Be warned! Jacobson's gun center is putting sales tax on service and transfer fees and shipping which is illegal in the state of Iowa. Not only did they charge me an astronomical price to send back a firearm that I only had for 3 days back for factory warranty they actually added sales tax! They weren't happy when I confronted them about this. So people check your receipts they're receiving sales tax for things they have not sold! read more

Drove from Coralville to Story City to pickup a firearm. Very happy with the store and its great selection from my observation. Very clean and organized. Location was also easy to get to and Story City is neat little town. Paul greeted me and thanked me for my military service (he is also a veteran). His price for the item I purchased was more than fair. Paul also inquired how my longer drive was and was genuinely nice and made me feel like a valued customer. I would definitely go back to the store and puchase from Jacobson Gun in the future. His store is far better than the Johnson County gun dealers I am used to. Worst service imaginable. A piece of the rear sight had broken on my deer rifle and I wanted it fixed. A seemingly simple task so I brought it to their "gunsmith". I waited two weeks and called multiple times and they never called me back. They never called to let me know it was done. Eventually I went in and found out it was done. They then raped me to the tune of $218 for this. I asked what the hourly rate was and they said $100 an hour. People who work on the space station dont get paid $100 an hour. I've had gunsmiths do more complicated tasks than this for almost nothing. They then informed me that they didnt replace the rear sight with the one I had asked for but with a smaller one without informing me so that now my gun "might shoot a bit low." The shop has some interesting pieces for sale but the staff are totally worthless. read more

Wouldn't recommend going there.I live 70 miles away and stop when in the area.Last two times I have been there are like the other times I have stopped over the years but more disappointing.Recently each time I have asked the counter person in the shop about an item for sale they don't have it priced and have to "look on the internet" to price it.I also had two boxes of ammo I was going to buy but when I got the reply of "look on the internet"I put the ammo back and left.If I want to pay internet or shop on the internet I will save my self time and money and shop from home. My prior visit in there they asked me what something was worth as they had it on gunbroker and it didn't sell.I cant price it and also buy it. Guess they forgot the first rule of business...Don't loose a sale no matter how minor it may be.Save your self time and money and shop on the internet or go to Walmart,Shields,Bass Pro or order on line from Palmetto Arms or Brownells and get the free shipping. A nationally famous gun shop right here in central Iowa. Visiting this store is like a history lesson on firearms. They've got a little bit of everything here. Very knowledgeable staff that takes their time to explain the how and why behind rifles, shotguns and hand-guns. With very few gun stores around anymore I found my visit to Jacobsen's fascinating. Their prices are high, but with guns as an investment I would prefer to have the insight and expertise of these guys nearby for care, maintenance and repair. read more

I believe in supporting local businesses, so the fact that they were more expensive didn't bother me. In doing so though, I kind of expect better customer service than I would get at the bigger box stores. They didn't have the gun I wanted in stock so they had to order it, which isn't that big of a deal. What bothers me is that I was told one to two weeks before they would get it in. Well two weeks later I stop in because I haddn't heard from them yet. Was told that it didn't come in with the latest shipment and that it might be on the next one. They didn't offer to look into it or say that they would make sure that would be with the next order, or even tell me when the next shipment would be in. They acted like they could care less. This will be my first and last purchase with them unless they start acting like they actually care out my business. read more

These guys have a good selection, and generally speaking a knowledgeable staff, however you should be prepared to pay a premium on new and used guns alike. Every other gun shop around (ames,ankeny, des moines) all carry the same guns for less money. that's the bottom line for me. read more
