I loved their beef udon. It was exactly what I needed on a cold winter day. The beef was super tender and delicious, it went well with the broth which added an extra rich flavour. The okonomiyaki was interesting, I was curious since it had udon noodle in it. I still would preferred yakisoba instead of udon, but it was pretty good nonetheless. The chicken katsu with chicken wasn't what I imagined, it was a bit blend and wasn't as crunchy. This doesn't change the fact that I'll be back to try their other dishes. Highly recommand!

    KOREAN FRIED CHICKEN (ORIGINAL)

This place is amazing! It's cozy. I recommend making a reservation if you plan on going after 6:30. I went around 5, but called, and was offered one of the three tables available. The food was splendid. We had the KARAAGE, BULGOGI DOLSOT, and KOREAN FRIED CHICKEN (ORIGINAL). My favorite was the bulgogi. You can request it spicy, but it still was not spicy to me. Comes with rice and an egg. The karaage and fried chicken were good too. The sweet and sour sauce was my favorite. Other options include: CHIPOTTE & JALAPENO MAYO. They do not have a bar. It appears they only have select beer options. Overall great experience with great food.

The lighting and the music really set the mood of this place. The service was friendly and efficient. I ordered the tofu as appetizer and it was one of the best ones I've had! The sauce wasn't too sweet nor salty and the tofu itself was soft on the inside but the exterior could've been a little crunchier. The pork katsu was crunchy and savory, the sauce paired with it really nicely as it added a little sweet tang to it. The sides also complimented the dish and the rice could've been softer as I assumed it was old rice since it was quite lukewarm and hard once it arrived to me. I would definitely visit again to try new dishes!

    Seafood Soondubu

The Chicken Katsu w/ Curry is one of Jako's most popular dishes and it did not disappoint. On the other hand, the Seafood Soondubu was more salty to my liking and compared to other restaurants (I order Soondubu regularly when eating at Korean spots so I feel like I have a general idea by now ). I needed to pair each spoon with rice to balance out the saltiness. To my surprise both dishes had generous portion sizes and I appreciated the amount of seafood in the Soondubu (other restaurants cheat out on this, but not Jako). Looking forward to visiting here again next time I'm in Montreal!

I tried the fish katsu, the korokke and the karaage with sweet and spicy sauce. The fish katsu was delicious and super fresh. The fish's texture was springy and bouncy and it came with a delicious tartare sauce. The korokke was very flavorful and soft. The karaage was juicy. Everything on the menu is affordable (total of 31$ after tax and tips for 3 dishes). The service was fast and the staff were friendly. Would definitely order again.

    1. Okonomiyaki ($16) 2. Spicy Squid Dolsot ($17) 3. Bulgogi Yaki Udon ($17) JaKo has been on my Montreal eats list for so long. This place is a Japanese-Korean fusion that has a direct menu with many delicious choices. Everything we got there was spectacular! The yaki udon was one of the best I have tried, with so much flavour and umami. It can be a very overpowering taste to have the whole dish to yourself, so sharing these platters was a great idea! The squid dolsot was VERY spicy, but it really hit the spot on a cold day. I highly recommend those 2 dishes if you are to visit! The interior is quite cozy and well decorated but has a smaller seating capacity, definitely try and get a reservation beforehand! We did not plan ahead and were turned away, but the staff were so nice and helpful that when they saw us standing outside planning our next dinner choice, they fit us in between some reservations! Overall, this was one of the best restaurants we visited during our stay in Montreal!

    Salmon Donburi

New cheap eats!! Jako is the new restaurant that has taken over the previous Ganadara space. It offers a variety of Japanese-Korean dishes. The best thing about this restaurant is that: it's great for your buck! 13$ for a bowl of Salmon Donburi & a miso soup is included! Donburi is essentially a bowl of rice with your choice of protein. The salmon donburi came with ikura (salmon roe) and with some sprinkle of ginger. The rice is lightly salted with some soy sauce. We really enjoyed this dish & would recommend everyone to try this! The okonomiyaki is not your conventional Japanese pancake. It is more of a pan fried udon style. This dish is a bit more salty than I would of preferred but it is packed with flavours. The karaage was my least favourite because it was very battered. I believe the sweet&spicy one would've been a better choice since it would've had the sauce to make it less hard to chew. I definitely recommend people to give this place a try! And I can't wait to go back and try different dishes.

    Pork curry katsu

[Fr plus bas] My boyfriend and I went because many friends told us they loved it but it didn't amaze us. We took the agedashi tofu. It's fried soft tofu in a sweet sauce. Since there's so much sauce it wasn't crunchy but overall it was fine. The bulgogi dolsot was good, well seasoned and a good portion. I was expecting the pork curry katsu to be spicy but it wasn't. It was still good. The restaurant is well decorated but it gets loud very easily. We went at 5:30 on a Friday night without a reservation, but I would recommend to make one. Will come back to try other dishes!

Tempura Udon from @restaurant.jako * Delicious dish of crispy shrimp tempura, savoury soup, and warm udon noodles. Loved it so much, affordable and perfect for the cold season. * Same chef, same location but different menu. The owner of Jako used to be head chef at Ganadara and he is now offering a complete different menu. I was skeptical at first because Ganadara will always have a soft spot in my , but I was surprised by the amazing quality of the food. Don't miss your chance at a delicious menu of Korean cuisine. Jako offers a romantic /chill vibe. You feel that the chef really cares about quality.

You can also order to go here I believe. They really operate efficiently, expect fast service! Tables are tightly situated and there's a cozy bar situation where I sat this time, able to watch the chefs cook right in front of me. The daily specials are posted on their Instagram page, as well as written on pieces of paper around the restaurant. My server quickly helped me to water and a glass of sake. I placed a to go order for one of the daily specials, the grilled sea bass with sushi rice and salad, with some kimchi. I also ordered the BBQ chicken with tortilla and salad, as well as vegetable gyoza. Everything was incredible. Truly. The gyoza came topped with green onions and was SO crispy and hot and was perfect with their soy sauce. I thought sea bass was wonderful with a unique almost smoky flavor that melted in my mouth paired with the slightly sweet sticky rice. The barbecue chicken was great as well and better the next day. One thing I don't really understand is why they served plain flour tortillas cut into quarters with their food. We didn't utilize this, nor the white butter/mayo sauce that came alongside it. I hope to eat here often, for years to come and am so happy to see this iconic Japanese restaurant still thriving years later.

I really appreciate the ease of booking and how I didn't have to think about what people were going to order. One hiccup was that I had indicated ahead of time that one of the guests had a seafood allergy, which I understand can be difficult for Japanese restaurant. I had expected them to tailor the $70 menu to her, however, they let us know that it was gonna be difficult and instead asked her to pick from the à la carte menu. She had no problem with this, but I felt bad and didn't want her to think that I had an indicated ahead of time of her dietary restriction. Overall, the meal was good. It was a little bit slow to start coming out. I think our total dining time was over two hours which was fine because we were celebrating something but for the first 30 minutes I feel like no food came out. A little bit on the salty side, but I enjoyed every dish. For the price point I think it was perfect. I would recommend this for a group dinner again. The high top tables weren't the most comfortable for such a large group as we were essentially split in two, but for a group of 6-8 it would be perfect!

They serve everything tapas style here meaning small plates that you share with others. Even the bowls are a little smaller portioned, a little harder to share. However I think the hot appetizers like the takoyaki (octopus balls), okonomiyaki (japanese omelette/pancake), and the karage (fried chicken) are the must tries! They are super beginner friendly options that taste super good! Lots of umami flavor and they are perfectly sized and portioned for sharing. I also enjoyed their mocktail drinks. All the items came out one by one, and were nicely timed. Once we finished an item another came out! Although they were kind of busy I think they did a great job at service. The ambiance is also amazing, I love the indoor decor.

The vibes are casual, the waiters joke and talk in a more hang out way, and there's no rush to eat and move. They recommend the group meal offering and I can report that it is a TON of food and definitely all their best items. Our colleagues that shared it were the happiest, though they admit they could never hear what was delivered and they are blindly with no reference. I had skewers that I quite enjoyed, though one had enough cheese to last me a week, some of the best edamame (everyone wanted some), and a helping of rice due to my gluten free needs. The cocktails were really something special, definitely a menu you want to drink through. I wanted to love Biirū, but I do admit the reviews around the meal experience and communication from the waiters was fairly accurate. I don't think a few of us would've come here with our allergies had it not been a work dinner. Their understanding of celiac disease was low, like sure I could eat the soy sauce and not react right now, but I will later and that shouldn't be a risk a business presents. Further, we had to confirm 4 times that one dish was made on its own pan due to a severe anaphylactic allergy. The staff don't seem to speak to one another, so the delivery of food was horrible with parts going to one end when they belonged elsewhere.
