Not at all what I was expecting, but great fun nonetheless. Logistics: Parking wasn't too bad, there are lots adjacent to the theater that offered free parking within walking distance. The indoor theater offers a small snack and beverage area featuring quirky, on-theme cocktails based on the show experience. We were greeted warmly and checked in quickly by theater staff. Seating can be a challenge because it's an intimate setting with first come, first serve arrangements. The staff is clearly well-versed in getting ticket holders settled in and scoping out extra seats for standby seating. I consider this a small, quaint community theater with an array of unique players/cast members. I went to see Into the Woods and cackled all night at the high energy performance. The acoustics are phenomenal because Red Riding Hoods screams rang in my ears long after she stopped yelling. I had never even heard of the Contemporary Theater Company, but the Josh Farley magic show kept coming up in my Facebook feed, and this is where the show was, so it brought me here. While the show was good, not great, the venue itself is a very intimate venue, probably only holds about 100 people, and is very cozy and well lit. Staff was great, and there is a small waiting area in the lobby. Public parking is ample, and in a couple lots nearly adjacent, and the venue itself has a small parking lot. There are also a couple of restaurants and an ice cream shop nearby as well. I had planned on grabbing a couple slices from NY Pizza beforehand, but they were closed due to staffing issues, nonethless the theater is great, and I'd be interested in checking out a future show there. read more

We were gifted two free tickets to a pre-showing of their new improv "Who Done it' which is a very silly, sometimes chaotic, often hilarious show that changes with each telling. At intermission the audience gets a chance to vote on who they believe 'did it' and the actors play out that scenario in the second half of the show. Seriously, some times it was just so funny you couldn't help but guffaw. Very un-ladylike. Seating has been updated since we last visited the inside theater. The seats are now permeant, cushy seats, where as they were stackable, moveable chairs in the past -The one's they now use in their outdoor theater, that we have also visited over the past few years. They have a limited amount of parking directly around the building and there are public lots on either side of the building, free of charge. A few spots are also available roadside, so plenty of space. A small bar is open during events where you can get a cocktail, water or soft drinks. Two public restrooms are clean and accessible. Tickets are reasonably priced and if you are in a tight spot and need a discount, they have your back. They also accept tax deductible donations as they are a non-profit, community theater. We have attended plays here as well as festivals held outdoors during warmer weather. Both the plays and the festivals are a lot of fun. Highly recommend. read more

We recently attended a play at this theater and we loved how cozy and friendly the staff were. Parking was easy.....right outside the front entrance or on the street. We were delightfully surprised about the quality of the acting and the set decor of the play. This is a nice neighborhood theater for those in the South County area. I recently discovered this cute local theatre through a yelp giveaway for 2 tickets to this show. I came with my daughter. Parking was easy, big parking lot right next to the small local theatre. It was definitely a cozy feel inside. It was a small cute environment. It seemed like alot of people that were there go pretty often. I am glad and grateful I got to attend this show. It was about 2 hours long and the actors were great! Very impressed about being able to hold a British accent for so long! Lol The theatre had a bathroom and a small refreshment area. They had a good variety of local alcoholic beverages. They also had regular local crafted soda and seltzer. Bravo Contemporary Theater Company bravo!!! If you are looking for an intimate location to watch a bit of theater and for a standing ovation look no further than this location! I was fortunate to score a a pair of tickets for the opening weekend of Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley (thank you Yelp Elite Squad and CTC) and was thrilled with the performance with the comfy atmosphere of this treasure tucked away in Wakefield. To be honest have been to Wakefield handful of times and didn't even realize this was there to enjoy. Needless to say I will be back for future shows here as I expand my exploration into all Wakefield and RI has to offer! There is ample parking, be it street or the public lot adjacent to the venue. The small seating area puts you almost quite literally on the stage during the engagement without a bad seat in the house. The staff is very welcoming, plenty of drink items and quality snacks at the bar to enjoy prior or during intermission. While the CTC may be small in stature, they have a lot of heart and any show makes for a memorable evening to enjoy! For Miss Bennet in particular, don't miss it! Found myself laughing along with fellow audience members as we continued on with Jane Austen's Pride & Prejudice journey. The cast does an amazing job conveying the blend of romance and humor via the strong woman at the center of this story. An added bonus was helping to decorate that infamous Christmas Tree during the intermission as well. One really feels they are part of the show here! Bravo CTC, to both cast and crew, bravo! What a great way to kick off the holiday season! We won tickets through Yelp to catch "Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley," a fun production with witty writing and very lovable characters. The performers were incredible on opening night, with each actor delivering humor and charisma every time. The space itself was very cozy, and the set design got us right into the Christmas mood and the world of the characters. Though this was quite the hike for us (coming from northern RI), it was such an honor to watch talented folks do their thing and celebrate the holiday season with them. 11/10 production, and I'd love to return for another show here at the Contemporary Theater Company - very welcoming staff, and the location is tucked into a cozy part of Wakefield with a true Hallmark vibe! read more

One show later and I now have season tickets for 2026 - it was that good! I won two ticket to see Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley (thank you Yelp Elite and CTC). We purchased an additional ticket for my brother to also attend. Although I could afford to pay the $35 ticket, I think its incredible that they have tickets for cheaper if you can't afford it, but would still like to watch it. The show was for 7 pm, and we arrived around 6:38 to the spot, but didn't actually walk in until around 6:45 after we figured out the parking situation. They do have a small lot by the theater, but I also think they have public parking close by along with street parking. When we walked in, we went to claim our tickets which was a very easy process (I dont think they have a digital ticket option). They do have a little bar with alcoholic and non alcoholic beverages (i.e., beer, cocktails, hot chocolate, soda, water). I wish they had snacks to munch on like popcorn or chips, but I do understand it can get messy. There are also two bathrooms, with about 2 stalls each. The theater is small and very intimate which I personally like, and a result, there is no "bad" seat. The show itself was very good, and so were the actors. I really felt like I traveled back in time with them. During the intermission, they let us help with decorating the tree on stage, and at the end of the show they selected one winner to get free tickets to a future show. We were immediately greeted as we entered. There is a great bar set-up just inside the foyer area as well as restrooms. The theater is a lovely space with comfortable seating and you feel like you are part of the setting. The evening we attended was amazing! The entire cast was phenomenal! Set decor was lovely. Unfortunately, it was nearly impossible to hear what the actors were saying. They did not have microphones and did not speak clearly or loud enough. They faced one small p portion of the audience, who could hear them and laughed a lot. The rest of us sat there, straining to understand what was going on. At intermission, some people in our section actually left, disgusted that they could not figure out what was going on or being said. It was a frustrating experience and not r joys le, at all. They need to upgrade their sound system, badly! I would not return there, under the present situation. read more

Went here for an improv murder mystery show for Halloween with my fiancé and our HEMA club friends. It was a fun night where costumes were encouraged. There is a small bar that serves beer, wine, and other refreshments. The show was so hilarious and interactive. In the beginning the audience got to pick the murder weapon. Then halfway through the show the murderer is chosen based on votes by the audience counted during intermission and the actors improv their way through the last half the show to make it work. As a theatre person, I am always looking to support local theatre and attend as many performances in Rhode Island as I can. I have to say that out of all of the smaller theatre companies in Rhode Island, The Contemporary Theater Company consistently hits it out of the park with performances time and time again. Because of its convenient location in the downtown area of Wakefield, Rhode Island, you can easily get a great meal nearby before or after the performance as well. No trip to the CTC is complete without a post-theater meal with friends at neighboring Mews Tavern where we discuss the merits of the play! #theatrekidlife Every show I've seen here, from the gut bustingly comedic "A Flea in Her Ear" to the darkly dystopian drama "The Pillowman", has been excellent. They also do weekly improv shows on Friday evenings, usually following the Friday night show and starring some of the cast members. It can be fun to see a show and then see the same actor again doing a completely different thing an hour later, especially if the mainstage show is a drama. Just goes to highlight how versatile and talented the folks that perform here are! Ticket prices are reasonable, and way cheaper than some of the professional theaters nearby. They also do free shows in the summer outdoors on their patio on Wednesday and Sunday evenings, and those are always fun and usually of the Shakespearean persuasion. The CTC offers a robust selection of classes in directing, improv, and more for those who wish to hone their skills or simply pick up a new hobby. I went to see Micetro Improv with a friend, just to check out what it was all about. The show was hilarious! We loved the diversity in age of the actors onstage: this company includes everyone, whether they be millennial or baby boomer. The vibe and atmosphere is warm and inviting: the actors clearly know one another well, and there's a friendly, familial vibe you get here that you can't find anywhere else. Support local theater, support this company. If you do, you'll be in for a night of great laughs, great drinks, and great acting. read more

I have seen several plays here and have been impressed by this company's refreshing originality. "The Italian Wife" was hilarious and tragic by turns and always engaging. The men's parts were played by women and all the parts were interchanged among the actors. The acting, as always was top-notch as was the whole production. After seeing the play, I read the book and found that the screenplay was true to the book. I have also seen CTC's productions "The Glass Menagerie," The Gift of the Magi," Waiting for Godot," and "The Assassins," to name a few. I am also a subscriber to the Gamm Theater in Pawtucket and give them both 5 stars. read more

Sweeney Todd was better at the Contemporary Theater than the movie version. Whodunit, the all improvised show with a new murderer/victim was not only entertaining but also so cleverly developed and executed (pardon the pun). The Friday evening Improv "Micetro" is fascinating. I couldn't be more delighted in having this gem of a theater in my backyard. You will not be disappointed. AND it's affordable! read more

Went to Micetro Improv in 2015. Had about 2-3 laughs. A year passed and, like having a baby, you forget about the pain and decide to try it again. Went to Slamming Doors, an entire improvised play. I thought maybe the play format would give more structure and possibly, more than 3 laughs. Audience given a choice between France or England for setting. Picked France. No attempt made at French accents, except for one pitiful attempt that was Cockney English. Never mind the man/servant who was really a woman and the woman librarian who was really a man. In this LGBT world, no one knew if you could laugh or not at anything they said! Overall insipid. Most of audience laughing here and there, but my wife and I sat there horrified at the banality. Left at first intermission. Like the Raven...Nevermore. read more

This is truly a neighborhood gem with 8-10 main stage shows annually, Improve on Friday nights , acting, directorial and set design classes. Summer camps happen for all ages. During the Summer there is Jazz on the patio on Mondays, and Shakespeare every Wednesday and Sunday evening all under the stars with donations accepted. Not to be missed is "Wakefield Idol" which begins its 6th season in January featuring local talent for a 12 week period on Thursday nights culminating in the finale with winners taking home cash prizes donated by local businesses. Additionally the Theater sponsors several events at the Towers in Narragansett such as the Masquerade Ball and Christmas Gala. We bought a membership last December which includes 4 main stage shows and two improv shows. I HIGHLY recommend it. It is worth every penny. read more

We went to see "All's Well that Ends Well" this summer, and will see "Imogen" tonight. This rarely performed Shakespearean play was done with wit, and verve, and we have rarely had such a lovely night watching an outdoor performance. Kudos to the cast, and best of luck.
