Located below the I-495 -Woodrow Wilson Bridge, the park is right at the southernmost point and great water views of Virginia and sites within Maryland like the National Harbor across the Potomac River. There is a walking trail along the river with informational signs and displays that describe the really cool, informative information markers of sights and the past history of the area along the trail. A 10-minute walk on the trail will bring you to other parks (Ford's Landing, Shipyard, and Roberdeaux) and eventually to Old Town Alexandria with its many shops and restaurants --situated along the water. Another added plus is that the park offers a place for fishing, playgrounds, basketball courts, and multi-use fields. I came here with some friends for the first time and had a relaxing time just being outdoors and enjoying this great space in nature. We grabbed a picnic table....while having lunch and taking in the weather. Between the space and multi-use areas, it is the perfect spot to for walks along the river, running, exercising or simply....raking time to put things on pause and enjoy the outdoors. ELITE TIP: It is a good place to park if you are planning to visit Old Town Alexandria and want an easy place to park.....without having to deal with the limited street parking, risk of parking meter tickets or the high price garage parking. and enjoy a walk along the river.

Holmes Run Park (never knew it was a "scenic easement" until I tried to add the Yelp listing) is a…read morelittle over 8 acres of natural wooded area and walking paths in the West End of Alexandria. There are picnic tables and grills, playgrounds, and exercise stations within the park as well. Much of it borders Holmes Run itself, which is pleasant to stroll along, especially after heavy rains when the water is high and tumbling over the small rock ledges. It's a great place to spy a wide variety of birds, white-tail deer, and even fox. In nice weather, Alexandrians take advantage of its trails and open spaces, jogging with their dogs, playing Frisbee, organizing pick-up games of soccer. We feel fortunate to live within spitting distance of the park and use it frequently. Husband is into cycling and uses Holmes Run's paths as a launching point for longer rides. I like to take long walks on the trails, which also connect to Dora Kelly Nature Preserve and Cameron Run Park. On nice days, throngs of our fellow Alexandrians do the same, enjoying this little slice of nature in the city.

There is a pretty cool exercising course along the trail near Beatles Bridge. Also, across from the bridge is a good place to park your car unless you park at the main location called Brenman Park (which I will also review) which is a 5 minute drive. I do feel like the location itself is not safe to run/bike alone so do bring a buddy.

It's worth a look though as the mostly paved trail along Lake Mercer is about 4 miles and it packs a lot into that space. You've got forest, marsh, hills, lake views and even walking across a large earthen dam. The trail is VERY well marked with lots of maps/signs so even I managed to not get lost. There's also a county rec center nearby so you can park there if the Hoos Road lot is full or you need to get something to drink. There's fishing here as well but I didn't fish this trip, maybe next time. There only seem to be a couple of places you can really access the lake to fish from shore so plan accordingly. Even if you don't want to fish, this place is worth the trip for the trail alone. It's almost as good as the Burke Lake trail but WAY less crowded. There's no real amenities here aside from a couple of trash cans and park benches so you're probably just coming here to bike, hike or fish. Check it out but don't tell too many people so it can stay pretty uncrowded!

I saw some people fishing but mostly just walkers and runners. There are no amenities, including bathrooms, so plan accordingly. I came solo on this visit, but I'm looking forward to bringing my stroller and my kids for the next trip to Lake Mercer Park.

That's not always the case. Here you can rest assured. There is lots of supervision. Is it the most exciting one? Nope. There's a good sized area for dogs to run. Am grateful for this, but would like more opportunities for four legged family members. If in the area stop in, as a tired dog is a good dog.

There are two separate playgrounds before the trail-one for 2-5, the other 5-12. The younger kids is on mulch while the older kids has softer padding. There are baby swings, no big swings here. Right next to the playgrounds are the basketball courts. There is a cul de sac to park in or you can park on the street. The lake is open to fishing, no swimming. Lots of dogs on the trail. The trail is stroller-friendly too.

Your best bet is on neighborhood streets. Even then this can be cumbersome. As for fishing a disappointment. On the south side I've caught small bluegill and sunfish. People claim there are bass, but I'm skeptical of this. It's possible but due to the small size of this lake, a limited amount along with any decent keepers. This isn't to say it's worthless. Occasionally during the fall I can get some good outdoor pictures. Bird species are limited.

Area is mowed nicely, no trails to speak of, but able to walk tree line. Birding was okay, with plenty of local residents, so it was a good place to take pics and explore. The trails are shaded and part paved, part unpaved, and mostly flat. The round stepping stones (pictured) across certain sections of the creek, believe it or not, were one of the biggest initial draws for me, and they were actually even more fun to hop through in person, not to mention that the surrounding views and sounds were gorgeous! I appreciate this green space being maintained and available to the community.

The creek has a couple of easy crossings. It's not a destination and I just stopped in on the way to something else, but green spaces like this (even when they are brown for the winter) are important.
