I was initially reluctant to undergo surgery because I had heard stories from others whose surgeries with different doctors had not gone well. Naturally, I was nervous. I'm so happy to say that my experience was completely different. My surgery went extremely well, and I could not be happier with the results. Dr. Burdi ordered physical therapy and an MRI that showed that the L5-S1 joint degeneration was causing my pain. When physical therapy and cortisone shots were found to be ineffective, surgery was explained as the best way to address the pain. I was hesitant at first due to the lengthy recovery and time I would need to take off from work (I am a kindergarten teacher). However, I decided that surgery would be the best option for me and I am so glad I had the procedure. Dr. Burdi did a great job explaining the procedure and recovery. The pain after surgery was minimal and I was off pain medication by the second day. Getting in and out of bed took some help for the first few days until I was more mobile. I didn't realize how tiring daily activities would be after surgery and how frequently I would need to rest. Each week after surgery I noticed great improvement. I never completely understood how involved your back is in every day to day activity. I am stronger now than I was for years prior to my surgery and I am pain free. Make sure you utilize physical therapy and keep up your exercises at home. It makes a world of difference. Now being one year post-op, I am so glad I had the surgery. I was first referred to Dr. Labovitch in 2009 when I was 68 y.o., for a torn rotator cuff and a…read morefractured greater tuberosity (bone) from an ice-skating accident. My goal was to regain 100% range of motion so I could resume my normal activities including my exercise regimen comprising dumbbells and chinning bar. I had spoken to a neighbor older than me who had a torn rotator cuff repaired and could not reach up much above her shoulder. That was not for me. I knew that young people and sports people required 100% restoration while old people probably did not care as much. My research of Dr. Labovitch revealed that he was a sports medicine physician. Sports people with an injury don't want to have any limitations after treatment, so that was the best sign that Dr. Labovitch was the orthopedic surgeon for me. When I went to his office, I gained my ultimate confidence when his waiting room was filled mostly with young people. My surgery was successful, and although it took a bit (maybe 9 months) of expected rehab effort on my part, done partly at home, I regained 100% range of motion, and my arm and shoulder felt no different from the way it was before my accident. I had several subsequent visits to Dr. Labovitch for different issues, and each time his diagnosis was perfect and my recovery complete and uneventful. When requiring PT I always went to California Rehabilitation & Sports Therapy at 36 Mauchly in Irvine, run by Anthony Bisaccia, who is very competent, has a great team, and is wonderful to work with.

The technician that did the X Ray was a young woman who did not give me a lead protection cover for my body. I asked her if I needed one and she said "No, you used to need one, but these days the machines are more advanced". But I chose to ask for one anyway. I just wanted to post this review because I don't think what I was told was correct. So the office manager should make sure their staff is protecting their patients during every X Ray. This is why I gave only a 2 Star rating. But they are good and Dr Labovitch is knowledgeable and nice.

The main receptionist on the first floor was courteous. The medical staff was attentive and understanding. I am specially calling out the second floor receptionist.

My physical therapist recommended I go to Dr Duggan because his patients were doing a lot better than I was. Dr Duggan performed a second surgery on December 11th where he took out the pins, scraped the scar tissue and forced my knee to bend under anesthesia. I went to my first physical therapy appointment the same day. That was less than 3 weeks ago. I can now bend my knee 110° and I'm still working on it. It has made a huge difference in my life. Honestly, this doctor set a new low bar in medicine. He was over an hour late to a 9 am…read moreappointment. Didn't say hi or introduce himself on intake. Was super rushed, asked questions and interrupted both my husband and myself when we provided answers. He disregarded other doctor's diagnoses and dismissed my pain complaints. He only looked at my scans and provided a diagnosis. When my husband said that was unsatisfying, I also said that it seemed inappropriate to diagnose without any physical exam. He then did a perfunctory physical exam with no gloves, no hand wash, no hand sanitizer. I literally cried through the physical exam the. He told me that things that had helped in the past (injection) were not actually helpful. His poor bedside manner, poor interpersonal skills, and terrible time management made this the worst doctor I have seen in over 40 years. At the end of my appointment my husband said he wouldn't have believed how bad this doctor was unless he witnessed it himself and that we would never let him anywhere near my spine ever again.

It's not often a doctor demonstrates such empathy along with intelligence and skill. He is an angel and his office assistant , Bobbie, very kind and quickly responsive.
