After years of seeing the billboard on the drive between Minneapolis and Fargo, I decided to stop and was I happy I did! In the heart of Osakis on a adorable lined street you will find this Bakeri. They have a fridge full of lefse and it is a MUST! I bought 7 packages for myself and family and every single one of us agreed it was the best we had ever had. One might argue it rivals the fresh off the griddle lefse we make every christmas. The shop is filled with other Minnesota and Norwegian finds. Anything from sweatshirts to cooking materials there are lots of finds. They have some other bakery items but I didn't purchase them. They also offer lefse to buy that they will butter or fill with other fillings for you if you don't feel up to buying a whole pack. read more

Wow!! I have not had Lefse in years this was such a wonderful treat to find! The service here is unmatched, the woman working was so very sweet and kind! The Lefse was SO delicious, I of course got some to bring with me and also found an Uffda sweatshirt! I love lefse rolled with butter and sugar. It tastes better microwaved for 10 seconds. I stopped here briefly and purchased 4 packs if lefse for $23. This probably is not the cheapest but lefse making is a lot of work. It involves boiling potatoes, ricing them, making a dough, thinly rolling it out then frying on a lefse griddle. Lefse! What's that you say? You don't know what lefse is? You're obviously not from around here. That's ok, we'll have you saying "Uff Da" soon enough. Lefse is basically just a thin mashed potato pancake. It IS and you can't tell me it's not. It's the toppings that make lefse special. We'll get to that. It's apparently the Scandinavian answer to tortillas and crepes. So, the store is on the main drag in Osakis and is FULL of decorative items and Scandinavian gifts. They have some lovely things, they do, but I go solely for lefse. Just go straight to the counter in back and ask for some lefse. They usually have both fresh and frozen and they are both equally acceptable depending on your plans. If you're eating them today, get fresh, duh. If you're planning to freeze them anyway, get frozen. Jacobs has HANDS DOWN the best lefse in the area. So, once you get home, this is where the fun, and controversy starts. You can pretty much do anything you want with your thin potato pancake. You could use it as a wrap, make cinnamon sugar chips out of it, make little party pinwheels, etc. Basically anything you can do with a tortilla you can do with lefse. HOWEVER. Some might accuse many of those things as blasphemy. At least in my family, there is only one correct way to eat your lefse. Quartered, warmed, buttered, with cinnamon and brown sugar, rolled into a cigar shape and served with your meal like a quasi dessert cause it's sweet but since it's with dinner, it's considered part of the meal, like the dinner roll. It does not replace the dinner roll, it's in addition to the dinner roll. If it happens to be a holiday, your lefse makes an excellent fork-pusher-onner, especially for cranberries or sweet potatoes. Yum. I will admit we've dabbled in slight variations on the one correct way to eat your lefse - honey, white sugar, peanut butter - and they're all just ok. Just humor me and eat it the proper way (read: my way) once, and then you can do it however you want after that. Be sure to stop here if you're coming through town or happen to be here anyway. There's a few other destinations in town, like Grandma's (not my Grandma's. I mean, she lives here, but there's a collection of shops called Grandma's that are full of gifty things) and the new distillery, so you can make a whole afternoon out of Osakis! The gift shop is pretty routine, but the lefse is as good as you'll find unless you make it yourself (or cajole Auntie into doing it).

Do not order from this place. Didn't get my lefsa when I was supposed to. They hung up on me both times I tried to call to resolve the problem. Very poor business. read more
