This was my first performance to see the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra and did NOT disappoint! We attended their Holiday Pops concert. I loved the fact that their coffee series lasted one hour and five minutes. Enough time to keep my kiddo entertained, but not too long where he loses interest. The conductor was personable, lovely, and played a wonderful trumpet. The singers were amazing, especially the young gentleman, Campbell, who did his rendition of Mary Did you Know, which was touching and just beautiful. The list of songs were delightful and loved the balance between instrumental and singing. read more

I attended a Major/Minor concert here last night. This is where high school students or "The Musicians of the JSYO" play with members of the Jacksonville Symphony. Honestly, I was dragged there while saying to my wife that the Yankee game was on, and I wanted to watch that....... The last concert I saw was Alice Cooper like 20 years ago. The orchestra isn't my thing, but I really enjoined this show. Both the professionals and the kids (they were very professional, too) played great. The music was entertaining, and you could tell the kids really took this seriously and practiced hard. I'm only reviewing the venue and the adults. The concert hall is very nice and the acoustics are outstanding. What I saw and heard from the Jacksonville Symphony, I would go see them again. Even if the Yankees were playing. If you've never seen a show here, do yourself a favor and try something new. read more

I have a new found respect for the JSO. I'd never heard them play live but when they announced that they would be doing Motown songs AND right before Mother's Day I had to bring my mother to see them, HAD TO! Hearing them live in the Jacoby Hall was simply magical and watching my mother and others of her generation getting up and dancing like they're teenagers again made me so happy. Also, I got a real kick out of watching some of the musicians having fun during the performance as well. I don't think there's a bad seat in the house but we were seated in the fourth row in the middle and you can just close your eyes, listen, and have your soul soothed. read more

Any major city has a symphony and Jacksonville is no different in that area; we have a great symphony ( it appears about 60 musicians)! I believe they try very hard to attract all types of people like with their Pop Series, where they have performers who present music more current then Gershwin and Beethoven (not that they don't play them but they are in diff series then the Pop series). This tribute performer, Michael Cavanaugh, has performed with Billy Joel music all over the world and was actually chose by Billy Joel to perform with him in a Broadway Musical called Movin' On. It appeared to be be a sold out event and the crowd was certainly happy! read more

We were both music majors and really enjoy listening to some high quality performances. It was their annual free event where they showcase what different styles they can perform and will be performing for this coming season. There was some pop music, classical, show tunes, and a little movie magic. All of it really showed off their incredible musicians' talents. Free night to check out local symphony. We thoroughly enjoyed the venue as well as the music choices the conductor made for this special Free community event. The security staff entering the building were very friendly and courteous as well as the smiling and welcoming ushers. Parking was only a few blocks away so an easy walk but glad I didn't wear dress heals just a comfortable pump. We are looking forward to going back it will hard to choose which event to attend with a variety of options for all music tastes. read more

If you support local, the arts, non-profits or live in Jacksonville and have not been to the Jax Sym, you are missing out. We're pretty lucky to have this much talent in our city. I go about 4-6 times per year and have loved every concert. The Jax Sym is the perfect setting for date night, girls night, family night, or going solo. Think it's not affordable? There are ways to help make it more pocket friendly. l have taken my children since they were young, so just be sure to 1) sign up for their newsletter and 2) check their family concerts page in their website for info on discounts. They have a wide variety of concerts from classical to popular music and jazz. Our favorites are always the Jax Sym at the Movies. This year they did Star Wars, Jurassic Park, and Harry Potter. We adore our symphony! Jacksonville is so fortunate to have such a high caliber symphony that creates such diverse programming for our community. We have enjoyed so many shows over the years - both classical and pop. If you ever get a chance to attend a JSO concert at the Jacoby Symphony Hall [located at Times-Union Center for the Performing Arts] where they usually perform throughout the year, you are in for a treat. What an extraordinary group of musicians in our very own city of Jacksonville! And if you, like me, played an instrument in band [quite horribly, I might add] in highschool or competed in any music competition, I think you can really appreciate the sheer talent of this ensemble. The Robert E. Jacoby Hall is modeled after the Wiener Musikverein in Vienna, Austria and there's not a bad seat in the house as the acoustic build-out is extraordinary. I've gone to quite a few shows and sat front and center as well as up in the nose-bleed sections and the sound in each location was beautiful. And I love being immersed in the music... Courtney Lewis has been the music conductor since 2015. And according to Wikipedia, he is a British conductor and the Music Director of the Jacksonville Symphony and the Assistant Conductor of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. He co-founded the Boston chamber orchestra Discovery Ensemble in 2008 and served as associate conductor of the Minnesota Orchestra from 2009 to 2014. Pretty impressive, right? Overall, going to see and hear the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra perform is an outstanding experience. They also travel the country and perform at other venues. It's a great way to support the local arts and spend a relaxing evening downtown. Definitely worth attending once in your lifetime and surprisingly an affordable activity for the Jax community. read more

The Jacksonville Symphony... where do I begin? If you ever get the opportunity to attend, DO IT! I was very pleased and I have to say I really enjoyed myself. I am already looking forward to going back! Attending a concert at Jacoby Symphony Hall is the perfect way to round out your Friday night plans - Everyone loves getting dressed up and hitting Downtown Jacksonville! I attended the Holiday Pops 2018 concert and it just was fabulous all around! I just couldn't help but smile and sing along to the music. This "Pops" concert included songs like White Christmas and Sleigh Ride. I think my favorite was Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. The choir was lovely and so was the singer, Ben Gulley (who performed recently at Carnegie Hall with The American Symphony.) The Jacksonville Symphony has been doing holiday concerts since the late 80's - that's almost 40 years of holiday performances. After seeing the Holiday Pops concert the other night I can definitely see why it's such a tradition. Add a little culture to your life and buy yourself a ticket! read more

We have been lovers of the Jacksonville Symphony for years. We attend multiple shows per year. They can cover all types of music: rock, classic, jazz, show tunes, and more. Our favorite is when the entire symphony plays along with a movie. We've seen Indiana Jones, Harry Potter, multiple Star Wars movies. Unfortunately that particular program is offline due to Covid restrictions. The Jacksonville Symphony is one of the very few in the nation that is currently performing due to the pandemic. We've a number of recent programs. Every time the visiting singers prodigiously thank the crowd and musicians because they have such limited options to perform live. The crowd is socially distanced and mask wearing is strictly enforced. The one advantage to that is there is nobody sitting directly in front of you. Amazing!!! They were having a free concert and I've never seen a symphony before. Well, I played the flute when I was little for years and was in the school orchestra but never actually went to see the professionals. The first piece they played was so beautiful that I actually got teary-eyed. The concert lasted for 1 hour and I wanted more. They have some really good shows coming up and I can't wait to go back! After seeing this concert I'm thinking of picking up the flute again.. Just typing "symphony" makes me feel all cultured and sophisticated. In my perpetual effort to see and do everything in Jax as a recent transplant, I can now add JSO to my list of experiences. At the urging/mandate of a fellow Jaxonian (Is that a word? It is now!), we attended a performance with guest pianist Joanna Yang. Having concerns about trusting the on-line seating map, I called the Box Office and the super friendly staff helped me select the best seats that were available. This venue has "boxes" that are not really boxes along the walls that offer a great view of the performers and you can listen to the performance without worrying about where speakers are located. I thought it was so cool to watch the performers that close--maybe a little creepy for them though. I found it amusing I could see when the horn players emptied out the spit collection devices. There are lots of parking options and closest food is the Omni hotel. Walk a little further and you also have the Landing. Adult drinks inside the venue are a little pricey and they do sell roasted nuts which smell SO delicious. With the right company (and preferably not having to go to school/work the next day), a evening at the JSO is great way to experience the diversity of activities available in my new home. read more

Every time I hear the Jax Symphony Orchestra I wish I would've devoted 3 hours daily to my violin rather than the measly 30 minutes I practiced. Ah the folly and shortsightedness of youth. Fortunately, the members of the orchestra did not share my apathy. The talent & devotion of the musicians, and the acoustics of the TU Jacoby Hall make for a pretty spectacular sound. We went to a tribute show to Marvin Hamlisch. (Michael Berkowitz, conductor Cady Huffman and Karen Mason, guest vocalists). Program described him as "Truly a singular sensation, Marvin Hamlisch left an unparalleled musical legacy that garnered him virtually every major award and generations of fans that will never forget him." I remember many of his songs from my childhood growing up in the 1970's when Barbara Streisand was on top of her game. Always poignant, ever memorable, these songs are instantly recognizable and were sung so beautifully tonight by the two guest vocalists. For me, it was nostalgia of the best kind ("misty water colored mem'ries of the way we were"). Hearing music live, experiencing a concert with all five senses is incomparable--especially when the musicians are top notch. Jacksonville is fortunate to have this orchestra. I was lucky to have this experience. This concert made for a lovely evening and one I hope to repeat often. read more

The Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra gets five stars for putting on a fantastic Valentine's Day concert with guest cellist Antonio Meneses. I'm no expert on classical music, but I enjoy it and have been to a number of concerts in other cities over the years. This was my first trip to see the JSO. The pieces performed were: FAURE: Pelleas et Melisande: Suite SAINT-SAENS: Cello Concerto No. 1* TCHAIKOVSKY: Rococo Variations* TCHAIKOVSKY: Romeo and Juliet (* with Meneses on cello) I regret that it took me this long to see the JSO perform. But honestly, this season's calendar had a lot of shows, like the music of The Rolling Stones & The Who, or James Bond, that just aren't my style. How much of that falls on musical director and conductor Fabio Mechetti, and how much of that is due to market forces and trying to generate local interest in this often-neglected art form? I can't say for sure, but I fully understand what symphonies must do to survive -- particularly in a recession -- and I don't fault JSO for experimenting. In any case, the orchestra performed beautifully and Meneses, with his intensity, could have started a fire during the cello concerto in A minor. Frankly, they rocked the house. Another plus: Meneses and Mechetti stayed after the show to chat with the audience at the "TalkBack" session. This is a great way to bring musicians and fans together and I hope JSO will continue to do this and more things like it to keep drawing crowds (and less of the music of Styx, for instance). The JSO actually has a lot of cool things going on, if you dig around the website, and can always use more support. So if you've thought about checking out a show, try not to wait as long as I did. As soon as you stepped in here, you will notice the yummy food smell, the candied nuts, popcorn, pretzels, etc. such a shame that they don't allow food or drink in the thearter. So if you want to buy food during the intermission and dont finish it, be ready to throw them away. The staff here are nice, friendly and professional. We went here 2 times and both performance were amazing. The room is spacious and even with the cheapest tickets that we got, we could see the performace and listen to the music really well. read more

I really had fun at the show. We got there a little early since we weren't familiar with the area and parked at a pay parking across the street. As we walked in, there were greeters that direct you. If you get there early enough, you can also do a back stage tour. We opted out, but there were other activities and various booths set up right outside the theatre. Some of which are Symphony Giant Jengga, where if you pull the specially marked block without toppling the blocks, you win. They also had raffles and various orchestra instruments you can play with, like violins, bass, etc. They also have bars where you gat drinks if you want to relax a bit before the show. Anyway, the show started on time and the music was really good. They have shows throughout the year and I'm hoping to come back and see a few of them this year and the next. read more
