Jackson Hewitt charged me $484 as their service charge for my Robinhood shares, even though I made no profit from them. My husband and I filed a joint tax return at their Cayce, Columbia branch in February 2025. According to our W-2 statements, we were supposed to receive a $4,000 refund (federal and state combined), but Jackson Hewitt claimed we would only get $2,400. Meanwhile, my colleagues with similar tax situations received their full refund amounts as stated on their W-2s. When I contacted Jackson Hewitt, they had no explanation or justification. Unfortunately, I waited till the 15th of April , no excuses, but the local Walmart in another area closed early, closing soon, life events, work etc. I called JH and they mentioned they would be open till 7pm and walk ins were welcomed! Thank goodness! My taxes were done in a professional manner from beginning till end. Tax preparer listened, and responded to all my questions despite me waiting till the deadline. Today I arrived for my scheduled appointment with tax preparer Nicholas at the Jackson Hewitt office on Route 9W in Newburgh, NY. Within two minutes of my arrival, I was leaving the office and vowing never to return. In the two minutes I spent in that office, I was treated in the most unprofessional manner I have ever experienced in my three decades as a self-employed businesswoman. I arrived a few moments early for my appointment. I walked in the door carrying a large see-through bag that contained all of the documentation I would need in discussing my situation with Nicholas. I strode to the desk, greeted the receptionist with a smile, and politely introduced myself and stated that I was there for my 2 pm appointment with Nicholas. The receptionist looked at my bag of documentation with a glare that bespoke disgust. She then asked me several times if I had an appointment, and I answered affirmatively. Each time I responded affirmatively, she again questioned whether I truly had an appointment. I told her that I had called the office in the early autumn to make an appointment, had provided all preliminary information to the person who answered the phone, and was given an appointment with Nicholas for today, November 16, 2017. I also told her that I called the office before I left home to confirm that my appointment was still on and was told that yes, my appointment was on today's schedule. Finally the receptionist rose from her desk and walked into Nicholas's office. I heard her whispering to him. She then came back to the reception area and tentatively said, "OK, you can sit down. Nicholas will see you." My boyfriend Thomas sensed my discomfort and politely asked the receptionist why she looked at my bag of documents with obvious disgust, and she replied, "I've never seen so much paperwork before." My boyfriend politely responded, "She may not need all that documentation, but if she needs it, she's got it." At this point I was close to tears. The documentation that so clearly disgusted the receptionist represents some of the most difficult years of my life: years following my husband's passing, years during which my income plummeted, years during which I often felt overwhelmed with tasks that had once been routine--tasks such as organizing my tax documentation. I had invested several hours into carefully sorting and marking all of the paperwork contained in that bag. Coming to see Nicholas at Jackson Hewitt had felt like a huge step in the right direction. How wrong I was. I calmly told the receptionist the following: "I have never been greeted so rudely and treated so poorly upon entering a professional office as I have in these two minutes since I walked into this office. I have been treated in an utterly unprofessional manner, to the point that I feel like a trespasser. No, I will not meet with Nicholas. I will find another firm with whom to discuss my tax matters." As I turned to leave the office, the receptionist huffed, "Fine, then"--as snottily as a petty, petulant person might respond to an individual held in lowest esteem. My mother, who until today's incident was a Jackson Hewitt customer of the Harriman office and who had recommended that I consult with Jackson Hewitt, was so appalled at the way I was treated that she called and spoke to Nicholas, who--in furtherance of the unprofessionalism and unkindness I had experienced in the office--declined to hear out my mother's concerns and instead repeatedly interrupted her, admitted no wrongdoing on the part of his receptionist, and offered neither words of apology nor an offer to reschedule my appointment and make things right. When Nicholas did let my mother speak, she told him that he had lost three clients today: she and my dad, and me. To which Nicholas offered no response, and at which point my mother ended the conversation. After today's experience at the Jackson Hewitt office in Newburgh, NY, I am certain that the most excruciating interview with an IRS representative would be exceedingly more reassuring than a visit to the Newburgh office of Jackson Hewitt. read more
