However, they are very good for other things like cheap DVDs, stationery, unusual craft items and silly gifts, especially around Christmas time when they always have a few shelves stocked with daft electronic widgets and 'executive' desk toys that can be great for stocking fillers or Secret Santa dips. I'd popped into this Argyle Street branch as I was passing, with no particular agenda other than having a browse around as I know they have quite an extensive selection of goods downstairs. As it happened, I left without buying anything on this occasion. However, I was very impressed by a selection of 3D cardboard letters that they had. I don't know what I would use them for at the moment, but I'm convinced that they will come in handy at some point, so I have mentally bookmarked these for future reference (and I took a picture too!).

It's decent for picking up some bottles of water or crisps or that on the move but on a day to day basis, it can be quite expensive for a 500ml bottle of Coke and such. I just hope they last. Woolworths and WH Smith remind me of the glory days of being a kid. If this place goes, what have I got left?

If I have a lot of stuff to buy, I'll get in the car and go to Staples, but for the odd file folder or pen, it's easier to come here. Mostly I buy printer ink when my cartridges are beyond the point where they can be recycled at Cartridge World down the road, and for that alone, I am grateful for the presence of Ryman. Incidentally, did you know that printer ink is the most expensive fluid on the planet? After purchasing a couple of XL cartridges here, you will soon appreciate that fact. Although they do have a 25% off the second cartridge, so it's worth stocking up if you can afford to take out a second mortgage to do so. The staff are always helpful and cheery at making sure you can find what you're looking for, although I suspect this might be more of a tactic to deter shoplifters to be honest. For a relatively small shop, they do have a good stock of pretty much anything to fill your stationery requirements, and since the demise of the John Smiths bookstore (which had a great stationery department), Ryman is a welcome addition to the Byres Road shopping scene.

It's not on the same level as other stationery shops for an exciting shopping experience. There's not many cute notebooks, fun novelties or drool-worthy pens (I love stationery, big time!) - but what they do have is a good selection and not bad prices. The staff are ok, not overly friendly and always on the upsell but it doesn't hurt so that's fine. Thanks Ryman for being so handy when I need you the most!

Instead, the area to the left of the ramp now has lots of interesting stationery and other knick-knacks - notebooks, wrapping papers, local interest books, games and general 'stuff'. It's a good place to browse for that little stocking-filler present for somebody. The other side still carries a good selection of cards. Things have gotten busier now, and there's often a longer queue for the post office than there used to be. They do have a self-service machine, but I've always found it unreliable and seldom trust it to complete a transaction without something going wrong. It's worth keeping an eye on the shop counter while you're queuing for the post office, as they will often call you over if they're not too busy.

You'll also be able to find fresh ready-made foods, bread and milk, and a LOT of fizzy drinks and sweeties. It is therefore a great place to drop in to get those extra groceries, a bottle of wine, and some munchies before a house party or a nice night in. In this area, there is no shortage of big supermarkets, so although it's a lot like the local supermarkets in the city centre and the west end, it doesn't serve the same purpose. A great wee place to get your "bits" when you can't be bothered to wade through the crowds at the big supermarkets.

Having recently undergone a pretty drastic face lift, the Charing Cross Post office is now a rather pretty looking wee place which is bright, clean and fit for purpose. Friendly staff and ques that ain't as long as the Great Wall of China, make this a nicer experience than some of the other more central PO's. Oh, one more thing. I know somebody who actually gave birth to her second kid right there in the very post office. That was about 9 years ago and the staff still remember who she is...thats just cool.

There are several windows so multiple customers can be served at once and I've never been in with fewer than two of these running. The shop sells standard convenience store items as well as anything you might need in a post office, including stationary, bubble wrap, boxes and packaging. It's spacious and well laid out so that even when there are a lot of customers in the branch, it isn't difficult to get around and it doesn't feel over crowded. The staff are helpful and polite and are happy to make suggestions or give advice if you need it. I especially like that there's a large poster on the wall with a little Charing Cross history on it. That seems like a nice touch and I was tempted to stop and read it but, thanks to how efficient the staff are, I didn't have a long enough wait. Only two things prevent this branch from getting five stars. The first is that it doesn't have an ATM, which I've seen in other branches and I feel like the have space for. The second is that the opening hours are a bit limited - they're only open 07:30-17:30 Monday-Friday. Staying open just an hour later, or opening for a few hours on Saturdays would making using this branch far more convenient.

They came up when I searched, their prices were reasonable and so I entrusted them with collecting 5 boxes from me (Glasgow South Side) and taking them to Glasgow's East End, same day. I actually had no idea how much that service would cost but was impressed when the price came in at £23 for small van (other options are bike or big van). I booked for collection at 9am and the guy showed up about 10 minutes early. He was super friendly and chatty (more than most couriers) and was impressed by my laziness when I had kept the boxes in the car (meaning he didn't have to lug them down the stairs). Just over an hour later I got a beep on my phone & email to say the boxes had been delivered. I'd normally do that kind of delivery myself but from now on I'll definitely consider getting these guys as their price was so reasonable and the service was so easy to use. Happy days.

Paperchase was a delightful store, filled with interesting things, from a collection of mini erasers, shaped in so many different styles. Pens of every color and style, pencils with crowns at the tops, and of course the greeting card collections. I loved Paperchase when it was a wee section of Borders bookshop. I mourned for its loss when Borders disappeared from Buchanan Street and Glasgow Fort. But there are not enough words for me to convey the strength of my passion for this muckle shine to all that is stationery. This one has the unique selling point of being on Union Street and being pretty big, though not as big as the one on Sauchiehall Street which boasts being the biggest in Europe, for better or worse. There's some obscurities in here in the form of children's toys from trends 5 years ago, spraypaint and cheap stationary right through to general madness that is surely never bought by anyone? Who knows. It's decent for bits and bobs, but be warned, it's not so easy to find what you're looking for and it's often mobbed. Everything costs a pound in here. Just to clarify that.
