    Found a kindness rock.
    Dianna B.

I've lived in this area of the County for 90% of my life and never knew this was here. I don't think it's been around all that long, honestly, but I could be wrong. ANYWAY. Located off of Plathe road, this preserve is tucked off and hidden by the natural beauty of Florida scrub. The road that leads back to the preserve is dusty, but the left turn that I took led me to a park that had wandering trails through the Florida brush, over well constructed and planned out walk ways through the marsh and lakes, as well as an Eagle Scout's project of benches that provide plenty of seating. There are plenty of opportunities to walk, run, hike, bike, play on the play ground, photograph the wild life or just BE. Speaking of the playground: It's lovely, with a path all for the kids that tells them a story, a path to literacy, which in truth is very important in this state. There is also a Free little library here, so if you have books you'd like to share, bring one or 15 to leave or take one, they're there for you to have or give. I'm so going back to the JEG preserve, to hide rocks or just to practice being present. You should too.

5 stars for this 8 AM to Sundown preserve that is, by no means, run down, as suggested by another reviewer. It's GORGEOUS! I'll definitely be back, but w/ a kayak next time! I highly recommend Florida Hikes to learn more about this preserve, especially when (at this time) the park's county webpage is not displaying park information. If you have a young child, this is the perfect place to visit. Although the playground is currently closed, the .25 mile hiking trail is not. It's named Story Walk, & incorporates 18 marked stations to engage kids in literary skills-- see pics. Friends of the New Port Richey Library have made this nature adventure possible. I loved watching the doting mom ahead of me stop & engage w/ her two children @ each sign. There are gorgeous wood shelters that would normally allow families to picnic underneath. There is a restroom (currently closed), and there is a kayak/canoe launch & rack. There's a boardwalk, a bridge, a fishing area, & a bench where park goes can chill & enjoy the beauty of nature. This truly is a gorgeous area, especially considering it is sandwiched within the growing town. It's free to visit & parking is plentiful. The road in is not paved, but it's currently in very good condition. Unfortunately, no dogs are allowed.

This little diamond in the ruff is so beautiful! It has a big wonderful playground as well as the beautiful areas to walk through. Beautiful wood bridges/walkways, I would def recommend and so would my 3.5 year old!

We enjoy hiking here. Perfect for kids. There is a little story walk on one of the paths. Picnic areas are beautiful and clean. A fishing pier. Lots of animals to see.

The park itself is very nice! The trail is mostly shaded which is nice on a hot Florida day. The restroom facilities are pretty clean too. Barely any cell service for AT&T but honestly who cares if your out in nature!

Not much to see or look. It's kind a run down park. Maybe I went the wrong time. I will revisit again.

Beautiful open tropical green spaces, Picnic areas with BBQ's & Shelters, lots of shady areas & small green forestry areas. A lovely playground area for the kids, very nice restrooms, trails, fishing piers, lookout towers, wildfire all over, gorgeous views of the mangroves. A nature lovers paradise. Photo ops in every direction. Birds everywhere, perfectly preserved natural habitats, the sounds of nature all around, trickling water sounds in the distance. No signs of civilization. Not another human in sight. You would not think that this kind of hidden, almost untouched, natural treasure exist so close to the city, but it does. And it's very well maintained. While I was there a single gardener came briefly, checked things out, weed wacked around the edge of a sidewalk & left. As it already looked perfectly manicured when he showed up. I was there for a long time & there was no one else there except the brief visit from the landscaper & one other gentleman I had a brief but lovely conversation with. When I first got there, I ran into this one single gentleman that was bow hunting. He had a great big bow & arrows. I asked him if he had seen any of the Flamingos & he said "not today" I took that as a good sign to keep exploring as I must be close! haha. Later on, as I was leaving that same gentleman went back to his truck put his bow away & got out his fishing pole & gear. I thanked him for his time again & wished him luck fishing. He then wished me luck on my hunt for the wild flamingos & quickly, silently, vanished back into the woods. New Port Richey is a gorgeous place that has it all. It's quickly becoming my favorite playground on Florida's iconic Nature Coast. Highest Recommendations.

I cannot tell you the amount of wildlife we saw. It was absolutely amazing. We saw Osprey and Ibis and tricolor Heron. The list goes on and on. We also saw a pair of osprey in a nest. The sign upon entering clearly says: "No swimming allowed here" and I wondered why is that? This park is clearly on the edge of the Gulf of Mexico with a large beach area, so why no swimming? That is a great question. As you enter the park, even from my photo of the park sign at the entrance you can see this very creepy plant in the background. So I wondered if that had anything to do with the "no swimming" rules. So I did some digging & this is what I learned. The very creepy plant adjacent to this park is a power plant called the "Anclote Power Plant" owned by Progress Energy (located near Holiday, Fla. in Pasco County) It generates more than 1,000 megawatts (MW) from two steam units. "Progress Energy Florida" says it's to convert the Anclote Power Plant to CLEANER natural gas. Their webpage says that the Emissions-reducing conversion will "ALLOW" the company to comply with "NEW" federal standards. Hua? (Not good word salad folks) yikes. BECAUSE, "Currently, the plant uses oil & natural gas. The change is required to "ALLOW" the company to comply with "NEW" federal emission standards for coal & oil-fired generating units, including the EPA's new "MERCURY and AIR TOXICS STANDARDS" (MATS) rule." YIKES. (Nope, not good word salad folks) No wonder there is no swimming allowed. Do not recommend.

This one is kind of hidden and it seems like the only people who know it is there are the ones whose kids have games on the fields. The playground is small, but it's clean and shaded. The ground is mulch. There are 3 slides, quite a few swings, including baby swings, picnic tables, a nice small pond to look at, and it's fenced in. There are monkey bars and a sliding bar as well. It's more connected with multiple areas to play as oppose to the disjointed old metal dina-eye-sour that was here. They also added more swings as well as a joint toddler and adult swing combo which allows a parent to swing with their toddler that may be to scared to swing on their own. The trees have a canopy that provides shade but I wish these were cut back just a tad bit and a reflective overhang was placed to provide shade. In the peak of the Florida heat I'm sure the plastic will get very hot. The "rock climbing" wall is a nice addition. With so many different little nooks to explore I wish there was a water fountain placed within the play area that the little kiddos could reach to stay hydrated. Parents either have to bring their own (I always do) or drag/beg their kid to leave the play area and exit to the bathrooms where the water fountains are.
