We love the idea of tapas at the beach. We are a party of 6. Our server started out okay, other than apologizing for forgetting her shoes as she rushed to work. That was not an issue but the service fell off from there. She said she was bringing clean plates for the pallela but forgot, I guess. She also forgot 2 beers we ordered and the omelette dish. The food we did have was actually good. Then she brought napkins for our churros and 25 minutes later our churros never came. I went inside to pay. Our server was sitting and eating dinner. I asked about our missing items, especially the churros, my favorite dessert and she said the kitchen forgot. She didn't seem to care but I am still really unhappy. I travelled 17 hour by airplane to enjoy this meal (just arrived from San Diego, California) and this was a disaster! read more

If you're looking for a comfortable and beachy bar which offers a cool place to sit and enjoy the sea breeze.. look no further. Located on the main strip of restaurants and shops on The Strand, is the little sister of Jah Bar in Manly. Jah Bar in Dee Why is across the road from Dee Why Beach. My friend recently moved to Dee Why and Jah Bar is her new regular. Jah Bar serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. The wine list is ample and they have a good cocktail list too. We tried the fish tacos, salt & pepper squid, croquetas and patatas bravas. The fish tacos were the star dish with a crisp taco shell that delicately held the kingfish. The flavours were fresh and delicious. Since my visit to Jah Bar I have learned that their food is sourced locally (oh yeah, looking after our local farmers) and all seafood is fully sustainable. Big tick of approval here. It's so important to source sustainable seafood and buy produce from local sources where possible. My friend shouted lunch (thanks babe) so I can't comment on the final bill but plates start at $12 each and the most expensive is $20. In summary a nice place to stop for a drink or have a meal. Will be heading back to Jah Bar after a swim at Dee Why Beach for a refreshing cocktail and fish tacos. read more

To sum up - pretty good tapas, lovely wines by the glass and dreadfully slow/spotty customer service. My friend and I came here on a Saturday afternoon and sat out the front, at a table yet to be cleaned. We proceeded to wait...and wait...and wait. There were other people sitting out the front. But where were the staff? Eventually a few came out with drinks and yet none made eye contact or engaged us. Eventually another staff member came out and we managed to flag her/make eye contact. She turned out be a lovely young British woman with a charming London accent. I immediately felt less annoyed. She said she would clean the table up and also brought us menus, cutlery and water. And then...nothing. No one came to see us for another 20 minutes. I got fed up and went inside to find the woman. 'Oh, your waiter has not come?' she asked, apparently surprised. Well, no! Seems she finally got the ball rolling and someone came to take our order. We got the potatos bravas, cauliflower tahini salad, meatballs and fish tacos (the latter two were for my non-vego friend). I ordered a glass of the Argentinian malbec (the second one of the two on the menu is the recommended one) and my friend got the Kimi sav blanc from Marlborough, NZ (but of course). The food and wine came out in reasonable time. So did an order of the mushrooms (which we definitely didn't order). I was going to send them back but my friend wanted to keep them as she had been debating on this dish, and so we did. My friend absolutely loved the fish tacos and her wine. She even declared they were both the best she'd ever had, and she took note of the wine. I really enjoyed the wine as well as the potatoes, cauliflower and randomly appearing mushrooms. The cauliflower could have been slightly crispier but the tahini dressing was nice. Although the staff were all friendly and asked us if we liked our meals they didn't engage us too much further. They cleared our plates and let us be without asking if we wanted another drink or anything. We wouldn't have ordered one (but that is not the point, is it?). Eventually a staff member I had not seen came over and politely advised us that he had a reservation on this table and the party had arrived. He wanted us to slide down to a smaller table. I said we were planning on leaving and could we get the bill. He told us we needed to go and pay inside (no one had mentioned this before). We went inside and paid with the lovely barman (formerly of InSitu). It came to around $90 for everything. Happy with everything we ate but the service really let them down. Fortunately for them we were catching up and had plenty to talk about. The whole thing took about 3 hours - had I of been hangry or in more of a hurry I would have been irate. The original Manly location has the same menu but much prompter service. I'm told the old owners of InSitu and a few other staff work here now - perhaps they will raise the bar. read more

Valentines day a friend and I decided to grab dinner at a place we hadn't been before.... To my surprise we had this little lady give us probably the most "real" service I've ever had! She was funny with the right amount of sass. Because of Francesca I will certainly be coming back with friends. Not to mention the amazing food! We where seated at the bar watching the food being made and watching the chef glide through his food was just incredible. Amazing atmosphere 10/10 read more

My family and I decided to celebrate my birthday by coming to this restaurant located in dee why. I was looking forward to eating some traditional Spanish tapas food however I was deeply and utterly disappointed. If you decide to go to this restaurant you MUST be prepared. So please bring: Number 1 - Pack your own water bottle because you won't be receiving any water refills. Number 2- Head torch. The place is so dark it's like your eating in a cave. Even my grandmother looked 20 years younger! This leads me to the next important item to bring... a hazard vest. Remember if your headed for the bathroom/ put your hazard vest on! I almost got bowled over my a waitress on a mission juggling hot plates. Number 3- Extra food unless your happy to wait 40 minutes between each dish and you eat proportion sizes that are so small- you could give it to an ant and it'd still ask for more. All in all, you really cant complain about the service.... BECAUSE THERE WASN'T ANY! Finally, if you children don't afppreciate your food, take them to this restraunt and they'll be dying to go home to your well lit dinner table with fast served home-cook meals!!! read more

Beyond disappointed! Went this evening to give it another go after they totally stuffed up our meal a few months ago. They did however butter us up with a voucher to spend and a discount card. Both of which we tried to use this evening, and only to be advised they can't not be used together. Yet neither stipulate this on the card or voucher. Please explain this one. The meat sizes have shrunk and are a dismal size for the price. Particularly the "lamb shoulder" for $30 that comes two little blobs no bigger then a cupcake and the kingfish ceviche for $22 that is no joke 5 thin slices. I really don't understand how they get repeat business after what we experienced tonight. This all highlights that the service could definitely be improved. Attended a birthday celebration here over the weekend with about 12 people. After a stuff-up with the reservation (it went to their Manly location), the staff were attentive at accommodating us on the busy Saturday afternoon. The views of Dee Why beach are awesome and the seating is comfortable. The vibe is super chill and the staff are friendly. Unfort. the rest of the experience was relatively sub-par. The service was slow and it felt as if the staff didn't care. No water for the table, and it took a while for drink orders to happen so I approached the bar after half an hour only to be informed that the orders are taken at the table. C'mon! The prices are waaaay too inflated for what you get. The $22 flatbread pizza was smaller than my hand and was basically all cheese with a couple lumps of shredded pork. The fish tacos I ordered never arrived. (A burrito from up the street after leaving satisfied my stomach). You guys are sitting on a gold-mine there at that location. If the staff gave two shits and provided attentive service with prices that reflect the portions or vice-versa, I'd be back with my crew repeatedly. Unfortunately it's probably one of those cases of not needing to provide good service as they know there will always be clientele walking in off the beach on any day. read more

The food is good, but not great. I have been here a couple of times. A word of warning, we the place is full, you have a long wait for everything. We usually drop down just after lunch, or pre dinner rush. The tapas are always tasty, the main meals are okay. Seating out the front is best, grab a drink, tapas and some friends and you can watch dee why stroll past. Well worth the visit on a sunny Sunday or Saturday afternoon. read more

Where to start Only two waiters were on, both have no conception of service or efficiency, had to ask multiple times for service and water, eventually gave up on waiting for our table to be cleared even though she came to our table multiple times to give us our plates, eventually just moved it myself onto another table. The food is extremely over priced for the serving size, we were told that the pizza is a main even though I could feed to an ant and it would still ask for more!! Waited 30 mins for our first dish with 20-40 mins intervals for the other dishes to arrive to our table although tables around us received their food before us even though arriving 30 mins after us, we had to apply multiple bowls of hot sauce in order to give our food any amount of flavour. Although prices range from $12-$20 your serving size is that of an infant child and you're forced to order 6 dishes to fulfil an average persons appetite along with the fact that we waited an hour and a half for an $18 dish that I could barely fit in my hand and much like the other dishes on our table lacked flavour and spice, we eventually spoke to the manager/chef and found that they were playing games in the kitchen (no wonder our food took a century to reach our table) Although I can't complain about the view as it is right in front of the beach!! I do recommend the breakfast burrito as it is a proper serving size and comes with a coffee of your choice, the general atmosphere of the bar is comfortable and appears to be the only pro in sea of cons. If you're looking for a lovely Tapas bar and aren't afraid to spend a little more I recommend catching the next flight to Barcelona and walking 100 meters in any direction, perhaps your experience will be better than that provided by Jah Bar. read more
