When we walked in the first thing I noticed was the smell...now they have said they need to repair the roof and have, or near enough funds, but...should put dehumidifiers/mildew-rid bags, etc all over before shows (my opinion). Next I noticed what a greatly designed stage-really nice and professional! The 5 actors were great...I'd say perfect in their parts, they gave their hearts into the play-Barefoot in the Park. If you need reminded what it was about- young couple facing the challenges of living together with two different types personalities (which is probably is what attracted them to each other) then add in a nosey neighbor, interfering mother and 5/6 flights of stairs and you have humor! read more

My family and I love this little theatre. I have been going on my own or with friends sporadically for several years and have enjoyed every show I've seen. My favorite was probably Pride and Please, but the reading of Peter Pan was amazing. They might be equally my favorite. Once my Spawn started participating in the summer camp a few years ago we are there once a quarter if not more to attend a show or one of my spawn is participating in the show in some way. Over the summer one of us is there daily! We often eat at one of the restaurants near by and make a full day of it. Linner (think brunch, but later), Show, Dessert! Spawn #1 has enjoyed being a camp counselor, stage manager, and helping out in anyway possible for camp, Jr. shows and regular season shows. Spawn #2 has enjoyed 3 sessions of summer camp and participating in a Jr. show. The Education Director, Ron, is amazing. Based on everything I've seen, he truly loves what he does. He cares for the kids and brings so much joy into a room. My Spawn ADORE him. If Rob is involved and my Spawn want to participate I would not hesitate to let them. read more

I had the privilege to attend a show from a friend who was volunteering. As I had not even heard of the show or ever attended the theatre I looked forward to seeing the play as it was about our History. As I walked in everyone was friendly in the lobby.The house it self was a bit narrow but long. The stage set up reminded me that of Hamilton and that excited me. The seats seemed a bit cozy especially for those of us who are a bit larger than usual so I moved to the back a bit. They do offer a concession stand with drinks. The play I could tell took dedication of the ones who took a part as the lines were challenging but it was riveting. I have always been a fan of community theatre and that is why I love Jacksonville and I found the location of this theatre was nice as it was close to a Starbucks and a lot of places to eat. I would defiantly like to return again. read more

I have been this this venue twice this year and enjoyed each visit. I went earlier to see Peter Pan and most recently for Someone Rotten. The theater itself is a little dated but it also helps add to the charm. The worst part is that parking in San Marco is a nightmare. I've tried getting there an hour and a half before the show time and still had trouble finding parking. read more

Community theater at its finest! I had the privelage to volunteer as a Assistant Costume Designer for the Little Mermaid production this past season. I was absolutely amazed at the level of commitment and professionalism everyone brought to the table. The time and dedication it takes to put on such a major production was certainly noticeable, when I got to enjoy the opening night. The music and dancing were phenomenal , and the actor were both talented and funny. I was instantly swept under the sea and taken back to my childhood when watching them all perform on stage... Not to mention how AWESOME, CREATIVE, DRAMATIC, and simply MAGNIFICENT the costumes were. ( Yes I am a little bias here.. But trust me this is no understatement!) I love the location of this theater. It perfectly tucked at the end of San Marco square. (Not to be confused with the San Marco theater.) You can enjoy an nice meal before their plays and a quick cocktail afterward. And everything is in perfect walking distance. I would highly recommend you check out the next play. You would be totally amazed and completely enjoy the night. read more

Great little community theatre, the staff was great and there really is no bad seat overall for a viewing experience. there is no parking so you will need to plan for that aspect for the area businesses has a lot of posted no parking signs around. should note there was no food or drink service. we saw Samuel j Comre and he was awesome!! we would gladly go back to see him or other comedians. read more

This little theater has been operating consistently for, I believe, 97 seasons. Its not the flashiest in the world, but they perform solid productions with gorgeous sets and their cast is always on point by opening night. We recently saw "the God Game" here and despite the 3-member cast, it was a timely production, culturally relevant, and riveting. I don't know if it's worth the ticket price, but I did appreciate the cleanliness of the theatre and the polite demeanor of the all-volunteer staff. This is definitely a "support local" kind of place, and if they have a show you're interested in, you should give it a chance. They really put their heart into these performances and the theatre is assuredly a historic piece of Jacksonville. read more

Attended my first show here which was the Mad Cowford Improv. This is quite the neat, little theatre in San Marco. The show itself was great and I think that this place would be the perfect venue for their act instead of downtown. Parking can be a challenge but if you get there early enough you should be able to get relatively close to the venue. read more

I attended my first show at Theatre Jacksonville today, watching Sondheim's "Into The Woods". Theatre Jacksonville is one of the oldest community theatres, founded in 1919. It is a volunteer based community theatre. The theater itself seats around 300 people. The building is on the National Register for Historic Places. It is very charming. The cast for "Into the Woods" was terrific. Standout performances from Chris Robertson (Jack) and Staci Cobb (Baker's wife). I could not believe Jack is a junior in high school! Staci's performance was touching and compelling. Great talent right here in our city. I highly recommend taking in a show at Theatre Jacksonville. Tickets were $25 a pop. Great deal for a professional and entertaining performance!! read more

People of all ages poured out of Theatre Jax tonight buzzing about "The Miracle Worker" play and its teenage star: Libby Kellmanson as blind/deaf wild child Helen Keller. "When I read that play, I didn't realize, it's funny!" said an elderly woman, while the mothers and daughters chatting behind us said: "Imagine having a child who's mentally perfect and physically so disabled. I never got it before." In addition to a talented volunteer cast, Theatre Jax made the show interactive with the hashtag #MiracleWorkerJax, a sign language alphabet in the lobby, and partnerships with the Jacksonville Speech & Hearing Center. They created a wonderful show beyond the stage and into the community. I love it. read more

Great little place in San Marco that has been open for 90 plus years. Excellent, no frills service that attracts a wide variety of acts and troupes from around the world. Plenty of places to grab a bite before or after a performance makes this a one stop location for a great afternoon out or an evening date. As an aside, the restrooms were out of order but they had the CLEANEST & most MODERN port -o- potties I'd ever seen. Almost worth heading over there just to try them out! read more

First visit to this venue last night to see Santaland Diaries. One man, one act play starring Ian Mairs. Great performance. Very funny. I'll never look at department store elves in the same way. Not that I've paid much attention to them before... This was my first one act play. Gotta say I love it. I'm out in an hour. Like a mini play. If it's a good play like this one, it's over on a high. If it's a slow performance, it'll be over in time for a drink. read more

This is not a big typical theater. It is a small community theater with great, attentive staff. There are food places surrounding the theater but not much inside the theater itself. There are restrictions on food that you can bring inside so finish the food before going in. Parking is also an issue. There are only street parking so be prepare to walk. read more

A very well-established community playhouse celebrating its 90th year, at the time of this writing. I've seen at least 10 different plays and musicals here and they've all been quite good -- nothing too 'challenging' in terms of subject matter, just good old-fashioned pure entertainment. They pay particular attention to the staging and costumes and have production values a few notches above some of the other playhouses in Jacksonville. Being in San Marco, you can easily enjoy a pre-theater dinner at a local place before walking down to the performance, or stick around for drinks and dessert afterward. read more
