Dr. Deutsch performed strabismus surgery on me almost 6 weeks ago and I can honestly say that he changed the rest of my life for the better, which is saying a lot since I'm almost 50 yrs. old. From the very first office visit, that was in downtown Brooklyn, he made me feel comfortable to put my vision health in his hands. He was compassionate and wanted to make sure he was going to help me in any way that he could, and he did. Both of my eyes are aligned correctly which has made me be able to do even the simplest of tasks better. He took the time to answer all my questions before and after surgery since he makes himself so accessible to his patients. He's a great doctor and believe me I've been to plenty of them. read more

I had been a patient for many years although the staff should have been my first clue that something was off. The dr was good when removing my first cataract but when I went to a retina specialist I was I formed I required immediate surgery. My retina was almost detached & there was serious scar tissue. I am so very grateful I followed my instincts & sought a specialist. read more

Inexcusable and unprofessional. Drove one hour from Staten Island after taking half a day from work and my 6 yo daughter leaving school early to make her bi-annual exam. Get there after walking in the freezing cold with two small children after our commute to find a piece of paper on the door explaining that the dr has moved offices. No phone call or email was sent notifying me of this. After then commuting to the second/new location no one answered. And the phone just rings. This is completely unacceptable. I was never even sent her medical records. Shame on Dr James Deutsch and his office. read more

I have just had 2 cataract surgeries with Dr Deutsch On his recommendation, I had the new Panoptic lens implanted and I am thrilled the results. I no longer wear glasses and have 20/20 vision. The surgery was painless and took very little time. I highly recommend Dr Deutsch. read more

Dr Deutsch is an excellent eye doctor. We have brought our five year old son to him several times and every time he has been professional, warm, prompt and helpful. No complaints at all. I should add that we've never had any problems with the staff in the office. They are always kind to our son and we've never had trouble scheduling an appointment or getting seen quickly. read more

I have been a patient of Dr. Deutsch for more years than I can remember. Recently, I had cataract surgery, which I am pleased to say went well. My Issues are not with his surgical abilities but with the lack of customer service and professionalism demonstrated by his staff and most particularly, Liz. I had an appointment scheduled for today at 5:30 p.m. I had an earlier medical appointment which ran longer than I expected when realized that I was not going to be able to be there timely I called the office to say that I could make it by 6:10. Liz, who is a member of his staff, without pause, said that I could not be seen because they were almost finished there and the doctor was performing a procedure there on a patient (not ANOTHER patient, but, a patient, as though I had no rights,, privileges or value, what am I, chopped liver?) at 6:00 p.m.. On at least two of my most recent office visits, one of which was post surgical, I had to wait approximately an hour and on the other, I left my job early, which created a problem, and still had to wait 50 minutes past my time, I could have completed my work day, and still been there at least 40 minutes before I was seen. Liz offered me an appointment for next Wednesday at an inconvenient time, which I refused, then one for the 8th. I am scheduled to have my other eye operated on July 2nd and the dr. wanted to see me prior to the upcoming surgery. When I informed her of that she responds that 'well, he's going to see you the day after anyway, so I guess he'll check both eyes then. I don't think that that is what is considered, "Good Answer"! I would venture to say that she did not ask the doctor when she put me on hold or else she would have said, 'the doctor said....' I was surprised to see so many other review which the same sentiments as mine. That's sad. Ultimately, I accepted an appointment for 6/30 at 3:30 p.m. Frankly, I am not pleased, it's bad enough having to wait what seems like forever. but being treated poorly...? read more

Dr. Deutsch was great! We took out 8 month old son because our pediatrician said he had stigmatism in his eye. Dr. Deutsch was kid friendly and very accommodating to us as he ran his tests and made his analysis. He is very knowledgeable in his work and I will highly recommend him to anyone else in the future. Dr. Deutsch is a fine eye doctor. Unfortunately his staff is rude and unprofessional. Waiting time there is always at least an hour past your appointment time, anytime I've complained the answer is always "We had a lot of emergencies". If you don't value your own time by all means make an appointment. read more

I have been to Dr. Deutsch first for an issue with my baby's eye, then for surgery on my own eye. Both experiences have been very positive: no long wait times, he is thorough and careful with his work. He is easy going and patient with questions. Dr. Deutsch is an excellent doctor and a class act. He did a wonderful job when our one-year-old needed surgery near his eye (in addition to his excellent medical work, he was kind and caring both with our baby and us, the nervous parents). This past summer, I had an opthalmological emergency of my own, and I was given a next-day appointment when I described my eye pain. FInally, just this past week, our son (who is now 4) had to get stitches removed from his face, near his eye. No other doctor would agree to remove the stitches (which were put in in the ER) because they were too close to the eye and I guess they were afraid of liability. Dr. Deutsch gave us an immediate appointment and took them out for free. read more

Dr. Deutsch is a really excellent ophthalmologist. He was my children's doctor and has been mine for more than 15 years. I recently had double cataract surgery and was very pleased with the results. He has a confident but calm manner and encourages questions. While I wouldn't describe his staff as rude, they are vigilant gatekeepers, though I've found that treating them courteously has good results. The doctor himself goes out of his way to be accessible; he called me personally after a visit to see how I was, and even gave me his own cell number. Be aware that it can take a couple of months to get a non-emergency appointment because this is a very busy Brooklyn Heights practice, but it's worth the wait. read more

I would like to agree with previous raters who say that Dr. Deutsch himself seems to be a fine doctor, I will not go back because his office staff is just too difficult to deal with. They made an error with my appointment and cancelled my appointment without telling me! Then they kept me waiting on the phone for over 15 minutes in order to make another. When I was in the office, in the waiting room, they were very unprofessional and talked loudly amongst themselves and paid scant attention to the patients who were waiting. I will not go back because they were too difficult and almost rude. The person who wrote before said "unpleasant, lackadaisical, and bordering on rude." As a pediatrician for 22 years I think I can be a very good judge of what makes a good doctor. After referring hundreds of patients to Dr. Deutsch I can safely say that he is an amazing doctor. I get feedback from all of my Brooklyn families and they are always thrilled with his thoroughness and professionalism and expertise. The reason I am writing this review only now is because yesterday I was a parent bringing my own daughter to him. I was very worried with her symptoms and he spent a long time with her doing all the necessary tests in a calm child friendly manner. He figured out what was going on and was excellent in his history and physical exam and diagnosis. I think people have to realize - when it comes to your health - you want the doctor to give you the right diagnosis and to be a superb diagnostician and get the correct answer to what the presenting problem is. Dr. Deutsch does that and more. My daughter had to go through a vigorous exam with dilated eyes and was worried about the whole process - and she left there happy and thinking he was an amazing nice man! This is what you need to review in a doctor - not how courteous someone's staff is. His staff was actually nice and professional. But we aren't going to a doctor for a friendly chat with staff. We are going there to see if a doctor can help figure out what is going on. And to make us better. And after so many years of working with Dr. Deutsch and now after being a patient of his - I can not recommend him with more enthusiasm. He is absolutely amazing! read more

My daughter is now 20 years old and Dr. Deutsch operated on my daughter at age 3 and 8 for strabismus on both eyes at LICH. He did an excellent job on both occasions. He corrected the strabismus and maintained my daughters vision and saved her from a life long distorted self concept. He is very respectful, attentive,compassionate and takes the time to educate the client on the problem, proposed procedure and possible care outcome with safety as his major focus. read more

I've been coming here for about 16 years and that is a testament to Dr. Deutsch's mastery of his profession. Unfortunately, his staff has consistently been on the decline. They are loud, rude, do not reply to phone calls or requests, they rudely tell patients to stop using their cell phones while they themselves are huddled around their social media sites on their own phones. They consistently speak ill of the patients after getting off the phones with them. The office is overbooked and there is no exclusivity anymore. This is the second time they messed up my appointment time. The waiting area is filthy, the wood is scratched, the fabrics are stained and the magazine rack hasn't been changed in god knows how long. I only know this because the wait time usually exceeds an hour. read more

While I do believe Dr. Deutsch is a good doctor. I will say that in fact, his staff is truly awful. Unfriendly, lackadaisical, and bordering on rude. Regardless of what time your appt is, you will be waiting an average of over an hour to be seen and his waiting room is ridiculously small. After this last mistake (2nd time by the way) -where they gave me an appt for one day, but put it in their calendar for another. I am done! This is not the way I wish to be treated. I take all of our doctor's appts seriously and have never had a problem like this with any other doctor. On top of this, i requested that my cell phone # be my primary source for contacting me and they still do not do so. I found an amazing place called Pediatric Opthalmic Consultants and you try them. At the 185 Montague location, I wasn't even able to have my kids seen by this doctor so I can't speak about his service. I will say, however, that his receptionist is HIGHLY unprofessional. She is rude, both over the phone, and in person. There was some sort of mixup in their office with the referral. The entire time that I tried to talk to this B word, she was rude. Then when my children's doctor wanted to speak to her over the phone to resolve the issue she said, "I don't have time to speak to her!" When the doctor said she won't refer anyone to their office ever again, she said, "FINE!" I guess Dr. Deutsch must be so rich that he doesn't mind losing patients. Poor customer service is a reflection on the doctor, he needs to fix this issue ASAP! Fire that trash...she doesn't belong in any job that requires dealing with people, especially a pediatric ophthalmologist! Come on man! read more
