Had read about this place in the Fort Worth paper a couple of years ago, so we were passing through and stopped in for an appetizer and pie. (They're famous for their pies.) This place has been here for 60+ years and the exterior and furnishings are old, and worn, yet quite comfy. As they say, "Don't judge a book by its cover." We decided to split a cheeseburger and fries. It was really good and the fries are thin-cut waffle fries. Next we had pie...pecan and coconut cream. Yes!! As good as advertised. We met the current owner, the daughter of the original owners. She's been here her whole life.... Carrie. Interesting lady. After 5:00 on Tuesdays, burgers are $1 and the cheeseburger is $2. This was on my list to visit so we planned a trip specifically coming here from lunch on our way back home to Fort Worth from the hill country. Caught them after the Sunday lunch rush so sat right down and ordered. Love the old school diner with the soda fountain bar. Fresh pies were on display and had to save room too. The staff is all very friendly and down home. The prices are reasonable as well. I had the small (next size is double and then a triple party is XL) chicken fried steak with their fresh cut waffles fries. The CFS was remarkable and lived the gravy as well. Glad I opted for smaller size so I could have some pie. My wife let me have a bite of her patty melt and it was so delicious! You can taste the difference in a fresh groin beef patty too! Looks like Garry H. beat me to Jake and Dorothy's. Except, I think the smoking section is gone....dammit. Part eatery, local hang out, liars club breakfast, and pie spot. GF and I spent the night in Stephenville before a Sunday trip to Abilene to pick up our new kitten. Coffee was excellent and so was the old men sitting nearby talking weather and other touchy subjects. Reminded me of where my dad used to hang out in Dripping Springs, Texas. We're settling into a booth making breakfast decisions. Two eggs for me; one for her. We both had hash browns. I asked the waitress if the bacon was pre cooked. She indicated it wasn't. Asked for soft and described what I wanted; it didn't go well. I'm personally not seeing why this place made any Texas Monthly list. Best bites for me was the biscuits with cream gravy. They also did manage to cook our eggs to order. Maybe I'm just grumpy about the burnt bacon. Last time I was in Jake and Dorothy's was 53 years ago. When I was a kid in Euless our church youth group would head out on the church bus at 0400 to go to Uvalde for Bible camp on the Frio. We'd stop at Jake and Dorothy's around 0600-0630 in July each year to have breakfast, which was a hamburger, and a bottle of milk in one of those small glass bottles that was a miniature of the old style milk bottle the milkman used to leave on your porch. Those were some of the best memories from my youth, and I occasionally still love a good hamburger for breakfast, and that goes back to Jake and Dorothy's "July each year" breakfast for the church youth group from Euless. My husband likes this place and I used to as well. I love the waitresses. I love the fact that it's kind of dated inside. what I don't like. Is that my food never comes out hot. If I order breakfast, the eggs are hot. The potatoes are cool to lukewarm at best. if I'm going to pay for hot food and want it served HOT not lukewarm. Kitchen staff needs to do better. And the bad thing is, I even tell the waitress if my food does not come how hot I'm sending it back. And it still comes out lukewarm. So I never get to actually eat with the people T my table. Everybody else at my table seems to be fine with lukewarm food or they're just terrified of sending it back to the kitchen. I don't know which one but Jake and Dorothy's kitchen staff needs to do better. read more

Food was definitely good. Hubby and I both had plate lunch. Entree and 3 sides plus bread and dessert! Not being a local wasn't greeted and told to sit anywhere when we came in so I had to ask and also had to ask for a menu. The waitress was however nice but busy. Well this place is popular. I'm not sure why. I'll give it 3 stars because the catfish I ordered was good enough. Unfortunately, we were a party of 7, and two of the guys ordered hamburger steak which was completely burnt and inedible. 3 of the other guys didn't get their food to the point where we were going to be late for an appointment, so they asked for it in a box to which the waitress yelled "fantastic!" One guy also asked how big the soup portion was and she told him it was the size of a can of soup. Take that for what it's worth. The salad is just lettuce and tomatoes. The waitress was also kind of pushy about getting a tip. We left a tip of course but she asked how much it was going to be when we gave her our card which is kind of weird to me. The chicken fried steak melts in your mouth it is so tender. They tenderize real sirloin steak right in the kitchen, bread and fry it. Although we were just past the "breakfast time" the kitchen was still happy to accommodate. My eggs were perfectly scrambled, the bacon was thick and crispy and the biscuit melted in my mouth. Was told the Chicken Fried Steak was their specialty and combined with the waffle fries is what made them famous. Salad was a handful of iceberg lettuce with four chunks of tomato. That was definitely the warning as how the entree was going to taste. CFS came out tepid at best and it sat on a scoop of gravy that was ice cold. No amount of salt was going to save this disaster of an entree. The famous waffle fries were so limp, they probably had been out of the fryer over 15 minutes. I got chicken strips and wished I had gotten the tenders. Who knew there was a difference in quality between those two words? The chicken that came on his friend's salad is what I thought I would be getting when I ordered my plate.
