Theatre at St. Michael's (TASM) was a game changer for us. My 9-year-old liked the idea of going…read moreto camp at his school because it was familiar. Then the drop-off/check-in happened. He said to me, "It's... all... girls." Panic set in. I convinced him to give it a try. When I picked him up later that day, he said, "Best... camp... ever!" That carried on for the full three weeks, concluding with an incredible play where the students created a whole musical from scratch... plot, music, words, sets, choreography - everything. The counselors are there help them with each piece. That was summer of 2022. It was the best three weeks of his life. He had us sign up for TASM in 2023 - this time doing the musical and Shakespeare. (What 10-year-old learns Shakespeare?!?!) Again, it was the best five weeks of his life. His younger brother just became eligible and did the "techies" version. That's where they create the sets, run the lighting, sound, and all those behind the scene things. He's hooked as well and will be signing up next year.

Theatre by the Sea is a jewel. This small venue in the Matunuck section of South Kingstown presents…read more4 shows per summer, plus a few daytime family shows, and we have always had a great experience here. From strolling through the gardens before the show, to sipping a drink at the outdoor bar, to the show itself, the whole Theatre by the Sea experience is lovely from start to finish. There is also a bistro where you can enjoy dinner, but we have yet to experience it. We most recently saw "Always" (the Patsy Cline story). The acting was fantastic, and the singing voices of the two leads was top notch. Last year we saw Beautiful, the Carol King story and again, the talent was incredible. Our first show at Theatre by the Sea was Mary Poppins, and it was so much fun watching Mary fly over the audience with her parrot head umbrella in hand. We opt for orchestra seats whenever possible and have always been able to see the show weel from the floor. We have sat in the balcony before, but once you get beyond the first two rows of balcony seating, it is difficult to see over the heads of the people in front of you. We love it there and I hope that once you visit Theatre by the Sea, you too will be captivated by this venue's charm and talent, and you will find yourself returning there over and over again.

Its tough to review improv because the cast and material are always changing. I remember seeing…read moreImprov Jones about 8 years ago and thought it was great. However, a recent show I went to was cringe-worthy. Out of 4 performers it seemed like one completely lacked a sense of humor, another wanted to be the center of attention and would do anything to get there, one knew they were bombing, and the last girl was pretty funny. Due the nature of long form improv as opposed to the more common type of improv they got stuck with terrible audience suggestions that they had to use for an hour. Note to performers- next time an audience member suggests a character that has an obsession with clocktowers...keep asking for suggestions. The performance was bad enough that my friends and I didn't even feel like continuing our night afterwords. One of the exchanges between two of the performers lasted about 10 minutes and was so bad and lacking laughs that I almost felt bad for them. The girl in this particular scene about a mutual love of clocktowers knew that they were going down in flames. I must give the guy in that scene credit though, anyone who's job it is to make people laugh who fails to do that even once during the course of an hour yet continues to get up in front of crowds deserve at least some praise for guts.

The Gingerbread Lady is set in the 1970s and portrays a mother trying to overcome her alcohol addiction with the help, or hindrance, of her dear friends. The directing was superb, the acting was incredible with just the right mix of "oh my god, how could she do that" and "oh my god, that's hilarious". I've enjoy many shows performed by the talented actors at Your Theatre and this is just another piece in their community theatre repertoire. As previous reviewers have stated, the building currently being utilized is not the best acoustically and seating is a big difficult. The use of risers for the back rows has made a HUGE difference in visual lines, however. And the building is old...floors creak...but if that's the worst that can be said about it, I'm okay with it. They are in the process of procuring a new venue. You can read about it on the Your Theatre webpage and facebook page and in the Standard Times! What a treasure this new space will be!
