I was referred to Dr. Huffman by my PCP, Elizabeth Matorana, PA over 5 years ago. I have been impressed and happy from my first visit to all my other visits, over the years. Dr. Huffman and his staff, Dawn and Sarah are professional, compassionate and efficient. He listens and spends the time needed during an office visit. Over the years I've had numerous epidural injections and nerve blocks, and Dr. Huffman he was always professional and gentle with every treatment received. Dr. Huffman never rushed me into surgery but always worked with me and took the time to explain the results of all my diagnostic tests. Dr Huffman's staff member was very very rude to both me and my primary care doctor's staff. I can't comment on Dr Huffman since I didn't meet him. His staff member ( I was told there are 2) was so condescending, unprofessional, and nasty to both of us that I decided (with my primary care doctor's blessing), to go to Golden State Ortho in Walnut Creek, which offers a very professional and friendly environment, staff, and physicians. I have been a clinical nurse specialist for a long time and have only been treated like this once before within the same practice/ Napa Valley Ortho/ back in 2019. I was going to give Huffman a try since he is a different type of specialist than the one I saw in 2019. However, even though Walnut Creek is more inconvenient than Napa, I'm very happy with Golden State Ortho. I needed another surgery on my back again in March of 2023, this time a bigger surgery L3-L5 on my back. Dr. Huffman spent 3 hours doing this and it was very sizeable unlike my first one. I had a microsurgery back operation for L5-S1 in August, 2022. After waiting to see if the good results stayed good, I have to say they are excellent! The epidural steroid shots had stopped working as had the physical therapy, both of which I thought were excellent care. I reached a point where Dr Huffman said I could have an operation, or adjust to having pain. I've been seeing Dr Huffman for my back for 2 yrs now. I have 3 other back surgeries (not by Dr H) over 25yrs ago and as they said I would in 20yrs I would need another surgery because the upper spine would become herniated over the years. So two years ago went to Dr H he suggested I get an epidural and see how I did. Well it was great my shot lasted 4 mo. So I've been going back every 4mos until the last two shots only lasted a month. So we decided to do the surgery which is scheduled for Oct 2, 2017. I very excited. DR H is a very kind and understanding Dr. I would not have anyone else do this surgery. I met with Dr J Huffman just over a week ago and I am pleased and impressed. The front office staff have been highly professional, prompt and friendly. His medical assistant Sara is outstanding and on top of it and knows her job. Tina is exceptional as well. Dr Huffman performed a miracle on me. With nerve pain from spodylolisthesis we started injection therapy which worked great. After some time the nerve pain from 'spondy' became intolerable leading to spinal fusion surgery. Incredibly I was walking around post-op so surprised not to feel the debilitating nerve pain. If you need the expertise of an outstanding spinal surgeon, Dr. Huffman is the person to trust with your health. I had been suffering debilitating leg pain as a result of a spinal compression. I had tried everything short of surgery to get some relief, but nothing helped. I had been told that back/spinal surgery was risky and that it would be my last resort. Think twice before going there. My life essentially ended ten years ago, after Huffman's "magic". Worst decision of my life, I have perhaps two days a week I can function, but never to the extent I could before. Before the surgery I was athletic and in great shape. When things went wrong in rehab as an example, I was not allowed to see him before the next scheduled appointment etc. Pick a Md. that knows what to do and will listen to you when things go wrong. This was my first appointment here and as such I met with his PA, Mary Clause. She took her time and answered al my questions seemingly not minding when I'd interrupt to get clarification on something. I recorder our meeting with her happy permission, something that other directors have flatly not allowed. That had some interesting possibilities for my back and we're going to collect some more data in the form of a special CT scan and then make the best decision. I decided to see Dr. Huffman (Napa Valley Orthopaedics) because physical therapy and injections did not lessen my pain and my sciatica was getting worse. After a consultation and review of my MRI, Dr. Huffman performed an outpatient minimally invasive surgery on me for a herniated disc. I was amazed when I woke up from the surgery and the sciatica pain was gone! I have been very satisfied with the office staff. They guided me through all of the pre-op scheduling and post-op activities. The follow up appointments with Mary Claus, Dr. Huffman's physician's assistant have been good and she has been helpful in answering all my questions. It has been two months since the surgery and I am sciatica free. I no longer need a cane or daily anti-inflammatory drugs. I highly recommend seeing Dr. Huffman and his staff. I am 24, I saw this doctor for a herniated disc that I'd had for 5 months. He looked at an mri that was 4 months old and came in and told me the same exact thing I had heard 4 months earlier which he read from the old Mri. I tried to tell him things had changed since then and told him about what had happened in the prior months and how the injury had progressed (I had reinjured it twice and it felt worse). He didn't really seem to listen and he told me the symptoms should go away soon. I called later after symptoms were not getting better but worse and told his assistant that I understand their perspective but I wanted to pay out of pocket for a new mri and have him and a different doctor look at it to be sure we knew exactly what was happening in my back. She told me he refused to order one and I tried to explain why I thought a current one might help but they said NO. It felt almost disrespectful that they wouldn't even allow me to pay for my own mri because they thought I didn't need one. They thought he knew for sure what was happening when really he was making a guess based off old and no longer relevant information. When I asked how they came to that conclusion, they said it was from the mri and it seemed like they didn't care what I thought. Communication and patient interaction was unacceptable. read more

I was in tremendous pain and went to Arizona to get help and relief. After looking at my MRI they suggested that I would be better off having the procedure performed in a hospital environment. Not knowing where to go I asked for a referral closer to home I live in Contra Costa County. A few days later I got a phone call and they referred me to Dr.Jason Huffman in Napa Ca. I made a appointment and he went over my MRI and medical records and suggested that I may consider minimally invasive surgery. We scheduled the surgery at Queen of the Valley Hospital In Napa. Was admitted to the hospital on a Monday and was released on Wednesday. Have not had any leg or back pain. Back to playing golf and I am very active. I highly recommend Dr. Huffman to anyone who may need to have their back looked at. I would recommend Dr. Huffman without hesitation. After suffering from back pain since my teen years, I've had two very successful spine surgeries that I would classify as life changing. Dr. Huffman is not quick to recommend surgery and only proceeds if he feels there will be a good outcome. His staff is wonderful and compassionate and his PA, Mary, is terrific as well. I had recurrent left thigh pain about 4 months after my left hip replacement. We had a difficult time figuring out where the pain was coming from. Dr. Mike Shifflett referred me to Dr. Huffman. He determined the source of the pain, stenosis of L4. We tried an epidural injection, which worked for a short period of time. I wanted to fix the situation if possible. Dr. Huffman explained the next step would be surgery. He explained the surgery, which was microsurgery and done through a microscope. It was amazing!!! I was seen as an out patient and when I woke up from the anesthetic, the pain was totally gone. Rehab was a long process but proved to be vital and made a big difference in my recovery. I am continuing the exercises and stretching and I am seeing continued improvement in my strength and movement. I had a herniated disk which caused me so much pain that I could not stand up straight, and trying to roll over in bed had me nearly screaming in agony. Dr. Huffman was wonderful. The first line of treatment was a steroid injection, which was horribly painful but fairly miraculous. Almost immediately, I could stand up straight and walk normally again. But I still needed a lot of pain meds, and Dr. Huffman said this particular type of hernia was unlikely to resolve itself, so we discussed surgery. He spent as much time as was needed to answer all my questions in a very thoughtful and considerate way. (When I asked if he would have this surgery, he said "I would already have had the surgery... But if it was my mother, who has fewer obligations, I would probably wait..." Ah, did I need to be reminded that I am probably his mother's age or older? But it made me laugh!). Eventually I did have the surgery, and though immediately after surgery I was again in excruciating pain, within a matter of weeks I was off all pain medications entirely. It is now a couple of years later and I still have a little bit of numbness in my left leg, but no pain. I am able to live a normal life again. Yay! Oh, and kudos to physician's assistant Mary, too... Wonderfully compassionate and competent. read more
