My son can't explain himself very well so he couldn't tell me about his meds
    Liz S.

My son is a 20 year old with Autism, mild intellectual disabilities and mental health issues. We moved to Illinois recently and I have started guardianship process but it wasn't complete at the time of my son's involuntary placement at Jackson Park Hospital. No one there would talk to me even though he always gives permission. I just don't think they wanted to spend the time communicating with me, even though I'm his caregiver. Dr. Reed laughed when I said he needed help dialing the phone to call me and said if he wanted to "talk to his mama," he would. Not true and I didn't get to talk to my son. Four days later, he came home in a medical taxi with no discharge paperwork, no medications and still no one would talk to me. He ended up going back into another hospital where I'm happy to say he finally got the help and follow up care planning that he needed and he has learned to dial my number. I've kept the text messages from Dr. Reed because I cannot believe his level of unprofessionalism and lack of insight into my son's condition. My son is not super verbal but he told me he was scared there and this was his sixth hospitalization and he has never said that before.

    He ran out of Iv!

I was on my way to a gig when my sister called, frantic our other sister, who was visiting for the weekend, had suddenly fallen ill and was taken to Mercy Hospital. I dropped everything and headed there right away. When I arrived, there was confusion about visitors, and my sister was asked to leave so they could treat our patient. When I was finally allowed back, I was alarmed by what I saw: my sister was unconscious, foaming at the mouth, and lying on her back with no doctor or nurse in the room. I immediately turned her on her side so she wouldn't choke. After waiting about 10 minutes with no staff checking in, I went to find help. Nurses in the area couldn't tell me who was assigned to her, and I was given paper towels to manage her condition myself. After about 30 more minutes, I finally found a nurse at the desk who said she was assigned to my sister. When I asked why no one had come to check on her, I was told my sister had been "extra drunk," combative, and had spit on staff so they essentially left her there. Despite this, she had still not received fluids or proper care. The nurse also mentioned her shift was ending soon and that someone else would take over. However, another hour and a half passed with no one checking on my sister. Eventually, a doctor briefly stopped by and said she would wake up in a few hours pending toxicology. When my sister finally regained consciousness, she was disoriented, confused, and not behaving normally. It took multiple attempts just to get assistance for something as basic as helping her to the restroom. At that point, it had been over four hours with little to no care. We requested a toxicology report, especially since her symptoms suggested she may have been drugged. Although blood had apparently been drawn (there were even remnants left in the room), we never received any results. The room itself was also concerning there were gnats and visible lack of cleanliness. When a new nurse came on shift, the attitude was dismissive. We were told we could leave, even though my sister clearly wasn't stable. When asked to collect a urine sample, the nurse refused to assist and said it was only being done to "satisfy" us. We complied anyway, but to this day, we have not received any follow-up or results. This was one of the most neglectful medical experiences I've ever witnessed. My sister could have choked on her own vomit. Over the 4-5 hours we were there, I don't believe her assigned nurse ever once checked on her in the room. Thankfully, we were there to advocate for her but that shouldn't be necessary for someone to receive basic care. I'm sharing this because no family should have to go through something like this. I truly hope Mercy Hospital takes steps to improve patient care and accountability so this doesn't happen to someone else.

At the front information desk, I have sometimes felt dismissed or spoken to harshly when asking for directions or clarification, especially when I mentioned that I had visited before but needed reminders due to medical issues and medication-related brain fog. During some specialist visits, I felt that my responses were not fully acknowledged when I answered questions in ways that were unexpected. This left me concerned that parts of my medical information may not have been clearly reflected in my records. I have also struggled to get assistance from the Galter Life Center. Despite having a referral from my specialists, I have not been able to schedule an appointment or receive clear guidance through in-person visits, phone calls, or email. Additionally, I have attempted to contact Patient Experience and Advocacy several times but have not received responses to my calls or messages. When the system moved to NorthShoreConnect, I hoped communication would improve, but many of my messages there have also gone unanswered. Because of these experiences, I personally feel that my concerns have not been addressed adequately, and I would encourage others to carefully consider their options when seeking care.

I did not have to wait long before I was called into the area where the examination rooms were. Again, I had the feeling I was in a day spa. The environment was very calming, I didn't feel I was at a medical appointment. Once I got into the room, there was a completely separate dressing room. There were flowers and there was a spa robe, not a paper one and the robe actually fitted. And it was nice and soft. I am in pretty good health and don't go to the doctor that often, but man if I had to, this is the place I would run to. The only thing that could have made this visit better was if they had served glasses of bubbles while you waited.

I was also experiencing nausea, stomach pain, headache, sore throat, leg pain, shortness of breath, and I was coughing up blood. I was evaluated and had blood drawn. An IV port was placed in my arm, but I never received any IV fluids or treatment through it. Eventually I was discharged with a diagnosis related to hematuria (blood in the urine) and a cough. I was told the bleeding might be related to dehydration or possibly my prostate because of my age. I was advised to take Tylenol and nausea medication and to return later to see a blood specialist. However, I left the hospital still actively urinating blood and still feeling very sick. I did not feel that my symptoms were taken seriously or that my condition was fully addressed before I was discharged. Another issue that concerned me was that several vials of my blood and my urine sample were left sitting unattended on the counter with my name on them. When I asked about it, I was told it was "extra blood." As a patient, this made me uncomfortable because these were my personal medical samples and should be handled properly. When the IV port was removed, my arm began bleeding heavily, likely because I take blood thinners. My arm was bleeding before I could even put my shirt back on. I had to manage this situation myself. The cleanliness and professionalism of the environment were also concerning. The floor in the area where I was placed had visible blood on it. When I was told to sit in a chair for imaging, the chair appeared dirty and the headrest had a visible dark stain. The doctor who discharged me did not clearly introduce himself or sign the discharge paperwork, and the overall attitude from staff felt dismissive. I left feeling that my symptoms and concerns were not taken seriously. I am 65 years old, and this was the worst emergency room experience I have had at a hospital in my life. I hope this feedback is taken seriously so that patient care, cleanliness, and the handling of patient samples can be improved for others. Mr Dwayne L Coffee
