The dim sum cart came around quick, and we loaded up on hakaw, siu mai, char siu bao, and those amazing crispy taro puffs--everything was hot, fresh, and tasted just like the old-school spots back home. The spare ribs were tender and saucy, not overly sweet, and the yang chow fried rice had that perfect wok hei. Service was friendly even though it was packed; our server made sure we had hot tea refills without us asking. Super affordable too--we fed six of us and still had leftovers for under 2k. Total comfort food win. Definitely heading back next time we're in the area. Five stars all the way!

I can summarily declare that all the items we ordered were below our culinary standards in the following order from worst to not so bad. HK style fried noodles, the sauce was peanuty tasting poured over noodles. Horrible looking. The congee is not very appealing to the eyes and the palate. The duck was bony. The congee itself was barely hot. Siomai was no good either. The roasted duck with rice again lacking presentation appeal. The tofu skin roll is ok thus the 2 star. The waiter was very green. Served our sodas without glasses. Avoid and don't believe the hype.

We had 2 servings of fresh shrimp hakaw and scallop dumplings, asado siopao, stir-fried beef hofan and steamed fish with garlic which we were all able to finish in no time. The dimsum were at it's finest -- comapring to the other dimsum shops we've tried. Hofan was something that we ordered just because it looks appetizing on the next table (haha!), but it never disappointed us. The beef toppings were huge and generous. The fish dish was their bestseller under Seafood category, in which we ought to try. It was delish but looks oily. Nevertheless, perfect as well. We were billed around 1100php for 4, which is not so bad. The servers were friendly and consistently serving us with a smile. Plus points for having wifi access! We had agreed to meet at President, which I had heard of but never actually gone to. One of the guys said they had really good dimsum. So fine, we agreed to meet there for lunch. We came in sep'fore a waiter came to take our orders. He seemed surly but we were all peeved, and made our feelings known. After he took our orders, we thought our ordeal would be over. It wasn't. I swear it took close to an hour for our meals to get to our table. I don't know if it was our collective bad mood, but the food didn't taste all that good to any of us. As far as I know, none of us have ever gone back to President Tea House. What for? There are so many great restaurants in Chinatown, so why bother giving this a second chance?

President Tea House - If you enter this place hungry, better buy some fruits outside as the service can be slower than slow.

Savory Chicken brings back so many good memories of good and lots of laughter. Their sauce is so addicting as I love to slather it on top of my rice. Sometime, I like mixing the sauce with some banana ketchup to produce that sweet and salty mixture. Makes it even better! So I was heartbroken to learn about the fire that recently happened at their main Escolta restaurant. Hopefully, this well-loved restaurant will get back to business pretty soon. While there are plenty of other Savory branches in the Metro, nothing beats the original Savory.

The place is old looking and past its prime but customers doesn't seem to mind. They come here for great tasting food and Savory doesn't disappoint. My favorite is their pancit. Not the dry pancit that we usually get from other restaurants but the one with thick sauce. Generous amounts of vegetables, mushrooms and meat garnishes the noodles. The location of the original branch is a bit hard to reach specially if you don't have your own car but I still recommend the said place. It's located in the old escolta which used to be the center of commerce in old Manila. This is the Ayala Center of BGC of Spanish times. The food itself will make the trip to Savory worth it but you might as well include a sidetrip and explore the grandeur of old Escolta. You can walk off the calories that you gained from the delicious dishes of Savory and have a trip to memory lane at the same time. Sounds like a pretty good bargain for me.

It's a struggle. On the one hand you want good food, on the other you want to eat three square meals for each day of the week. Yvan Navy (The Y in Yvan is pronounced like the E in Greek) is one of the best places to eat around Mendiola. Their quarter pounders and massive kebabs are fifty and sixty pesos respectively. All their food is fresh off the grill. You can expect a healthy serving of veggies and, wait for it, cheese on either the kebab or the burger. Few places can rival this place in terms of value and taste. The day I found this place was one of the few times I spontaneously called it a cheat day. I ended up ordering two kebabs and a single burger in one sitting and soon found myself eating there once a day for the remainder of the week. Yvan Navy is the kind of restaurant that I love most because their establishments tend to be simple and marked with a lack of frippery and nonsense. They can afford to make good food at such a cheap price because they choose to invest in their ingredients and their service.

One night, my brother and I got hungry and decided to scout for food outlets. We stumbled upon Yvan Navy since it's the nearest one and we haven't tried this yet. I ordered their quarter pounder (P50), my brother got a double quarter pounder (P100). For a quarter pounder with that price, I'm surprised that the thickness of the patty is generous enough to satisfy your cravings. I will definitely come back and taste their other offerings.
