Holt's family moved from Shellman, Ga. to Miami in 1953. He grew up in Miami's Overtown and attended Dunbar Elementary School. At Booker T. Washington Jr. and Sr. high schools, he excelled in football, and in Track & Field, and especially in the sprint dashes. Holt ran the 100-yard dash in 9.5 seconds and as a result of his speed and dedication to the sport, he won many first-time honors. In 1960, he became the first African American athlete allowed to compete in Age Group Track & Field competitions against whites in South Florida, while running for the Florida Athletic Club. In 1961, Holt also became the first African American to make the All-Dade County High School Track Team and was recognized as one of the fastest runners in the world. He won an athletic scholarship to Grambling State University in Louisiana, where he competed against some of the best-known sprinters in the world, athletes such as: Bob Hayes, the 1964 Olympic Champion and the World's Fastest Human; Jim Hines, the 1968 Olympic champion; Olympians Charlie Green, Mel Pender, George Anderson, Stone Johnson and Richard Stebbings; and in 1964, He competed in the United States Olympic Trials. In 1965, he graduated from Grambling State and returned to Miami. In 1967 - 69, Jesse played for the Oakland Raiders and the Boston Patriots of the American Football League.

Along with his partner Jim Allison, he developed automobile lights based on acetelyene gas and the men millionaires in 1917 when they sold their Prest-O-Lite company. The partners went on to found the Indianapolis 500 Speedway and the Lincoln Highway. On a vacation to Miami in 1910, Fisher saw the potential in the swampland that ran between Miami and the ocean. Along with John S. Collins and the Lummus Brothers, Fisher was a founder and developer of Miami Beach. In 1913 he built the first luxury hotel in the area followed shortly after by the Lincoln Road shopping district. Fisher built a street car connection to Flagler's railroad so he could develop the area. He invested in infrastructure and set Miami Beach on the path to be the tourist destination it is today. On April 10, 1941 the citizens of Miami dedicated a memorial to Carl G. Fisher. The memorial features a bronze bust of Fisher, wearing his floppy hat, glasses, and smiling. Fisher was known for his trademark glasses. He suffered from severe astigmatism, which resulted in difficulty paying attention in school, headaches, eyestrain, and blurred vision. The vision problem was so bad that he ended up quitting school at age 12. The inscription on the monument reads: "Carl Graham Fisher - he carved a great city out of a jungle". The memorial is located in Fisher park at the corner of Alton Road and Lakeview Drive. Fisher Park also has a recently renovated 2-5 year old and 5-12 year old covered playground with a poured rubber surface. The playground has a back to nature theme. Play equipment includes a tree house, education tree area, dragonfly seesaw, and mushroom spinner. The park also has an open space with large tree for shade and benches. The park is open Monday - Sunday; Sunrise to Sunset.

Henry Flagler brough his Florida East Coast Railway from West Palm Beach into the area now known as Kendale Lakes in 1903. In 1926 a hurricane devastated the area plunging it into an economic depression. The New Deal Program created by President Roosevelt helped to provide work and many CCC workers built structures all over Miami Dade County. During WWII Kendale Lakes remained largely rural as the rest of Miami sprang up. In the 1970's and 80's it was considered a bedroom community with homes owned by doctors and lawyers. Today Kendale Lakes is a well-loved suburban community with excellent schools and beautiful parks like this one. Kendale Park has a large open area for walking your dog, play, and exercise. A paved walkway winds through the park and in the center of the park is a playground and outdoor exercise equipment. This is the perfect place for people living in the community to enjoy the outdoors without having to leave the neighborhood. Anyone looking for a larger park with more amenities can avail themselves of the vast nearby Kendall Indian Hammocks Park.

The large playground in its center, emphasizes that this park is mainly for children, parents, or those out for a leisurely stroll. There are signs around that say on Friday evenings, a family movie is shown in the park, but since I have never attended any of these events, I cannot be certain as to how many people attend these events and how crowded it gets. But on a typical day or night, the park is mostly empty, and those benches under trees makes you just want to sit down and watch the day dissipate into the night.

There is a boat ramp people can use to access the lagoon. Other park amenities include a community center, bike racks, picnic tables, pavilions, and a playground. Right now the park is a bit of a mess with fences up for construction. The park is scheduled to receive new restrooms, renovation of the concrete boat ramp and floating dock, renovation of the sidewalks and the stationary dock, and renovation of the parking lot. Once the construction is finished I have no doubt that this will be a five star park.

Paraiso Park is a .6-acre acre waterfront park in the Edgewater neighborhood of Miami. The park was created by the development firm Related Group who built the small park for the city in 2019 in exchange for closing NE 31st Street to allow construction of the new district. While it is a City of Miami park, it is maintained by the Paraiso District. There are approximately 7,000 residents living within a 10 minute walk to the park. While this is a park primarily used by area residents anyone is free to use it. Parking for Paraiso Park can be difficult to find but I found a metered spot a couple of blocks down the street. The main draw of this park is the stunning view of Biscayne Bay with a wide brick bay walk. The walkway is part of the Biscayne Line, a 10-mile waterfront promenade connecting Edgewater in the north with downtown Miami in the south. Next to the park and connected by the bay walk is the restaurant Amara at Paraiso, where diners can enjoy outdoor seating with bay breezes. Other park features include a popular dog park, public art, a children's playground with rope climber, benches, water fountain, and an exercise area with three Kompan Fitness Zone machines. I was really impressed by how much half an acre can hold while making the most of the breath taking view of Biscayne Bay.

You wouldn't know it at first glance. It looks like another well-manicured park with banyans throwing shade and benches full of locals scrolling their phones. But scratch the surface, and you find the bones of George Merrick's original Coral Gables dream. This was one of the first public gathering spaces Merrick laid out in the 1920s, back when he was building his "City Beautiful" with Mediterranean arches, fountains, and bougainvillea climbing like nature's graffiti. Ponce Circle Park was his town square, his living room, the place where his grand experiment in urban planning could breathe. It's history hidden in plain sight, smack on Ponce de Leon Boulevard, where old Florida ambition met the Spanish fantasy Merrick peddled to investors. Over the years, it's been everything from a quiet neighborhood lawn to the stage for farmers markets, festivals, and concerts. Coral Gables residents grew up chasing lizards here, picnicking here, staging community drama productions here. The banyan trees standing guard are older than half the buildings in Miami. They've seen hurricanes, weddings, protests, and more first dates than Tinder. What I love about it is the scale. In a city where everything screams bigger, newer, taller, Ponce Circle Park whispers. It's human-sized. You can sit on the grass and hear the jazz spilling out of Miracle Mile, or wander the farmer's market in winter and pretend you live in some Mediterranean village instead of hurricane alley. He placed it in the Crafts Section of town. The park was designed to showcase the craftspeople of Coral Gables, potters, sculptors, artists, and furniture makers. Studios were planned for the park with the artists living nearby in the surrounding residential section. Merrick's vision was never fully realized but the open space remained in the heart of the downtown. On November 8, 1994, the Coral Gables City Commission renamed the park Fred B. Hartnett Ponce Circle Park. Fred B. Hartnett (1901-1995) was a Coral Gables Commissioner and a former mayor of Coral Gables (1955-1957). He moved to Coral Gables from New York in 1925 and was an active civic participant in the formation of the city. Among his many accomplishments, he was a founding member of the Church of the Little Flower, the Coral Gables Jaycees, and the Country Club of Coral Gables. Today George Merrick would be surprised by the towering buildings and construction that have sprung up around his little park. If you visit the today it park has a walking path, historical sign, markers, benches, and a fountain. There is open space to play and stage events. The City of Goral Gables is currently contemplating improvements to the park.

It was the place where Henry Flagler's black railroad workers lived while building the infrastructure of Miami. Overtown is the second oldest neighborhood in Miami. During the 1920's, it was home to D.A. Dorsey, one of the first black millionaires in the south. After WWII it became the epicenter of black culture and was known as the Broadway of the South. Many famous entertainers stayed here when performing in Miami like Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, and Nat King Cole. In the 1950's, the area suffered an economic decline and in the 1960's many residents were displaced by the construction of I-95. Almost 40 percent of the people live in poverty but there is hope. I see a lot of neighborhood improvements and new businesses are opening like the world class restaurant Red Rooster, Overtown. Henry Reeves Park is named in honor of Henry Ethelbert Sigismund Reeves was born on November 16, 1882 in Author's Town, San Salvador in the Bahamas. After moving to Miami he was the publisher of the Miami Times, the oldest and largest black-owned newspaper in the southeast of the United States. For over 80 years the newspaper gave a voice to the African American Community through the Miami Times. Henry Reeves Park recently received a brand new play ground in December of last year. Using money from the Miami Forever Fun bond, the outdated 20 year old playground was replaced with rubber surfacing, shade structure, swings, interactive features, and play equipment for kids of all ages. The new playground equipment is part of the revitalization of the community. In addition to new play equipment the park also has open green space, outdoor fitness equipment, a basketball court, picnic pavilions and grills. After school programs and camps for kids are offered at the Culmer Community Center next door.
