Mom had a successful back surgery and still go to the office for follow up appointments. June, 2025. Wow, surprised at only 3.7 stars on Yelp. I have always been satisfied with my visits and treatments for a herniated lumbar spine disk (it goes with an old fart age of 78). The every 3-4 months injections of epidural spinal injection of steroids is so far much better than spinal surgery. Kudos to Dr. Jason Huffman, and I thank my Primary Care Physician (PCP) Dr. Subhash Mishra for referring me to Dr. Huffman. While the first steroid injection was nothing short of miraculous, the subsequent injections make the pain tolerable. I can't possibly allow a family member to go to an office as unprofessional as this one is. When you call in and the answering machine tells you that they've got caller ID and not to leave more than one message. There's just something wrong with that office. My husband had a referral and I called to make his appointment and that was the message on the answering machine. I immediately turned around and called his primary care provider and had it changed to another office. I will take him to San Francisco before I will let him see anyone in that office. read more

First time here at this group Needed an orthopedic doctor to look at my hand From the very get go in completing the app application, speedy and easy desk check in, i I absolutely saw this place as a well~operated business !!! Jessica and and the Xray tech (I didn't catch her name) was quite cordial and pleasant . PA Sylvia came in to tell me that the doctor was running a bit behind ** no problem with that** she was to the point, knowledgeable with her quick assessment, I felt at ease . Sylvia displayed confidence and professionalism Dr Birkbeck is quite a nice doctor , too. I trusted him from the beginning, I was told by my other colleagues wonderful things about him (I used to work in the occupational health department @QVH back when I first arrived from Hawai'i) I'm quite fortunate in having dr Birkbeck in Napa The shot was painless... cryo and steroid! Let me start off by saying that Dr. Birkbeck, one of the doctors here is the best hand doctor in Northern California. The reason for a 3 star review on the office as opposed to the 5 star review on his Yelp page is because of the disorganization of the front office staff, which by the way are not directly connected to his staff as far as I could tell. Everytime you go, most people pay a copay. Make sure to get a receipt! I wasn't that smart. On top of that, I missed one appointment out of about 15 and they literally wouldn't let me reschedule until I drove from SF to pay them a cancellation fee. When I got there and expressed my frustration, I was told I could have paid on the phone...nice Lastly, and the strongest reason I would like to give them ONE star if the doctor and his medical staff weren't so great is that apparently I had an outstanding balance that nobody bothered to tell me about for X-rays that my insurance never covered. When I was finally told, I called two days later and paid it over the phone. You would have thought that one of the 15 times I was there someone might have mentioned that to me while I was paying them $25 per appointment. Nope. How did I find out that it wasn't fully paid? A collections agency called my JOB. Yup. The good news? I sent the collection agency a receipt for the amount that was paid BEFORE it was sent to collections and they apologized and fixed it. Get your stuff together people, you're giving the office a bad name! read more

My mom had an appointment with Dr. Diana today about her long-standing hip pain. I came here with her, while visiting from the DC area, at my mom's request b/c of what I do. My mom had an xray first, then spoke w/ a medical assistant (not to be confused with Physician Assistant), who took my mom's pulse and asked her a couple of basic questions. While we did wait for 45 minutes until we saw Dr. Diana, he turned out to be more than we expected and we weren't bothered by the wait. He was a slightly soft-spoken, very amicable, and polite gentleman who struck us both as a kind, intelligent, well-read and friendly surgeon. After his exam, he spoke w/ us for about 30 minutes, reviewing my mom's hip xrays with her, explaining the pathology and what it meant. He then discussed the possible surgery she would benefit from, including great details about risks, benefits, her likelihood of complications and his own complication rate- the latter of which isn't something all orthopods like to or willingly share. Overall, he put my mom (and me) at ease and amongst all the orthopaedic surgeons I have worked with (prob about 20-30 diff ones), I would rank him in my top 5 after just meeting him today. I don't think my mom would have any issues continuing to use Dr. Diana in the future nor would I hesitate to recommend his practice to anyone else. read more

I was referred to Dr. Daniel Birkbeck by my GP/Cardiologist for a 3x5x8 mm Mucous/Ganglion Cyst which had developed on the first knuckle of my right index finger. I'd proposed lancing it myself, but my doc jumped up n out of the exam room and returned with a print of an article with images of similar cysts and explained that most definitely I should NOT try treating it myself since that could result in more developing! And suggested he could refer me to an Orthopedic Surgeon who was qualified to do the necessary surgery to treat my condition. I Gratefully accepted. When I met with Dr. Birkbeck of the Napa Valley Orthopaedic Group, I was impressed by the large and competent offices! Then after X-rays had been taken I met with Dr. Birkbeck who CLEARLY seemed familiar with my condition and consented to remove it ASAP as I'd requested! Shortly afterwards I received a packet of several well organized instructions for our imminent surgery! I did my best to comply with all the Instructions and felt that I was going to be taken care of by an imminently competent and organized system! Since I live alone and have several deficits from an earlier stroke, I was comforted by this meticulous competency and all the gracious responses to my many questions and concerns! Once I'd arrived at the Outpatient Surgery Center on the morning of the scheduled procedure at QVMC I was hugely comforted by the professional competency of the whole facility and team!!! Now, a little while afterwards I'm delighted to report that the BEAUTIFUL stitches have been removed and I'm WELL ON my way to a RAPID n uneventful RECOVERY!!! I cannot say ENOUGH Good things about this office and the profound competency of that whole organization and group!!! I especially enjoyed the comfort and ease with which I was able to discuss my condition and concerns with Dr. Birkbeck and his team! read more

This office is awesome! From the receptionists, to the assistants, to the doctors, they are all extremely friendly! Dr. Huffman (who I have been seeing) is incredibly knowlegeable and personable. I normally hate doctors offices and sometimes get anxiety from them, but here you are put at ease from the start. I especially like that Dr. Huffman is very patient and truthfully answers ALL my questions. He is very conservative and is not a "cut happy" doctor. We tried everything we could for my slipped disc before opting for surgery. If you need an orthopedist in Napa Valley, don't waste your time anywhere else!! read more

This place is ridiculous. Got there at 12:30 for my grandfather's appointment and left at 3pm. All that was done was a bandage change and some photos. He never saw a doctor and pretty much has no idea what they are going to do with his injury. They "texted" the doctor and waiting for his response. Shouldn't they already know the course of action from the xrays? Why make an appointment If you cant even see a real doctor? We have yet to receive a call after being told they should have an answer yesterday. I bet they do this so they can bill more appointments to the insurance company. So now my grandfather is waiting for a call to see what they are going to do with a shattered finger. Probably will end up going somewhere else. read more

My surgeon is Dr. Jason Huffman and from start to finish I have to say that I would recommend Dr. Huffman to anyone with a back problem. The staff went above and beyond for me and my full lumbar surgery was successful and I've enjoyed a great recovery. Yes, sometimes I've had to wait a while to get in, but that's how it is and I bring a book or just mess around with my phone while waiting. This is hands down the most inept and unprofessional group of idiots I've ever had the displeasure of encountering. They put my epidural injection in the wrong spot causing a flare up in my back so bad i was prescribed Norco for the pain. They don't return phone calls about said injection and now they just sent me a letter saying i missed an appointment that i was never made aware of and i owe them a $25 missed appointment fee. I reluctantly pay it just so i can get my follow up appointment which was for tomorrow at 1:10 and the so called office manager called me first thing today to tell me she cancelled my appointment and told me she requested my adjuster finds me a new spinal surgeon. So basically they screwed a single dad out of money i didn't have to give and i made that clear to them just so they could play games. Very unprofessional. At least i won't have the displeasure of having this hack of a doctor go medieval on my back which would have resulted in me being paralyzed. The Napa Valley Orthopedics office does have issues given the number of patients it has to serve - there were moments when I waited a fair amount of time in the office or didn't receive a return phone call in a timely fashion. But I can say only extremely positive things about the medical care - I was treated by Dr. Birkbeck, who performed fairly delicate hand surgery with an outstanding outcome. Thoughtful, nice man who is clearly a very talented surgeon. His medical staff was very accommodating when I asked to have the surgery site looked at, and also very professional. So I give them very high marks for what really matters, the quality of care. read more

I was told to go to Dr. Birkbeck for my problem, and when I finally called he was on vacation. The receptionist immediately offered up a time with his PA, and got me in within a week, which was amazing, as I'd waited too long to call. When I met with Alexis Rockwell, the PA, she was great - very helpful and professional, but with a great personality and very pleasant to deal with. Same with the office staff...the receptionist was super nice and professional. Overall, a good experience and I'll go back to them in a heartbeat. read more

It took one month to get an appointment scheduled with a PA, not even a Dr. now I have to wait another month for the appointment date. 2 months since my first phone call to receive an actual time and day. I would get a call back only after many, many unanswered calls and messages left. I have an unusual, circumstance, so a little delay is understandable, but the follow up is horrible. I was told they would call me, never to receive a call. I made 4 trips to the office just to help expedite, which did nothing but frustrate me. They take a lot of lunches, breaks and time off at this office. No one is ever able to talk to you because they aren't there. They don't ever apologize, they don't seem to care, it's really a poorly run operation. The Drs are outstanding from a medical standpoint, but the mgmt, patient care, is absolutely horrible. read more

I have been a patient of Jason Huffman for almost four years. Dr. Huffman and his staff are professional, caring and always available if I have questions. I have always felt I was working with the best doctor possible to treat my injury. I suffered from significant back pain and recently underwent surgery performed by Dr. Huffman. While I'm still recovering I can say I no longer have any of the pain I experienced before my surgery. Dr. Huffman and team are very special. I would recommend them to anyone!! These people run a terrible office. I went for a follow up appt today and sat in the waiting room for an hour. I left the office but they refunded my copay and Dr Shifflet called me a few days later and apologized and gave me my MRI results. I have two active boys so we have been to this office many times. Once you get into see a Dr. you are good, The Doctors are good at what they do. The problem- Getting in to see them first of all. There are many names on the door to this practice but they have multiple locations and are not accessible. We have had to wait a week with a child who has a broken bone and is in pain! We were told to go to the ER- where we will spend thousands of dollars, and they will refer us back to NVO anyway! This is one problem with our healthcare system! If you do get an appointment be prepared to WAIT & WAIT! At least an hour to be seen, even it is a P/A. I am very unhappy with this practices philosophy and their lack of commitment to our Napa community! Our family finds that we will be either 1) Going to Kaiser, or 2) Leaving our Napa community to seek care elsewhere! It's very disappointing! I know a few of these Doctors in our community and I'm sad to seek care elsewhere, but I don't agree with how they are practicing medicine! read more

I had a torn lateral meniscus. Though the surgeon was great, the nurses were horribly rude, inconsiderate, and intolerant. I have never had such a negative experience at a professional service such as this. One nurse in particular completely dismissed my legitimate questions about medicine, then blamed me for not going to physical therapy, in which they called me 3 days ago (after my leg had healed). Yes, I think they dropped the ball on that one. Secondly, the receptionist told me my appointment was at 10:30 on the phone, then when I came in they said it was at 9:45 and the nurse proceeded to degrade me over the phone for not coming earlier. I wouldn't touch this place again with a ten foot pole, and I wanted to yelp this to prevent further people from having the same excruciatingly horrible experience. read more

I'm not sure what the problem is with this office, but the lack of follow -thru is appalling. Try to get someone to return your call or follow-up on test results. I realize that this is a very busy office, but a simple phone call would be much appreciated. I have been a patient in the past and everything went smoothly. Come on people, when patients are in pain and waiting for test results, 8 days is a long time to wait. My 93 year old mother fell and broke her wrist over the holiday weekend and the QVH ER Dr. said it was an extremely bad break and to follow up with Napa Valley Orthopedic that next week. I called Tues. late a.m. and spoke with a very nice lady named Armita who put me into Dr. Birkbeck's new patient intake voicemail. I received a call back that afternoon and after she checked with Dr. Birkbeck's assistant, Alexis, about my mother's condition, received a call back again very quickly and told to bring my mother in the very next day to see the assistant. From the moment we walked in the door, each and every staff member at the front desk was extremely considerate, efficiently fast with the paperwork and very kind. Alicia and Alexis tended to my mom with the utmost courtesy, compassion and respect and made her feel at ease, and were so very gentle in putting a new splint on her arm. Yes, we waited a bit in the exam room, but not that long, due to Alexis needing to put a cast on another patient, but most impressive was staff kept popping in every few minutes to let us know what was going on and to see if we were okay. I have nothing but great things to say about this medical office based on our first trip there. We have an appt. with Dr. Birkbeck next week and I'm hoping this positive experience will continue to be the norm. read more

In March of this year, I started to have significant lower back pain and severe sciatica in my right leg. Having had a lumbar microdiscectomy four years ago in another state, I knew what was going on - and I knew the likely prognosis this time around wasn't going to be good. I checked my insurance, researched Bay Area doctors and medical groups online, and determined I wanted to see Dr. Huffman at Napa Valley Ortho. I called for an initial appointment and was frankly surprised and relieved to get an appointment within two weeks to see Mary, Dr. Huffman's PA. The person handling this call was great - and just what you hope for when calling a practice you're not familiar with. When I went for that initial appointment I could still walk and was reassured by the attention, care and information I received from Mary and from Dawn, who supports Mary and also Dr. Huffman. Mary felt given my history, age and current symptoms, that an MRI was called for to confirm the problem. It was at this time I knew I had found the right medical group. (Prior to my previous surgery in 2012, I was put through months of severe pain to endure conservative treatments that did nothing. Only after I was forced to live for weeks on the floor of my home on morphine was I finally scheduled for an MRI. My first surgery came two days later). Soon after seeing Mary for my first appointment, I was struck by the same constant debilitating back and leg pain I had experienced in 2012. Within just 2 weeks of the onset of this constant pain I had a second appointment with Mary, an MRI and an appointment with Dr. Huffman. The MRI showed I had a severe herniated disc one level down from my previous surgery (Having multiple herniated discs is not, sadly, uncommon). I had my MRI at Sonoma Valley Hospital. Everyone involved with me and my treatment during this time - Mary, Dawn, Dr .Huffman, front desk staff and Napa Valley Ortho, the MRI tech at Sonoma Valley Hopsital - everyone was professional, highly skilled, efficient, pleasant and caring. Follow through was excellent and I was never let down. I was in agony, but I knew I had Dr. Huffman and his team in my corner. One week after the MRI I had a lumbar microdiscectomy as an outpatient at Sonoma Valley Hospital. Given my previous treatment and surgical experience, I don't think anything could have gone better for me as a patient. My experience at Sonoma Valley Hospital, just like at Napa Valley Ortho, was stellar. Pre and post op care was exactly what you hope for - and I have to state that staff at Sonoma Valley Hospital were outstanding. Dr. Huffman was gracious, took time to talk with me prior to surgery and gave me confidence for a good outcome. Immediately after surgery the pain was gone and I went home that afternoon. I was able to walk outside, slowly, the next day. Only 2+ weeks after surgery, I was able to take a trip out of state - and while I had to be careful, I was OK. I'm now almost two months out and my recovery has gone well. I've seen Mary and Dawn twice for follow up visits and it's a pleasure for my wife and I to see them both and to share how I'm doing. I know this is a long review, and it may seem a bit too good to believe, but my experience with Dr. Huffman, everyone at Napa Valley Ortho and Sonoma Valley Hospital was exemplary. I am lucky to have been able to access the care I received - and I'm grateful for it. I've read some negative reviews and know everyone has different experiences, but I would not hesitate one moment to recommend this skilled and caring group of medical professionals to anyone in need. read more
