This review speaks to JA's takeout ramen during COVID. Been here twice and have ordered ramen and appetizers. The broth - for both the tonkatsu and veggie ramen - is flavorful and satisfying. The toppings are good and the noodles are a great texture. Love their takeout containers that keep the broth separate from the noodles until you combine. The tempura appetizers, both shrimp and veggie, are also decent. Only complaint is that they don't have the classic tempura sauce. It's more like a mixture of soy sauce they use. They also sell some Asian drinks like strawberry milk but it's $4, pretty expensive. Would definitely recommend if you're looking for good ramen. I had actually gone to this restaurant several times and really enjoyed it. However, my last experience gave me a different perspective and has changed my mind about it all. I had ordered my beer and for some reason customers have to open their own bottles. Because they had the beer bottle opener at hip level attached to the wall. It was at a really bad angle, and I ended up snapping the neck and slicing my hand open. I was really embarrassed about it, and ignored my hand as I made my way back to my table, upon getting into my table, I realized how bad the cut was and the trail of blood from the front counter to the table. I tried to immediately go to the bathroom so I can figure out a way to stop the bleeding, but someone was in there which made me just have a pile of blood on the floor by the bathroom as well. After 20 minutes, I was able to get the blood under control. I asked the workers for a towel and let them know that I had cut myself really bad and I needed help cleaning. They would not give me a towel to help me clean, nor did they offer to help either. I had to go to the bathroom, and retrieve my own paper towels to get the whole restaurant cleaned up... just water.... In fact, they asked me if I wanted to buy another beer since the other one had glass in it.... Very disappointed that customer safety was not a priority, nor did they offer to make the moment right in any kind of way. There's a theme here and it's WATER. I ordered the Tonkatsu ramen, Shrimp Tempura salad and a Thai tea. The ramen came out visually appealing but one thing was evident, broth looks watery. Even my Thai tea looks watered down. And the taste was true to how it looked. Broth was good but could be a bit thicker. Tea was ok but could be a bit creamier. Salad was pretty good but should stay in the appetizer side - I hope no one orders it thinking it's a meal itself. But I like the salad - maybe only the salad. Now a few things dropped the score down here. Guy behind register seemed extremely unenthusiastic with taking the order and serving the food. He was the only one there at the time (3:00), tables were uncleared of dishes and maybe he's irritated that staff didn't show up to help til 3:15. I don't know. Benefit of the doubt here. But one strange thing was he walked by our table while we were eating, grabbed the extra unopened pair of chopsticks on our table that was under a piece of napkin (he gave us 3, and we used 2, my toddler didn't need it) walked back towards register but then turned around halfway and delivered that chopstick to another group of customers. Ok no big deal - but no word of courtesy, no comments let alone a bit unsafe in means of covid (towards the others) but it was just all kind of weird. Ramen is very good here. Chewy noodles. Rich, flavorful tonkotsu broth with plenty of condiments like a nicely soft-boiled egg, bamboo shoots, fresh bean sprouts. Service is good, selection of beers great. I will revisit this review and perhaps raise it after I go back and order Katsu Pork Ramen again, but ask for the pork cutlet on the side, on a plate. While the pork tasted good, when I got my bowl, all the cutlet was submerged in the broth and sogged out. This place is definitely on my local favorites list for Tucson. read more

I loved JA ramen curry, it reminded me of my mid 20's when I lived in Chicago and used to go to Argyle and Vietnam town to get pho. Wonderful flavors, tasty meat, nice restaurant ambiance and friendly staff. It's mid town so not to far from anyone. Lots of variety on the menu, my mom got the Vegas roll and although I would not say it's a sushi place it's not bad but the pho is why you go. I am excited to go back I would highly recommend to anyone looking for good Pho. read more

I haven't tried their ramen, but their udon was good. A bit pricy for what it is, but I guess it was worth trying. I got the curry udon and takoyaki. Takoyaki was $9 and came with 5 pieces. Udon was like $16. We also got the pork donburi, but it tasted very cinnamon-y. (Weird) I wouldn't recommend that one. My friend said it usually doesn't taste like that but who knows. If the prices were reasonable, I would probably try their ramen, but I don't think what I ordered was worth it. read more

Reaaaallly good curry! Came in for Ramen and then the guy at the counter said he loved the curry so I decided to try the pork curry dumplings (med heat). They were so delicious! This was an overall good experience. We came in for lunch just before a crowd hit. We ordered some nan, curry, and ramen. The man was kind of flat and lacking somewhat in flavor. The chicken and cheese curry was good. The fried chicken was tender on the inside with a satisfying crunch on the outside. The rice and chicken were ample, but I think there should have been more curry sauce. I got a spice level 4 and was happy as it gave a kick but didn't burn my face off. The flavor was good as well. We also ordered shoyu and tonkutsu ramen, both of which were huge in size and delicious in flavor. The restaurant was immaculate, including the restrooms. The size was accommodating for not feeling cramped. The ordering process was easy with a menu being highly visible. The ordering here is done at the counter before you sit down. They give military discount. The staff were all social and friendly. The dish ware was clean. I also liked the hanging TV's and multiple windows. All in all I liked this place and will likely come back if in the area. Decided to try this place out for the 1st time because it was rated 4 stars. Customer service: staff was not welcoming or helpful. We tried asking questions about the menu but got nothing but attitude from the staff member who was taking our order despite explaining that it was our 1st time ordering from here. The staff member kept rolling his eyes at us and made us feel as if we were doing him a disservice. Dining area: extremely spacious and great for social distancing. Food: ordered the fried dumplings, spicy tonkatsu soup, tan tan soup, and chicken Katsu w/rice. All were delicious and very filling. Favorite of the dishes was the chicken katsu, then spicy tonkatsu. Least was the tan tan. We also ordered extra noodles. Their beverage dispenser was not working at the time of our visit so we had to get water and canned beverages. They did have Thai tea so I ordered that and it was pretty good. Prices: decent considering the amount of food you receive. Would give this place more stars if the service was better. So I was pretty famished on Sunday afternoon and I was craving ramen (not pictured because I devoured it). Of course I search around and I was pretty interested in this place. I ordered the Spicy Miso Ramen, Vegetable Dumplings, and Shrimp Tempura. I not only received my food in a very reasonable time but the service was super friendly. The food was fresh and hot and it quenched my raging hunger. The vibes in the restaurant are really chill and the music is great. Apparently this place was acquired by JA Ramen, after lots of hopes, i ordered a ramen but asked them to make it vegetarian. I also ordered a seaweed salad. This was my first time giving JA Ramen a try, let me start by saying that this place is way over priced for Ramen. I don't mind paying good $ but the Ramen better be amazing. Well, this ramen was anything but that. The broth in the ramen when it arrived was like warm at best. The noodles in the broth were not ramen noodles they were I kid you not angel hair pasta disguised as ramen noodles. This ranks at almost the bottom of my list of places to eat ramen in Tucson. The layout of the restaurant was super confusing. There were 2 signs that said 'please wait to be seated' but after standing there for a couple minutes, nobody approached to seat us. We moved to the other 'please wait to be seated' sign and waited for a couple more minutes to be seated. Many of the tables were dirty and not ready for new customers despite the place is only 1/3 full. We sat down, and were told to push the button when ready to order. After pushing it twice, several minutes apart, nobody came to take our orders and we had to flag down somebody to take our order. 15 minutes passed after we gave the waitress our order and waiting for our food, she came back and asked to take our order again because it's apparently lost and she doesn't know where it is; laughed when we asked what happened to it. This is unacceptable. When the food came, after another 15 minutes, they got one of our 3 dishes wrong. We asked for a tonkotsu ramen and it came out as spicy tonkotsu ramen. I understand that it is the first day of opening, and everybody is still getting used to everything, but the fact that they lost our order then gave us the wrong item, it is just unacceptable for a business. The foods are of decent size and tasted okay, but nothing impressive. I got the combination beef stew, vegetable and pork cutlet curry, which tasted like the curry sauce from the box at Lee Lee with meat and vegetable. My companions both got ramen: Tonkotsu and Sesame Ramen. My friend said that the Tonkotsu broth tasted more like shoyu and I agree. It's missing the richness of a Tonkotsu broth. As for the Sesame ramen, nowhere on the menu states it is going to be spicy and it came out very red and spicy to the point that it's difficult to consume. read more

What can I say? I've had better (when it comes to Ramen). Despite some bad reviews, I wanted to try the ramen at Ja regardless. As harsh as it sounds, it just wasn't a meal worth being memorable. I had the miso ramen. It wasn't bad but I wasn't thrilled about it either. The broth lacked flavor and the noodles were mediocre at best. It seems as though the staff is unfamiliar and a bit lost in the kitchen. It's a new restaurant so that may be why but that's the impression I got when I was at the counter paying. I stopped in for some to-go food on my way home from work last week. I got the carrot and chicken with curry and rice. I love how they packed it up for me, with the sauce and and sliced and fried chicken in separate containers, so nothing would get soggy. The cook explained what everything was in my to-go bag.
