I've tried Ramen from Maru different location n brand, it wasn't that great at all... this time I decide to try Maru Plus main brand and different dishes that will be more guaranteed the food quality n taste.... Ordering Curry dishes whether it's Rices or Noodles dishes, it's more guaranteed... just depending on the spice sweetness level n spicy level!! I came back on a Friday night around 7:30p and it was crowded for a later-dinner time. I didn't know they updated to counter-service where you order at the register and they bring your order to you. I was waiting for my friend to show but wanted to grab the last open table, which was a two-seater that had a laptop on it, which I assumed was the restaurant's but the cashier told me to go ahead and sit there (thankfully) so I ordered edamame and an Asahi draft while I waited. It appeared they were short-staffed as the cashier was also acting as server, I think she said they did not have sushi at the time although there was someone at the sushi station, though I came in wanting the mazemen (dry ramen) anyway. She was friendly, but the ordering experience definitely felt rushed as she was the only one taking orders and bringing out food, and the phone also rang before I was about to order but I could tell she needed to pick it up so I remained patient and let her take the call. Once my friend arrived we ordered (again) but since the cashier was so busy with other orders she had forgotten my edamame and beer until we sat down again. The ramen itself was worth the wait as I usually go with soup ramen, but the dry ramen with spicy pork, chashu, green onion, and soft boiled egg was flavorful and the right balance of heat, sweet, and spicy. One of the cooks brought out a bowl of soup ramen and my friend accepted though I guess it wasn't what he ordered, and his correct order came out after a while, but it was slightly confusing. I wish they had another employee helping on such a busy Friday night, and I wish they kept/went back to full-service as counter service with such a big menu, alcohol, and limited seating felt a bit overwhelming for whatever reason. I will chalk up the experience as "understaffed on a busy night" and hope the ordering and timing goes smoother next time, as the food and friendly-albeit-busy service are worth the experience. read more

If you're ever caught in the "I can't decide what I want to eat" mood, Maru Plus is a good option. They offer signature Japanese dishes such as Ramen, Sushi, Onigiri, Curry, Japanese sandwiches, Omurice, etc. Their service is fast, and the ambiance is very relaxed. At this visit, I had the Tonkotsu Pork Ramen. The portion was generous, but the quality was okay. They do have a salad bar where you can add more toppings to your ramen at no extra cost. Bottom line: Maru Plus is where variety meets value. Come hungry, or with friends that can't make up their minds, and leave full without breaking the bank. read more

Maru is solid fast-casual Japanese food that can make good food depending on your patience and what you're going to order. What I liked: I'm not a big ramen person (everyone else in here seemed to be); I prefer to get a nice donburi--basically the same stuff over rice instead of broth. I've had the beef, which was good, and the pork, which was even better. They come with decent enough toppings, but if you want more there's an outstanding little condiment bar with sesame seeds, green onions, eel sauce, etc. Basically everything you could ask for. What needs work: Honestly it takes way, way too long to eat here. Whether it's lunch or dinner, busy or slow. On both of my visits, it took 30 minutes to get anything. Make that 40 minutes if you dare to order from their sushi bar, which tastes good but is sloppily made. It's like they have really good ingredients but nobody who knows what they're doing. It's also a little on the pricey side. You're not getting good service or atmosphere, but you're paying about the same as you would in much more comfortable settings. I'm still open to trying more of the menu because again, the food isn't *bad*. If someone asked me to return, I probably would. I just wouldn't recommend it to my friends. read more

My friend who is a Tucson local brought me here, and I was shocked I had not tried it before. The interior of the restaurant had fun murals, and the Staff was incredibly friendly. The guy at the cashier helped me make my order and set me up with a punch card. The menu has an expansive amount of dishes that are all fairly priced, including several lunch specials. I had never tried udon before, so I settled on the beef udon with the traditional bonito broth. I was blown away at how flavorful it was, the beef alone was so tender delicious. I am highly anticipating returning to try more menu items. I recommend this place to anyone looking for an affordable bite to eat or good Japanese food. read more

Not what I was expecting. It's the type of restaurant that you pay at the counter, and they deliver at your table. The sashimi was delish, and was served with rice, seaweed and avocado. The sushi roll had way too much rice, and I only ate half of it. They do take extra care on the presentation of the food, which is always nice. Not sure if I'd go back. Nothing wrong with it per se, but didn't hit the spot for "going out to eat". Maybe more appropriate if you're looking for something quick for lunch. read more

My go-to Japanese restaurant! The food here is good and reliable with a large variety. The quality of the fish is good, and it doesn't hurt my wallet *too* bad! I think their ramen is where they shine, but I haven't had anything bad yet. Their handrolls are generously packed and sit at an excellent price. My favorite meal from them is probably a tie between the Tantanmen ramen and their handrolls! The service is always good, and I love how much thought they put into decorating everything. This is a small, cozy restaurant on Campbell and Glenn. First, you order and pay at their counter. It's very casual and needs a deep cleaning. We ordered all plant based dishes and our dishes were not as tasty as we'd hope. The veggie ramen had an odd taste, minimal vegetables. They have a help yourself bar with sauces and condiments. They were out of more than 50% of the bar. We have a two time rule to visit restaurants even if the first time was mediocre. We wanted to love this place but between the lack of cleanliness, running out of important menu ingredients, low quality/wilted veggies and herbs, and lack of delicious flavors, we definitely won't be going back. Hopefully management can get this place back to the high quality it was when they were Yoshimatsu's. read more

Atmosphere was great, cool music and interesting artwork and anime knickknacks etc. now let's talk food and quality and service and overall experience. Ordered one sushi lunch special, one onogiri lunch special with kagarri chicken and two specialty rolls. One beer and one fountain drink. $80. Miso soup came out fine. Sushi lunch came out followed closely by Godzilla roll ($18) sushi lunch was suspect on first bite of spicy tuna roll. Tasted super metallic and not fresh. Godzilla roll had a piece of plastic in it and and when the sushi chef came out to apologize and offer us a repeat of the roll and stated that the plastic might've come from wrapping the roll in plastic and cutting it. Then I pointed out the missing finger tip of the glove he was wearing still that matched the plastic in my roll. I let him know it's fine, but I'm still waiting on my spring rainbow roll $19 and he said something I couldn't hear and ran off. Rainbow roll showed up 10 minutes later (clearly forgotten) and the yellowtail looked like dried jerky and wasn't pleasant to eat. Finally we ask about the chicken from the original lunchbox that had yet to arrive and was told it would be rt out. We placed our original order at 2:17 and finally got our chicken at 3:05 pm after all the poor service and terrible experience already. So apparently chicken is served as a dessert course here. Also the condiment bar was gross, depleted and dirty with nasty and empty squeeze bottles as well as the silverware that I wiped off myself before using. Overall not worth the money at all. Really loved the summer soba special. It's such a good option for tucson summers when you want noodles, but it's too hot for soup (noodles are warm temperature). The tempura is also pretty crispy and yummy. The soba dipping sauce was also great for the tempura (improved w the onion crisps and sesame seeds from the sauce bar). Didn't love the matcha lemonade (did not expect/enjoy the sour bitter taste). Came back for a week later for the lunch bento (fish) which was also decent, but the soba is still #1 for now. I particularly enjoyed the croquette portion of the bento. Good value. It's a fairly casual store where you order at the front and then sit and wait for your food. I really wanted to try Maru Plus because of their many vegan/vegetarian options. I was really disappointed in their food. The vegan mushroom ramen came with the mushiest rice noodles. The broth was very salty and one note (soy sauce) and the mushroom stems were completely raw . I couldn't eat it. The fried tofu appetizer was essentially the same as the mushroom ramen soup without the noodles. Soggy, gummy fried tofu sitting in soy broth. 2 stars because my husband thought his ramen (pumpkin ramen) was decent and they did refund my bowl of noodles. Sadly, I won't be back. read more

Maru's menu hasn't changed much from when it used to be Yoshimatsu; but now, instead of it being a sit down restaurant, you order at the counter in the back. There's also a salsa bar looking table that has ramen toppings like bean sprouts, green onions, different sauces (soy, ponzu). The food is still really good. Everything was fresh, crispy where it should be and well seasoned. I wish my poke deluxe had more fish, but that's the only gripe I have. You can also still buy some Japanese tchotchkes/figurines, which are all by the register. read more

This is an order at the register type of place. There is just enough kitch to make the restaurant fun. Godzilla on the wall is great. The staff could not be more helpful and friendly. They went way beyond their job descriptions that is certain. Now the food we ate was AMAZING! There was a great selection for vegetarians. That made me happy and my daughter enjoyed other selections. First off, loved the eclectic decor. It's giving an 80s vibe with a mural of Godzilla and its collection of toy figurines by the cash register counter. The indoor seating is spacious and so is their parking lot. As for the food I decided to try out their dry ramen and it was disappointing because the noodles were a bit overcooked and the meat topping was very salty. I couldn't even finish the dish. Thankfully the egg topping and the bokchoy that came with it were good. There were other customers that seemed to enjoy it there so I'll give it another try in the future. read more

Over-seasoned yellowtail, underseasoned salmon, sushi rice that tasted of lemon- truly a swing and a miss, and I've been coming here since it was yoshimatsu. Price hikes and quality drops? I was a long-time fan of Yoshimatsu, so I am delighted to see that a lot of my favorites have made it onto the revamped menu of Maru Plus! The new concept is counter service, and a lot of the old decor has been removed, so the restaurant feels more open and sleek. The line to order took a long time, but once we ordered the food was brought out quite quickly. Though I was comforted to see some of my favorites on the menu, I tried the onigiri, which are new! I got the tuna mayo, the edamame sesame, and the salmon. They came out warm and well-made, and didn't fall apart at all as I ate. Out of what I tried, the tuna mayo was the best. My friend got the Tonkatsu Ramen, which she reported is as delicious as ever. We'll definitely be back for more ramen, sushi, and curry! read more

We were big fans of Yoshimatsu so we were hoping Maru Plus was just as good! We went around 8 pm, it was not busy so we were able to order and sit down right away. You order at the counter and then choose a table. The menu seemed similar to Yoshimatsu's with some new things too! I ordered a spicy salmon sushi roll, miso soup (*GLUTEN FREE!!*) and a salmon onigiri. My husband ordered the vegetable udon. Everything was very good! It's semi-rare to find gluten free miso soup at a restaurant, so I was very excited for that. I wish there was a larger miso soup to order. My sushi roll and onigiri were also very tasty. My husband loved his soup! Lots of different vegetables. I want to order this next time (but with rice noodles to make it gluten free), it looked so good! We have been waiting for our food for over an hour. They brought out California roll half an hour ago. It was fine. My tea took 30 mins to arrive. The order for our two main rolls was apparently "dropped" by the new sushi chef. I appreciate apology by guy at register and ultimate offer to refund. They did bring us an extra California Roll -- but I think they didn't realize they had already delivered the first one an hour before. Final: jalapeño roll never delivered. They brought us something else by mistake. Table next to us also had trouble with an order. Good help is hard to find, I understand, but an hour and a half after we arrived we still haven't gotten the full meal we ordered. They have apologized. We won't return. read more

I've read lots of other positive reviews, but Maru Plus disappointed me. It's this hybrid takeout/fast food/dine-in model that takes some of the relaxation out of dining out. I'm ok with informal dining and holes in the wall, but table-getting insecurity followed by having the order-taking line snake closely behind our table took the experience down a few notches. Food was decent: edamame and cucumber salad were great; veggie gyoza were decent; sushi is fresh and nicely presented. Nice that they can make Ramen vegetarian by replacing chicken broth with vegetable, and it was pretty good. Wine lovers beware: the day I was there, they had several beer choices, but only one wine -- a white (and they had to do a lot of digging to find it). I don't expect fine wine in a place like this, but was surprised. I see that the online menu says they offer "Chadonet" and "Cabanet", but not when I was there. Check first if this is something that matters to you. As a red wine person who doesn't drink beer, I opted for water. read more

Okay I know I've already posted a review but that was the first time I was here. I've come here at least five times now and every time it has been amazing. They have yummy, authentic food, and while service is mostly hands-off, they always greet guests and thank them as they leave. The wait time is minimal for cooked meals, but stuff from the sushi bar takes longer. Not that I mind, since I usually have a delicious bowl of miso soup while I wait. The prices are average for the area (kinda high) but they have decently large servings so I always have leftovers. Did I mention the food is amazing? The restaurant is a bit loud during rush hour but usually there is calm Japanese music playing and when there are fewer people it is a lovely experience. My mom's go-to is the pork fried rice which is better than it sounds. The pork isn't that grisly stuff they have at American-Chinese restaurants; it is tender, if a bit fatty. I've been exploring more but everything I've tasted has been amazing. My favorite side is the takoyaki, which is dairy free! Not vegan because of the octopus, but I have a mild dairy allergy and they are super conscientious about it. All in all it's a nice restaurant and my go-to whenever I'm in Tucson. Definitely the place to go if you love Japanese cuisine like me. read more

Now this is poke I would recommend. I love how they have pictures of all dishes displayed on the menu on the wall. Makes ordering so much easier. They currently have a summer menu in addition to their regular one. Generous portion of variety of fish on top of very tasty ramen. Their seaweed salad is awesome. The fish does not have strong fish odor like in other poke places in town. The restaurant is small but very well designed and decorated. You order at the counter and then find yourself a table. Some of the chairs need updating, the leather is peeling. There is not much parking in front but there is a shared large parking lot in the back. Overall the experience was great and I want to go back and try some of their other dishes. read more
