There's one man holding up the fort in the middle by the cash register, and a woman making sushi and other prepared foods behind this pretty open concept glass display. Prices are a bit on the higher side, and since I'd been craving sushi, I got a set of large sashimi rolls for $9. They were ok, but for a grocery store they hit the spot. This is the second Korean grocery store I've found in Montreal. The other being on St Catherine W downtown. This one was larger and selection of good was more diverse. I was here on a Sunday so I could do is salivate while looking at the menu and wonder how amazing their dishes must be. Some prepared bulgogi rice was made but I want to come for some of the more exotic Korean items. In the cooler at entrance there is a well stocked selection of prepared Korean food. Spicy chicken, kimchi, tempura fish, chap chae only to name a few. I got some chap chae and it was delicious. Not too sesame oil overpowering but delicious none the less! As you walk to the back there is another cooler fridge of banchan and other curious delights. Good stuff peeps especially if K-Food is one of your weaknesses. This is due to the advent of mass grocery and Costco have taken over the lions share of the meat business. Offerings here are fresh cut (aged) meat. Loads of local bottled and canned products. A small selection of fresh dairy products and what I come for the cured saucisson. Last year I spent the month of June in France and developed a semi-addiction to cured saucisson. I'm not proud of it (hence my mom and doctor warn in moderation) but this is the best offering I have found in Quebec. Pork shop (available at your local IGA) does a fine version however it's just the bit more delicious here at Lawrence. Also purchased are bottles of St Leon maple syrup. $25 a big bottle is a bit steep but it makes a wonderful gift or delicious in the morning on your pancakes or toast. Being in the heart of the Plateau then can cater to those who are willing to pay a bit more. I believe the meat shop is connected to Lawrence restaurant a few doors down which does a dandy brunch.

Yes, it's grungy in there, and smells weird, and is full of salty people, but I was able to get bags of groceries that fed me for an entire week for about $10. Admittedly that was a while ago, and I was a vegetarian back then, and I weighed less than 100 lbs, but hey I lived to tell this story. I was back at Segal's this past week, for a stroll down memory lane, and with the exception of some new security cameras and TV screens, it's exactly how I remembered it. It's still poorly lit. The refrigerated sections still have those yellowing plastic curtains. The floors are still dirty and it still smelled weird. Prices are a bit higher, but I would say keeping with inflation. They stock a few more organic items now. The bulk items used to just be in open tubs (like at Bulk Barn, minus the coverings), but are now in plastic garbage/recycling bins, with lids, lol. The "scoops" are plastic water jugs that are tied to the bins. Most are cracked or broken. I found this amusing. This place has apparently been around since 1927. Maybe it's just nostalgia speaking, but I have a soft spot in my heart for its "this is who I am, warts and all, take it or leave it" attitude.
