We came here for a late breakfast/early lunch. It is somewhat more of a refined cake and dessert…read moretype bakery, and the dessert items did look fabulous in the case. For breakfast however, it wasn't very good for me as there were very limited lower carb/higher protein items. We ordered an almond croissant and a sausage and shiraz roll along with a flat white coffee. We sat outside as they didn't have the AC running and it was really way too warm inside. They have table service inside and servers that run out the food you had ordered at the counter. They were all super friendly and even asked if everything was satisfactory as they cleared our table. Unfortunately, neither of the baked goods were great. The almond croissant had a nicely laminated dough although it needed a tad of salt. The dough was buttery however lacking flavor most likely due to a lack of salt in the butter they used in the dough. The filling was almost like really dense cake batter with basically no almond flavor - the texture seemed almost right, maybe they forgot the almond paste or almond extract. We are used to a much, much stronger flavored almond croissant with almond paste inside. There were nicely toasted almond slices on the top. The sausage roll was a real disappointment. Although it looked really nice it was very heavy, seemed greasy and had two fundamental flaws. The dough was too thick around the sausage so when they wrapped it and baked it there was way too much dough and it was actually nearly raw all along the bottom edges. The sausage was not crumbled or taken out of the casing so when you bit through the roll (or even cut it as we did) the entire sausage slipped right out of the dough and left a big empty hole! It did have nice caramelized onions and some herbs or spinach (didn't eat enough to know exactly!) between the dough and sausage - they might have contributed to the wet/raw sogginess of the dough if they were not cooked enough and then released water into the dough. They were very gracious when I asked if I could get a refund for the sausage roll as I could not find anything else I wanted to get as a replacement. Our server could not have been any more professional and nice about it. He got approval from his manager and gave us the refund. The flat white was very good. If I needed to eat some lovely desserts I'd give them another try given their professional staff and good service.

Located in Salamanca Square, Banjo's is a bakery cafe that is part of an Australian chain. The logo…read moreof the cafe reminds me of the one for Panera Bread and has a similar cafe vibe. Though the food offerings are different as they appeal to Aussie tastes. The interior of the cafe is cozy as it looks like the inside of a ski lodge. Here you will find a large selection of bakery offerings to choose from including breads, meat pies and pastries. They also serve sandwiches and coffee so you can enjoy a flat white here. I didn't want to get a full breakfast as I was getting an early lunch in a few hours, so I looked for a bakery to enjoy some pastries. I saw a sign promoting a smoked salmon quiche which piqued my interest to try this place. Unfortunately it wasn't available in the morning so I looked through the bakery case instead. I settled on the ham quiche ($2.10) and sausage roll ($2.40) with a regular flat white ($4.40). The ham quiche is a bit of a small size, so you need to order more than one or something else to feel full. That said, I liked this pastry as was nice and eggy. The sausage roll was also on the petite side, but it was enjoyable as well. The sausage in this pastry reminds me of the taste of canned Vienna sausages. As for the flat white, it didn't have any coffee art but it was as good as the cups that I had earlier on my trip. Nice and frothy. If you have never had one before, it is basically a bolder latte with a higher proportion of coffee to milk. If you are looking for a lighter breakfast in Hobart that is inexpensive and satisfying, Banjo's is worth checking out. Particularly for their meat pies and pastries.

Oh. Well this is awkward. This place has a stellar…read morereputation around Hobart, but I'm going to drop a truth bomb and tell you that their bagels really are not that great. Well, they're okay, but not truly great. I'm from The States originally and grew up eating bagels with all sorts of weird and wonderful toppings- my all time favourite place makes THIRTY different varieties of bagels daily. With l sorts of fillings and toppings- I know what a great bagel should be: firm on the outside, doughy In the very Center. The bagels here always seem stale, even when they're fresh. I'm sure they aren't making every single bagel fresh every morning, but that's not really a reason to say a mediocre bagel is an amazing bagel. Coffee is okay, I've had way worse but it takes a really long time to get the orders out, so don't come if you're in a hurry. If you're vegan or vegetarian, there are a lot of options which would be nice (unless you think too much about yeast being... a living organism that is intentionally killed solely so we can consume it. But I digress), but realistically with the prices they charge you could buy a bag of supermarket bagels and make your own bagel how you want it and have enough left over for a big bowl of matza ball soup.
