Came here because this is another restaurant that my friend recommended. I want know if this was recommended based of their scenery or the food itself? Because I don't believe it was the latter. When we first came down, no one was at the front desk. Stood there for 10 minutes and nothing. Finally the bartender came out from the bar to seat us and finally spotted the host who was busy chatting it up with the customers. I get you have to be personable and etc, but not if you're the only person in the FOH. There should be at least 2 people in the FOH, but if you have one person, be sure to cut the small talk and be back to seat your other guests. We sat outside and nice view, but not breathtaking. Got the following items: Don Javier | El Tequileno Reposado Tequila, salted cola, verjus, angostura bitters I want to say this is the first place that actually made me a proper cocktail here in the land where they're not known for cocktails. I don't drink beer and I don't like to drink wine because it makes me sleepy and I want someone to actually make me a drink rather than just opening it. This drink deserves 5 stars and standing ovation for the bartender who actually knows how to make cocktails. Rock oysters | Michelada, guajillo oil - these oysters were super briny and putting the sauces didn't help cut the taste. I ended up squeezing more lime and that helped tremendously. Queso Fundido - Melted cheeses, WA lobster, sweetcorn esquites, salsa locajete, flour tortilla | This was okay, it didn't blow me away even with the lobster meat. Skirt steak, pickled nopales, queso fresco, salsa arbol (GF) | Okay steak was overdone, super dry and tasteless. Fried chicken, pickles, kale slaw, chipotle tomatillo salsa | Chicken wasn't dry so that's good, but where's the flavour? After that, there was a super long wait, about 20 minutes before we got the below items. I was about to drop dead on the table because I was super tired and this dinner was longer than expected due to the lateness of the food and not to mention the lateness on seating us. "Chorizo y papas" potato gnocchi, chorizo ragù, pico di gallo, brown butter crema | Okay, didn't care for their version of gnocci - it literally resembled our side dish that A decided to order. It didn't even look like a gnocchi. I said to A, why did you get a potato gnocchi and a side of sweet potato? Didn't even taste like a gnocchi - basically just eating a regular potato. Sweet Potato, pomegranate, chile arbol miso, lemon myrtle, sesame This reminded me of something I had in Asia, which a good thing - nostalgic in way, but I was like I got two potato dish. Wow wow wow! TLDR; the view and the food are amazing. Was brought here for a Sunday lunch with a friend and was absolutely stunned. We got a table outside (def recommend!) and ordered cocktails and plates to share. The chicken sliders and roasted corn plates were mouthwatering. But the best in my opinion was the cured salmon. It was so light and fresh and done absolutely beautifully. Def come here on a beautiful day and try to snag a spot out on the deck to enjoy the view of Sydney. read more

I can't for the life of me sort out why the Yelpy consensus of The Butler is as mediocre as it is. This place has solid service, an almost unmatchable atmosphere and view, and does a great job executing a wide range of dishes across a broad menu. Star 1: How were the service and atmosphere? What is there to say about the view at The Butler really? It's exceptional. A full skyline framed by greenery and complimented by a sort of almost tiki bar vibe that's cozy enough for a drink or two while being equally effective for larger dinners. Our many dishes cycled in quickly and in all we were well taken care of. Star. Star 2: How were the portions relative to the cost? The Butler's portion sizes vary notably based on what you're ordering, but in total our party of three were absolutely stuffed for only about $80.00 AUD per person including several drinks, which was good value. Star. Stars 3 and 4: How was the food? There wasn't a bad dish amidst the many that we ordered, but in my mind the smaller individual dishes like the tacos and chicken sliders shined a bit brighter than the wagyu beef or the carnitas. The Butler is a perfect drink or meal stop after climbing Butler Stairs or just after the other six miles you've walked exploring the city that day. It's a really great and happening vibe when you get downstairs--it's open and bright, and full of greenery and flowers. The menu has items to share, big and small. The stars of the show are the cocktails and I recommend the cracker jack--so good. The food was definitely shareable and relatively instagramable too. Considering I found this place on instagram, the comment stands. It's also pretty good for groups with big longs tables and carafes of rosè sangria. Get there before sundown. The views are great even when cloudy. Make sure to sit outside and order the following: Get the corn! It comes with 4 small but tasty pieces. Get an old fashioned cocktail. They are very generous with the pour. The tacos are a MUST except the tortilla to meat ratio is a bit off. Request more tortillas. If you feel rushed, it's because you are expected to eat, drink and pay within 2hrs. That should be enough of your entire party is there on time. One of the servers dropped a full glass bottle of water near our feet and was really concerned for our safety. But we were all ok. read more

Picture a luxe tropical cabana with lazily turning fans and palm fronds and a British India in the days of the Raj kinda vibe and you're still nowhere near the kinda jive you get playing rancho relaxo in this little slice of great-to-hang-out-in. The menu is pretty good - try the sliders - and the drinks are creative and delicious and you're probably gonna wanna jump straight into the cocktails, which is never a terrible idea. Feels super high class when you're here. View is nice but there are better views in the area. Patio is nice but the 3 times I've been here each time is has been closed off, bit annoying. Kind of a stuffy vibe- people like to celebrate birthdays here when they want something nice, chilled, and sophisticated. The food is good but expensive and I don't think quite worth the money. Small portions, fancy descriptions, but the food is not that memorable and amazing. I don't regret coming here but I wouldn't recommend it. It's seriously whatever. read more

A local took me to this restaurant. If you don't know it, you would just pass the entrance. But then going inside it is a huge restaurant with an awesome view of Sydney's skyline. Our Italian waitress gave us several recommendations on food and drinks. Everything was delicious -or as you say in Australia ''beautiful''. I've been in Sydney a week and done a number of solo dinners - this was my best overall experience. A combination of the food, the cocktails but mostly the two bartenders downstairs where I sat. I had the beef taco, the chicken slider and the cauliflower. And for cocktails I tried the please and thank you, the Ivy League and the toasted coconut espresso martini for dessert (don't judge). Yum. The bartender ran were engaging, talkative and fun - more so than any place I've been. They made the experience. So try it out and sit at the bar. Booked a reservation for an anniversary and heard amazing reviews. On arrival was not greeted by anyone, instead I awaited the attention of 2 female hostesses who were too busy chatting amongst each other before helping myself to the outdoor area at the back where my partner was seated. Ordered drinks and the expresso martini was amazing, hence the 1 Star, but that was the end of a great anticipated night. Kingfish ceviche shared plate small, was not fresh (tainted fish taste) and as a ceviche the chef should know how to fillet the fish better and not include the BLOODLINE! Oysters were standard natural, for 4.50 a pop i wasn't wowed at all, not like they were NZ Bluff Oysters. Octopus shared plate very very rubbery and lacked a-lot of flavour. All in all, disappointed is an understatement, waitress didn't pour any water or wine and hinted a tip at the end of service! Butler was referred to by my partner who fined there 2 weeks prior, but after our experience we will not be returning. read more

A friend had an intimate boozy hen's lunch booked here and it was the perfect atmosphere: great views over the city, with massively high ceilings, murals of palm trees on the walls, stylish high bar tables and booths with stylish people to go in them. A fab soundtrack of inspired funk and soul livened up the playful sleekness. Normally a swank place like this has overpriced food and it's hit or miss as to whether it's good or not. Unfortunately, the Butler falls into the latter. We ordered quite a variety of dishes and everything bizarrely managed to taste exactly the same. From the cod croquettes to the tuna carpaccio on crispy tortilla to the lamb ribs to the (nicely cooked) pork belly, they all had the same sort of dukkah-inspired spice profile which was sickly after the 2nd dish. Grilled octopus with white beans was nearly tasteless and just plain wrong, crumbed shiitake mushrooms overly tough and weirdly sweet, the prawns in quinoa good but extremely buttery, tasting nothing like the coconut mango flavour profile promised. The desserts also had strange elements: hazelnut chocolate mousse came adorned with sultanas in too-sweet syrup, and the custard with mixed berries, coulis and honeycomb had weird bits of unwanted jelly. Staff were friendly and attentive with sexy hipster barmen making dainty cocktail after dainty cocktail. It's an awesome enough atmosphere that I would go back for a few casual drinks and some bread, olives and chips in a late afternoon, lounging on the balcony, taking in the city views. Certainly not the standard view you get in an inner city venue, which is nice for a change. The decor is akin to a swanky beach shack; bright and airy. Despite being hungry and looking for a meal, I didn't order anything off the menu. Nothing jumped out in that stand out "gotta have it" way and as a vegetarian, the options were limited, if not sparse. Hmmm we went here with a friend for her to do a review. Suffice to say we got the best seats in the house, except they forgot to mention that as the view got more amazing as the sun went down across the city outline, the mozzies also got hungrier and you are dinner. We got quite a few dishes from here to try out nearly everything we could to share. There's quite a few dishes that have Creole in them that made my heart sing a bit, however upon putting them into my mouth they lacked that good ole southern taste. I was wishing it would teleport me back to New Orleans for flavour, but it didn't. So I got the sads. The other dishes weren't that huge a deal either. We had the lamb ribs which were high in fat content and not much meat content. This also made me a bit sad. On the bright side their cocktail menu is delish!! They even have pictures of the cups your choice of cocktail will come in. My dinner companion and I were delighted! Finally, you get to choose what cup you want! The cocktails were a hit. We tried quite a few, unlike the food you definitely get what you want and then some. If you go here definitely try the smaller slider dishes to go with your cocktails. Bigger food items I'd really not go back to try to be honest. Which is a bit disappointing because it's somewhat affordable grub but the flavours just aren't there for me. read more

The venue is classy and has a very nice patio, but the food was average at best. The portions were ridiculously small, especially if they encourage people to share. I went with a party of 5; we had to order around 8 dishes and still left semi-hungry. Extremely overpriced for the small dishes. I had lunch at The Butler this week to catch up with a long lost girlfriend, who happens to live in the area. She chose this restaurant, and I have to say I was blown away by the meal, the serving staff, the Sydney city / park views and the atmosphere generally. I would highly recommend this venue for tourists and Sydneyites alike. I had he swordfish with artichokes and gnocchi (absolutely heavenly) and my friend had the seared tuna on a bed of chick peas and yogurt, which she also loved - and she's a health fanatic too. Cost per meal was just under $30 + wine / coffee and whatever else takes your fancy. I would go back there - over and over and slowly make my way through their menu, while taking in the atmosphere and the amaizing Sydney views. They also serve a not too shabby coffee too. How rare is that?! The service was attentive, friendly and not intrusive - and I dare you to find an ordinary looking server - all lovely and easy on the eye. What's not to like. Try The Butler. I loved everything about this restaurant! I had dinner at this restaurant with 3 other friends while visiting Sydney, based on a local's recommendation. The restaurant had a beautiful view of the city skyline. I sat inside as the night time was quite chilly when I visited. However, had the weather been warmer, I would have loved to sit on the patio. We shared several dishes between the four of us, and I thought everything was very yummy. There were lots of cocktails to choose from, and the one I tried was amazing. The service was also very good, and our waiter was very attentive, from explaining the specials of the day to us at the start of dinner, to answering any questions we had, to checking on us throughout the night. I also loved the atmosphere at the restaurant, and think that this is a great place to hand out with friends over drinks and catch up! read more

This was our second time here for a birthday celebration. We should have learned the first time but we gave the benefit of the doubt. We've been here before as a couple in the early days and it was great. And now twice as a group. And let down on both occasions. It seems the chefs cannot forecast food. For a 7pm booking there were two oysters left after "a busy lunch." This happened the last time. The dish we came here for (the tuna) they were also out of. As an apology we were told that they would offer us each a desert. We were looking at the menu and were politely told it was handled. That they would take care of it. So they brought out two brownies with ice cream. For 7 people. I don't mean to sound ungrateful but, it just seemed rather token and not very customer centric. It seems So Cal is the only restaurant in this outfit that can stand tall. Between the botanist and this place, there seems to a pretty lame north shore approach to dining and customer service. My advice, go to cho cho San or the Apollo. You will get a much more well rounded dining experience, and a much better food and wine list for a comparable price. This is the perfect spot to hang out with some girlfriends and drink a couple of cocktails and enjoy the fresh air flowing through the doors. The food is great and the customer service is attentive. We stayed at the B&B Albert & Victorias Court across the street. Our host recommended the Butler to us and we promptly made a reservation. What a HUGE disappointment. We arrived promptly at 6 PM on a Tuesday evening. The restaurant was completely vacant. We were seated under a speaker where the music was so blaring, conversation with the person seated next to you was impossible. We explained that the 2 gentlemen in our group suffered from hearing problems and asked if it was possible to turn down the music. We were informed that "their customer's preferred it that way". OK, we said, is it possible to be moved to an area that was not located directly under the speakers. No. we were told, the restaurant was completed booked. We glanced around at the empty restaurant and couldn't understand why our request wasn't met. The menu looked very interesting, and we were eager to experience it. We also appreciate really good wines, and their wine list was extensive. Unfortunately because they were so unaccomodating to us, we felt unwelcome, and disinclined to spend our money there. Please note that the charge is $55 per person to share a plate, add to that, a few bottles of wine, and you have a cost of approx. $150 per person, which is a fair charge for what we perceived the experience would cost us. Apparently the restaurant (did I mention that we were the only ones there) did not need our support. Due to their inflexibility and quite frankly, rudeness , we left the restaurant and found a fabulous restaurant around the corner where we were greeted with open arms and enjoyed an incrediable meal. So, my advice is, avoid this restaurant is you have any intention of enjoying the company you are with as you will be completely unable to hear each other speak. read more
