His answer, he gives me a cortisone shot and doesn't do an MRI, just x-rays. He never greets you when he comes in? He just says, "What do you want?" As a patient I came to him for help in diagnosing the pain, etc., he doesn't want to be bothered. He is rude, non-communicative, etc. His nurse assistant ordered an MRI which revealed a torn muscle, and yet he didn't even address this in my appointment (and acknowledged he hadn't even read or looked at the MRI). I was in terrible pain and he said do you want a shot? I said his nurse Angeles had suggested that. He was rude. I said i was in a lot of pain and he seemed angry with me (he kept saying I'm not going to do surgery on you - I didn't have any idea as to why he kept saying that). He then insulted me and left the room, presumably to give me a shot. After waiting 2.5 hours to see him he kept me waiting another 20 minutes so I left to go to the restroom and saw his nurse and told him what happened. He said he would talk to Hernandez. When Hernandez came back he appeared mad at me and said "I'm not going to give you a shot, and he seemed enjoy watching me beg to get something for the pain relief. He finally relented and gave me a shot and told me he was referring me to other doctors who probably wound not see me because he is such an excellent doctor. This guy is a sadist and should not be practicing medicine. What has happened to SCOI that they would kept such a disgusting, vile, rude creep like this on staff. UCLA you better do something about him (he also has malpractice suits against him i understand). Avoid him like the plague!.

I questioned him on several pre-op visits about possible negative outcomes but was given essentially none. He did say that if I left the bone broken bad things could occur. After the surgery to fix the bone break, I was in a huge cast for weeks. After that, two more casts, followed by a boot. His cast room staff assured me that the swelling and redness which started in my foot, and over the course of the casts and boot went to my hip, was normal. I asked them at every visit. Finally, they sent me for an ultrasound to check for a blood clot. The orders were written for arteries, not veins. Thus, no clot was found. I was told all was great. The pain, swelling and discoloration of my leg became unbearable. At my wife's urging, I went to urgent care. The doctor took one look at me and I was quickly admitted to the hospital. I had a solid clot from foot to waist, and bilateral pulmonary embolisms. I was told I was possibly days from dying. I had blood clot surgery, then a second surgery. My lower leg clot was left so long that it will be there forever. Due to the negligent care, foot numbness, botched blood clot detection, and continued pain while walking, I no longer trust him.

Even went back to fitness training (scaled and modified ofc). I was recommended to Dr. Guanche by my other orthopedic surgeon, Dr Trentacosta. She's incredible as well but her specialty is with knee injuries, not shoulder. After my shoulder injury, I tried extensive physical therapy. PT went on for 6 months, but unfortunately the pain was still there. Per my doctor, an injury like mine needed surgery, it won't heal otherwise. I didn't want the tears to get worse, so I looked into getting surgery. I was hesitant at first, but Dr. Guanche quickly calmed my nerves and discussed all my worries away. By far one of the most dissapointing experiences I've ever had with a doctor. This doctor was the only one I could get in to see on such short notice and, given that I had been walking on this broken foot for 4+ weeks prior, I didn't want to waste time. I took the appointment. The doctor was dismissive and didn't let me speak to provide my patient history and kept interrupting me whenever I tried to say anything. Now I see why this guy is the only one available all the time. I was then sent to be fitted with a boot. I was given a paper to sign stating that I received the boot and I noticed on there that the cost was listed as $850, with a patient responsibility of $187-ish. My coinsurance is 20% so my responsibility should be $170, nothing more. Now I received the bill and I see that I am being charged $1,600 for this same boot, which will raise my coinsurance to a whopping $320! The worst part? This boot costs about $70, with the highest price I've seen online being around $100. Definitely not $850 or $1,600!! I'm so displeased with how this was handled and will be seeking legal consult regarding this matter, especially the over billing aspect. I will be continuing care for this issue with a different doctor elsewhere rather than getting ripped off here. It's a shame, I've generally received good care with UCLA but SCOI is abysmal and I'm not even sure how they ended up partnered with UCLA.

A close friend of mine (who happened to be riding with me) recommended Dr Scott. I called his office and he squeezed me in the same day we were driving back from the mountains. He scheduled the MRI for me 10 minutes after my visit with him (conveniently located in his building), had the test read by a radiologist as well as reviewed it with a colleague hand expert the following afternoon. That evening he called me with the good (thankfully) news. I could not be more happy with his professionalism, kindness, and sense of urgency. I could not recommend this doctor more highly.....and, I can't think of any doctor who would go to these lengths in such a short amount of time!
