Karaoke is fun even when the venue and technology are not optimal. I am glad Jaguar is open for business, and our group of eleven had a great time for the two hours we rented a room. The management is friendly and helpful, and the establishment was clean and seemed well-maintained. So far, so good. What is lacking is up-to-date technology to optimize the karaoke choices and experience available to users. When you check in at the front desk you get a choice: either use their (aging) professional karaoke system or just cast YouTube videos to their TV screens. The problem with the former is that the English song list is thin and increasingly out of date (I can't judge the choices in Korean). One can arrive with a list of songs to sing, only to find that maybe a third or them are actually included within their system. The other choice reflects the overall trend within the Karaoke world, i.e., that people just stream YouTube karaoke videos, of which there are an abundance. This could be ideal but for the fact that with the technology Jaguar offers, you cannot change the pitch/key of the videos to suit your own vocal range. At home, I can do this by adding the Transpose extension to the Chrome web browser installed on my laptop computer. This allows one to change pitch and speed easily. However, the people at Jaguar told us that only the YouTube mobile app can be used with their system, and this version of YouTube does not allow pitch changes. One would think one could use ApplePlay or Chromecast to cast the YouTube computer website content to their TVs, but apparently their system does not allow this, and that is a big minus in my estimation. Jaguar is a fun place and the prices are reasonable. But their actual system(s) for facilitating karaoke are outdated and need an overhaul. Exactly what I was hoping for! Thanks to Yelp Community, I had an exact understanding of what Jaguar Karaoke offers and was able to match my needs to their offering. I've honestly never been to a Karoake bar or lounge before, so I have nothing to compare it to. But I give Jaguar 5 stars bc it met our needs and was an exact match with the service offering. My teen wanted karaoke with her friends for her 16th birthday, and obviously they cannot go in a place that serves alcohol or requires 21+. Jaguar Karaoke Oakland is clean, centrally located for our guests, and allowed us to bring in pizza, sodas and snacks, and our own cake that my daughter baked. (So much better --and cheaper than if we were forced to chose from a restaurant menu.) The teens managed the tech part, and I had advised her in advance to download karaoke song versions to her yelp app on the phone. The aesthetic is sort of neon/blade runner but in a kinda cool way. This is not posh, but it was fun. The room was a little warm but there was a fan on the ceiling. The rooms were not sound proof but they never noticed when they were singing. And again, it was CLEAN. The staff member at the front was really nice and helpful. The pricing is relatively reasonably considering that this is one of the only options in this area. However, the rooms have no ventilation whatsoever and the AC wasn't really working, so it was extremely hot in there the whole time. The machine is super old and a pain to navigate, so you end up switching to YouTube as your best bet. At that point, you're just paying for a space and some low grade microphone, so plan accordingly. It was fun though and there's plenty of good Korean food nearby - so might be down to come back when it's not too hot. read more

I would go back just for the hospitality of the owner! He is very attentive, providing water, napkins, song selection help, while also giving the privacy to belt out songs. Right off of Macarthur station and close to many food gems, Jaguar Karaoke is perfect for a fun night out. We came here after eating at Homeroom, and reserved an hour the day before. An hour was not enough, as the song selection was vast and filled with old music from every genre. There is also new music you can play by connecting to Youtube, we didn't figure that out till the end. Next time we will be back, and we'll be sure to reserve 2 hours of music. Sad experience tonight. He didn't even give instructions or anything, just gave me the remote and mics. For 5 min we tried to figure it out and then asked for help. He said he would come, he came 2 minutes and then helped us. *The website said they had a Google cast thing to help with updated songs but it wasn't available. So there was only song list is up to 2017 but still scarce. *Overcharged, we started at 8pm and he charged me $50 bc it was 9:08pm. And then he said bc you guys are 15 minutes later it was 9:08pm & there was no post saying we will be charged 1 dollar per late minute! He should have explained it beforehand. Challenging bc he didn't speak much english though he was really nice. I just felt played bc I couldn't explain my complaint. I have been here twice, and I like this place. My companion complained that the music selection was limited, but I didn't find it any different than most karaoke places. The gentleman who was working that evening was kind and patient when asked a bunch of questions. I thought the guy was sweet, courteous, hardworking, and polite! The pages of the karaoke music book are sticky, so you might want to bring disinfectant wipes/hand spray. Parking is limited, and a security guard told us to leave the back windows of my car halfway down so potential thieves can see that there is nothing to steal/ have less of an incentive to break the car windows. First, I love coming here because the owner is always so sweet. He is so accommodating even when I bring a big group of friends. I'll tell you as much as I can remember about my experience about karaoke. The first thing - the private rooms are awesome. I HATE doing karaoke in front of strangers. There's nothing like making a fool of yourself with your friends. We crammed about 15 people in a tiny ass room. You're not "allowed" to have alcohol and they will patrol to enforce this, but where there's a will there's a way. The machinery cracks me up. I just remember Coolio's Gangster's paradise playing with country scenery (sheep and farms) in the background. I totally recommend this place. Grab a bunch of your closest friends, pre-party at a local bar and head to Jaguar. You'll have a blast. If you don't - your friends are lame. read more
