaughter in Oslo, we craved a change from all those delicious steamed-in-cream muscles, tasty baked salmon and classic smoresbords. Izakaya fit the bill. In fact, it may have ended up being the best meal of our week-long trip. Yes, as you've read and can see from other Yelpers' photos, it's teeny tiny inside. But, when you get lucky and get seated, it's nice and cozy. You certainly aren't merely one 2-top in a long boring row of tables that's for sure. There's no sign outside but because it has a distinctive look on the exterior (see photos of the heavy grillwork on the windows) you really can't miss it. A Yelper's description of 'Japanese tapas' is right on the mark, tho this is a bit of mixed metaphor. Dishes (especially the last two below) are relatively small. Maybe four dishes will do for two people but you'll likely end up as we three did: wanting a bit more. We started with the Gyoza. Definitely delicious and served piping hot. Next was Bang Bang Ji - shredded chicken, julienned cucumber, and a spicy sauce. Good and a nice prelude to the Mazemen. Our hands-down favorite of the night was the Mazemen, broth-less ramen with a delicious sauce, oil, and toppings. Especially delicious with the egg (poached?) mixed in. Had we immediately ordered another three more bowls of this wonderfully tasty dish I doubt if there'd have been much of an objection! Okonomiyaki - a savory pancake. Good. We didn't want to leave without a bit more. So, we ordered the Senmaizuke, pickled turnip and chili with a sweet, tangy vinegar marinade, and the Shiitake no fukumeni, mushrooms simmered in a sweet and savory broth. Both of these relatively small dishes were quite delicious - but really would have tasted best as early appetizers. The Kirin beer really hit the spot. Service was quick and efficient. Pacing was fine with no rush despite the line that had formed in the little foyer. YELPER HINT: if you're stuck in the line but thirsty, you can go on in and stand at a small (2 ft. wide) open section of the bar and order/pay for beers (not sure about their cocktails) and then re-take your place in line. In short, Izakaya could - and likely will - provide your tastiest, most interesting and perhaps even your most delicious meal in wonderful Oslo.

We chose as appetizers the Takoyaki and the Prawns with chili oil and Bao Buns, followed by the Grilled turbot on the bone and the Kebab. Migrated from a small basement to soaring ceilings and 45 seats, the open kitchen with lots of fire stretched in front of a larger one in back, Katla utilizes mostly local ingredients but bold flavors and family-style service to impart a vibe matched to 80s rock playing a bit too loudly overhead. Quite the opposite of "New Nordic," Atli's cooking more focused on Meat and Salt than Flowers or fermentation, it is with Frozen Margaritas in hand that most guests get started on small bites including August's Pork Rinds matched to Bacon Aioli and Crab Tostadas complimented by creamy Avocado. Lighted by lamps and expansive windows, service not particularly friendly but efficient, course three finds Turnips softened by Milk amidst Mussels and Roe while its follow-up of spicy Prawns are good are their own but better atop fluffy freshly steamed Bao. Loading everything with Umami, quite unlike his Scandinavian contemporaries, Turbot arrives next in a sizable portion flecked with char, each bite picked or sucked from the bone nicely cooked and ready to be eaten on its own or augmented by condiments including Salsa, Peppers or Rice. Open late at the bar, Pepper Crab a favorite amongst walk-ins choosing to eat a la carte, Katla's Duck Mole eats every bit as earthy and aromatic as many in Mexico while Dessert of housemade Chips, Coconut Sorbet and piquant Chocolate is as tasty as it is simple.

The menu has lots of sushi and sashimi choices and many other main courses like teriyaki, tempura, pibimpab and so on. I decided do try the pibimpab which was very nice and freshly made with lots of vegetable, beef and a nice chili sauce. It also came with a miso soup and a small bowl of kimchi. I enjoyed my meal and the service was also great. I am told it's packed during lunch with people who work in the area. It's just outside the Lysaker train station. A good place for a meal which I am sure I will come to again.

We started with the spring rolls and wontons for entre. These are tasty morsels. Fresh and clean. The salad includes a real bite from chili oil but we all love a bit of heat...ikke sant. My daughter enjoyed the kimchi pancakes and as she is vegetarian, it's nice to find a place that is not too expensive with genuine vegetarian items that are also really tasty. And if you a desert person...ginger infused creme brulé is not to be missed. As we live in the area, sort of, we'll definitely be back to enjoy this lovely blend of Japanese and Korean cusine. And at Lysaker stasjon??? Who'd av thunk it?
