As a former Ultimo local - and representative authority on all things Ultimo, AND all things related to the former NSW Government Printing Office - the Lord Wolseley has at times been the focal point of my world, both social and academic. What a mad, crazy thing to say about a pub. That's probably not very helpful for YOU, is it, since you want to know about the pub itself. Right. The Lord Wolseley has a great history. Built in 1881, the Woz was the drinking hole of the infamous Sydney crim Neddy Smith, and company ... and also the favoured pub for the letterpress printers at the NSW Government Printing Office. At five minutes to 1pm on a weekday, the publican would line the bar with 30 cold schooners, and at 1 minute past 1, the printers would rush in. 5 minutes later they were all heading back to the bar for a second shout. In recent years the Lord Wolseley has changed hands a fair bit. For a while we were worried it would close down. It is now owned by TV mogul Errol Sullivan, who has allegedly promised to keep it as a "good old pub" and not ritz the place up. His sons might be running it, and they might be twins. It's also a little off the beaten track, so not attractive to developers and the big-bar owners of Sydney. What to expect? It's a bit run down, and rather narrow. You can drink outside in the village green, if you behave yourself. The drink price is average, and you might get some raised eyebrows if you try to order a fancy cocktail or an upmarket wine. There are plenty of old locals milling around, happy to engage you in conversation or tell you what a wanker you're being. Oh yes -- one of the best things about the Lord Wolseley is that it HAS NO POKIES. Ok, I think I need to repeat that. THIS PUB HAS NO POKIES. Wait! I'm sort of wrong. Technically the Woz has pokies, but they are decommissioned and turned off, shoved into a room in the basement. It makes me grin whenever I see those dead machines - they look like dead daleks. Victory to the Dr! The kitchen at the Woz has in the past been pretty dire - very greasy stuff with a bit of a Thai twist. But with the new ownership, things may change in the back, we shall see...

While I would say that the patrons had even spilt out onto the road, there were a number of barrels out the front where they would consume their beers and chat with their mates. As a pub it is actually really nice, and has quite a lot of character. There is even a really nice restaurant out the back. Okay, it is pretty small (and really crowded when I was there), but it is still one of those pubs that I would definitely want to visit again.

Chatswood Chase shopping centre is also within walking distance. Sebel Suites is modern, pristine and run efficiently. Location wise, it's convenient but doesn't have beautiful views unlike Darling Harbour and other popular areas. The hotel is comfortable and the staff are accommodating. Sebel Suites also offers long term accommodation. There is plenty of public transport nearby, making sightseeing very easy. Parking is also available (at a cost) and is great for those who have driven interstate or who have rented a hire car.The hotel/apartments are not suitable for a romantic weeknight. My family and I stayed here for a week or two upon returning to Australia after 9 years living overseas. The central position allowed us to visit family and friends, go house hunting and do odd jobs. It was a little expensive but was very convenient. We could also do the shopping and with plenty of entertainment nearby, we had lots to do and see. Sebel Suites is most suitable to those conducting business in the North Shore area. The hotel is also a short 15 minute train trip to Sydney CBD. If you want a view, it is best to book a room on the top floors. Otherwise you will most likely have a view of the train station or other high rise buildings. Within our apartment we had a washer and dryer which was a major positive. The rooms were also very spacious.

There is no door separating the bedroom from the bathroom. It's just a curtain. Also, the shower has nothing to block the water from seeping out to the bathroom floor. As a result, everytime you take a shower the bathroom floor gets flooded making a mess and a potential slipping hazard. Not sure who designed this. Also, if you get a single twin bed room there is no outlets next to the bed. You need to borrow an extension cord from the hotel. Of note, they will let you borrow a travel adapter as well for free.

The front desk people are all very friendly. I'm giving a 3 star rating because of the room itself. The bathroom in particular was horrendously designed. There's a window looking into the toilet area and anyone from the adjacent room could view us at anytime if they dared to open their curtains. The window doesn't make sense because there's not even a good view from the window, its just a dirty alley way? Then the shower has no delimiter so water spreads everywhere. Really just a bizarre design, but it can be improved drastically by adding a curtain for that window. Overall not a bad hotel, just ask not to be placed in any room ending in 07 or 08.

However upon going upstairs my first impression evaporated. It is fantastic up there. It is like a smoky 1930's saloon with big, old furniture much of which is falling apart, it is dim and is pure atmosphere. I loved it. If you arrive early they have locked luggage storage. The view from the deck! No hostel can top it. A view of the bridge and opera house. And the location is so perfect for touristy things. They are in a safe neighborhood called "the rocks" with plenty of things to see and eat. 5 minute walk to the trains, buses, and taxis.
