My wife and I have been rather disappointed by the lack of quality pediatricians in Santa Barbara. Our friends make recommendations and then we are not impressed. Why does no one mention Doctor Brewer? His office is fantastic! Calm atmosphere, nice helpful staff and a knowledgeable doctor. Dr. Brewer is so awesome!! My 1 & 1/2 year old son sadly got 6 stitches on his forehead, with a visit to the ER & follow up appointment to remove the stitches with Dr. Brewer. When it was time to remove the stitches, Dr. Brewer was super amazing with Evan! He was so calm with him and communicated in the best way with Evan to help him understand what he was doing. Having stitches is so scary and traumatic, especially for little ones who don't fully understand what's going on! but Dr. Brewer helped him be so strong about it! He took his time calmly evaluating Evan's stitches and making a plan to remove the glue and stitches safely and accurately. We all cheered and Dr. Brewer congratulated Evan for being so strong! On our way out Evan got a little Hot Wheels toy car to take home! read more

Wonderful office staff, they are always very kind and helpful. Dr Brewer is nice and has a calm demeanor. My older son (2 years) hates to go to the doctor but Dr Brewer is patient with him. Nice clean office, I also like that they have an open clinic on fridays I believe which is nice in case something comes up and you need to see the dr on short notice. I would give Dr. Brewer more than 5 stars if I could. He is the best pediatrician in town for many reasons. I have 2 special needs twin girls. He helped us find a diagnosis very early and to get all the help they needed, even going out of his way to research and get answers. We are very grateful for him because now my girls are thriving. He is very patient and takes time to explain everything. He always gives us enough time to discuss my girls medical needs, and listen to our concerns. You can tell he really cares about our kids which means a lot. I always feel comfortable asking questions. He takes time to check our babies every visit no matter how simple the issue is, he is never in a rush. He talks to the kids and treat them like little people. He is awesome at giving vaccines, and does it in a way that the Kids don't even notice. We needed a good pediatrician for our complex medical babies and dr Brewer is been beyond awesome There is a lot I can say about our experience with Dr. Brewer, but I'll just say he is the best and we feel very lucky to have him as our kids pediatrician. His receptionist Briana is amazing too She always finds a way to squeeze us in so my babies get to been seen she is very friendly and helpful. read more

Had a good experience with my 17yo getting multiple vaccinations for a trip abroad in 2020 for school just as Covid was going on. Doctor seemed nice and thorough. There was no wait as some other reviews mentioned but again during Covid there were many less office visits. I'd recommend him. He's a smart personable doctor. read more

Dr Brewer is a great pediatrician and person in general. He's not all smiles or anything but he definitly knows what he's talking about. He has always been supportive of our parenting decisions, even if they aren't the ones he would choose for himself. My only real advice is to make sure you don't schedule your appointment during an open clinic. The open clinic is amazing and I absolutely love that they offer it....one of the major pros, but we've ended up waiting extremely long b/c of this. Final note - we have been with Dr. Brewer for 2 years, and we have 2 children that go to him. A 2 year old and a 6 month old. read more

We're moving and hope we can find another pediatrician as excellent as Dr. Brewer. He was consistently patient, calm, and understanding when we, as first time parents, came to him with every rash, scrape, and running nose. He is very knowledgeable, and keeps his gentle bedside manner even in the face of our screaming toddler. And he gives to quickest vaccinations I've ever seen. read more

Dr. Brewer is a great Doctor. He's certainly introverted but I prefer a knowledgeable doctor over an overly chatty one that doesn't know what their doing, and this guy knows what he's doing. He came after hours to see my daughter who was running a very high fever and administered antibiotics. I was very thankful and reminded me why I've stuck around since my firstborn was a baby. He's one of the few doctors in the SB area that accept medical/cencal and once my insurance ran out I choose him. BIG MISTAKE!! He has a ridiculous amount of patients and cannot give them the time and care they need. Every time my kids have had an appt. we still wait around 30 or more min. to be seen, once we're in a room it's another 30 min wait. If you want a second opinion and need a referral, he will give you the run around to avoid giving you one. Him and his father are notoriously known as the brewers, they have a bad reputation and I understand why. Avoid bringing your children here, we are switching doctors and I am filing a formal complaint against him. read more

My son and I like Dr. Brewer. He's very nice, and his visits are not rushed. I was concerned about my teenage son smoking pot, and Dr. Brewer offered to talk to my son about that when I told Dr Brewer I was concerned. Dr. Brewer's talk with my son about pot smoking and drugs made a difference with my son, and I appreciated Dr. Brewers extra time with my son very much. read more

My first visit. Waited over an hour with my antsy and hungry 3 yr old. Being a pediatrician I was surprised that he didn't even speak directly to my daughter. Instead he spoke to me, though was not overly friendly or welcoming. There was no mention of an apology for waiting such a long time from him or the staff. He recommended a flu shot, which is always covered by my insurance, though they wouldn't run it through the insurance. The front desk told me that I would have to get reimbursed myself, though couldn't provide me with a receipt or print out of the services for the day. I was very unimpressed! I can't imagine dealing with a doctor and office like that with a sick child. I will be looking for a new pediatrician! read more

Given the circumstances dr brewer does the best he can with so many patients

We had an ok experience moving over to Dr. James Brewer after his father retired. I felt the one time we saw him, the exam and experience with the Dr. himself was satisfactory and he was pleasant. We scheduled an appointment when we left for part 2 of HPV shot that has do be done several weeks after the first round. I had to reschedule the appointment 6 days in advance and they told me I could not have an appointment until the end of April. Keep in mind this is for a shot! A 5 minute visit. The receptionist welcomed me to walk in - however, I am not interested in waiting in a small waiting room with other sick walk in patients for a shot. I ask the receptionist again to make sure I understood that I would have to wait 4 months to reschedule a shot. She made no effort to make this work- even within the month. I then called another Dr. and got in with in the same week. Sadly Dr. Brewer and his staff don't understand that people do not want to wait in a room with sick walk-ins to get a routine shot. Not at all the same care that we got from his father's clinic for many years. If you are looking for that warm welcoming office , where you know you are going to feel taken care of with reasonable amount of patience, this is not it. Keep searching. read more
