My better half had found Kate on Instagram and liked what she saw. She showed me and I genuinely liked some of the pictures. The pictures were...better. Had more of a real feel to them. Not that "here we are, oh so happy, rainbows and sparkles" type stuff you see almost everywhere. It seemed like *gasp* folks were actually having a good time. So she convinced me to line up a date for a one hour shoot, to look semi-presentable (coastal mountain town chic?) and then work got in the way. Kate was contacted and immediately rolled with the punches. We rescheduled and on the second try we met her. Kate is definitely someone who is engaging, sincere, makes you feel comfortable, knows how to capture the candid and staged moments, and has an innate understanding of how the whole session needs to flow. At one point our baby son decided he'd had enough of all the action and needed to be breastfed. Right then and there. So we plopped down, freed the nipple, and he was fed. Kate took some cool pics of that too and you know what? It was so natural and sweet...we'll cherish that moment for life. Time flew by and within a little over an hour we were done. She'd managed to take wonderful pictures of us as a family, including our four-legged beast, and individual ones of us each with our son. To say that I'm a tough one to convince to spend free time getting pictures taken would likely be an understatement but I'm now firmly onboard with Kate's methodology and would do it again. We have worked with many family portrait photographers over the years. Some have been better than…read moreothers, Serendipity Photogenics was one of the least professional and most disappointing experiences we have ever had. Everything was fine and fairly satisfactory before and during the shoot. We were able to schedule the date/location easily. Communication was a bit slow, but alright. The shoot was fun, and Kim and Scott were great with the kids. We were disappointed that photos of the kids alone were not taken until we requested at the end of the shoot, which by that time with three cranky kids did not work. I chalked that up to my failure to make that a priority shot ahead of time. Two days after the shoot, I contacted them to find out when we could expect to receive the images. We were told within two weeks via a USB sent in the mail. Sneak peeks of our shoot were posted on Facebook shortly after, so we knew editing was taking place and we waited. Two weeks later we still had not received anything. I emailed them only to be told they didn't have our address on hand. I provided that, but received no confirmation that they had received it and would mail out the images. Two more weeks later we still had not received anything. I emailed and asked if they had received the address. No response. A few days later I emailed again to see if anything had happened. I received no response until two days after that last email, only to be told that they would deliver the images in person to save money on shipping. We arranged to meet in two more days on Friday. Friday came and she did not show up. No email. No phone call. No text. I posted publicly on their Facebook page expressing hope that they were alright since I hadn't heard from them. They deleted my post within minutes and emailed with the explanation of a family emergency and an upcoming funeral. I emailed back explaining that I understand emergencies, but that this did not explain the previous weeks of delay and poor communication. I requested a full refund for our session fee. They processed the full refund within 6 hours. So at least the refund was prompt. I have no issue accommodating someone when emergencies arise. I understand this happens. As a working mom of three kids I know things come up, stuff gets delayed, etc. But this is no excuse for the disrespect and complete lack of communication we had with these photographers. If the pictures didn't turn out well, I would have accepted that. If they had been lost, fine. If they really did have a rough 6 weeks of family drama and emergencies, then I would have been understanding. However, I find it unlikely that life was as hard as they claim, as they continued to shoot sessions, edit pictures, and post about these on their Facebook page the entire 6 weeks that we were waiting for our images. I would not recommend these photographers. The only acceptable thing was the quick processing of our refund. And at least now I can go and book family pictures with someone else. Unfortunately, though, with this timing, we won't have any family pictures to use on Christmas cards this year.
