Great response to a dental emergency - my wife was in the office the next day after calling in as a first time patient.

I needed a cap on my second to the last molar. While putting it in he cracked my last molar. Told him about it and he denied it then expected me to pay him to fix a perfectly fine tooth that he messed up. I got a better dentist to fix it. Wasted my time denying/canceling prior appointment with hygienist upon arrival at office. Made appointment previous day for 2pm for with hygienist for cleaning. Took several hours out of my afternoon to drive there and back. When i arrived and was seated was told did not have appointment with hygienist. No apology. Staff said office manager was not in that day and so I asked for them to call me. Never happened. I called back later in the week and was told office manager was still not there. I spent around $4,488 for dr Randall's services at Hawaiian Island Dental Office over the four months between July and October of 2019. This was with limited dental insurance coverage. First I got a cleaning and tooth whitening. The cleaning was free with my insurance and the whitening cost an additional $400. Next I got a full X-ray assessment; after which dr Randall asked me if I eat a lot of junk food, candy or soda. I told him I eat mostly organic with some sweets but I never drink soda. My treatment began with a crown on a root canal that a previous dentist had completed 7 years ago. Next, Dr Randall completed several small gum line fillings and a few bigger fillings. A few days latter, my left arm started feeling a president dull ache with weakness, this was followed by extreme shooting pain in my lower left jaw. I went back in and found out I needed a root canal on one of the teeth he had worked on. I got endodontic therapy (a root canal) on August 28th, on tooth number 18, but pain also seemed to be coming from #19. After the crown, this cost me about $2,200. The first crown was $881, so about $1,400 of my bills with him were for exams and fillings. After the second crown I got some filling on my upper front teeth. I immediately noticed intense pain when I tried to floss next to a tooth that he had just worked on. I went back to him to fix the problem and he filed down the filling, but this only slightly improved the problem. I went back a second time and he charged me for dabbing fluoride on the tooth, but this did not help. I did not show up to the last appointment I had at Hawaiian Island Dental. I think it was for an assessment of the previous work done. The receptionist called me asking why I did not show up and I told her that I was sick of constantly being at the dentist. She tried to reschedule me and I told her that I did not want another appointment at this time. She responded in a sassy tone "well, I guess we will see you whenever." Several months later, I began to have pain when chewing on the lower left side. I went to another dentist, Dr Thomas Atkin, and found out that there were air bubbles caught in the filling on molar #19 and also in the filling on my upper front tooth that caused pain when I flossed. He told my that "Raging Randall" is notorious for doing sloppy dental work and that he is also known for throwing angry fits, and objects, in front of his dental assistants. He also suggested that I was a bit young at 40 to have needed so many gum line fillings. He also told me that he needed to replace the filling on the molar in order for me to chew normally again, but there was a risk that I would need another root canal. I told him to go ahead with replacing both fillings and it worked out perfectly. I can now chew and floss normally. read more

My advice would be to listen to the negative reviews others have posted. This dentist is known for poor quality work AND what many don't realize is that they are having fillings replaced that don't need to be and that the insurance companies are being over charged (thus the patient also due to a larger co-pay) due to a tactic called up-coding. This is charging for a larger filling than which is actually being done. Patients don't realize this is going on except that they wonder why they have to pay so much more out of pocket than their previous dentist. If you a new patient there and wonder how come all of a sudden you have all these cavities and leaking fillings, go get a second opinion. read more

Now this "Jack" is a real "Weasel." I don't care that you work on models, politicians, and other well known people. How can it be possible that you charge $500 more for the same procedure? You are a "Weasel!" It would make sense if it was just a bit more, or if you were performing some type of witchcraft or voodoo on me. Maybe it's because that you live in the Princeville Resort that you have to charge so much just to probably keep up with your mortgage. I don't blame you. Your office etiquette is horrible and your staff is incompetent. read more

My experience was outstanding. His staff was very cooperative and friendly and I enjoyed chatting with them. Dr. Jaurequi was very thorough in his explanation and answered every question well. I was comfortable with the visit and, while no one looks forward to going to the dentist, his office made the process almost enjoyable. I thought his pricing was typical of the industry. My husband has been his patient for years and has had extensive dental work done. He told me that Dr. Jaurequi is innovative and always keeps costs down because of it. while on vacation in the Poipu Beach area of Kauai, my front tooth snapped off at the gumline. with another week of vacation, I knew I couldn't wait until I got home. I Googled dentists and called Dr Randall's office. I was pretty desperate and they found a way to get me seen the same day. Dr Randall was able to cement my tooth/crown back on in an hour my problem was solved. I can't thank him enough, and his staff as well. read more

Everyone is entitled to their own opinions. However, contrary to the reviews of others, I was very satisfied with the service I received from Dr. Jaurequi and his staff. As a retired Army colonel, I set high expectations of people, especially of those I choose to help with my health needs. I did not encounter any problems. The receptionist was very pleasant, the dental assistant explained the procedure very well, and Dr. Jaurequi was very thorough and compassionate. A few days following my visit, I received a phone call from Dr. Jaurequi to see how my recovery progressed. I would highly recommend Dr. Jaurequi ! read more

I needed to get to a dentist in a hurry because my crown broke, leaving me with a gap in the front of my mouth- what a bummer, especially while on vacation. I called every dentist on the island and no one was willing to squeeze me in for an emergency appointment. When I had just about given up, I found Dr. Jaurequi's listing online. I noticed his online reputation wasn't exactly stellar, but I was desperate. So when his office staff kindly said she could give me a same-day appointment, I didn't hesitate. I was pleasantly surprised to find every member of Dr. Jaurequi's staff was kind and helpful; especially when it came to verifying my Delta Dental health plan. I didn't have my card with me but, Pat and Jackie went the extra mile to figure out my plan and I only had to pay $50 for the x-ray, exam and repair of my crown. Another one of the dental assistants, Amber took me back and made sure I was comfortable. Dr. Jaurequi was kind and professional and knew exactly what needed to be done to repair my crown. His technique and bed-side manner were great and I was never in any discomfort. The whole experience was pleasant. It's a shame that mine is the only positive review on Yelp. I get the impression Dr. Jaurequi is probably working too hard to check up on his online reviews. Dr. Jaurequi seems to care about his patients and enjoy his work and he is not at all pretentious. His office was full of patients, some adults who needed more extensive work like root canals and implants and kids who were there after school to have their teeth cleaned. I'm so glad I found a dentist I can trust. I visit Kauai from California every year and will call him again when the need arises. read more

I saw Dr. Jaurequi for a number of years until I began to sense that enough things were "off" that I decided to go elsewhere for dental work. A couple of examples. A fixed lower retainer, which had been installed by a dentist in another state at least ten years previous, came loose. Dr. J replaced/repaired the retainer but it only lasted only a brief time (a week? a month?) before it came loose. Dr. J appropriately & nicely replaced/fixed it free of charge. Then this 2nd one came loose as well within a short period of time. When I went in yet again to have the 3rd retainer replaced/fixed, Dr. J did not speak to me the whole time he worked on me. Typically he was warm & talkative with me during my appointments but not this day. He appeared quite angry at me. (Please note that I am a gentle senior citizen who is not careless in how she eats or takes care of herself. It was quite unlikely that I did anything out of the ordinary for either of his two retainers to come loose/off. Was he really angry at me or was he angry at himself but took it out at me?). Another example. In discussing a procedure he said he didn't have a particular item which I felt would be appropriate to use. Then later in the same discussion he was talking about using this very item. When I confusedly asked him "I thought you said you didn't have this?" His reply was "Well, we just found it". The feeling that came with that comment was not convincing. Other things such as replacing his whole staff at once appeared odd to me. His quote for making a new removable retainer set seemed considerably high so I checked with another dentist. This other dentist's quote was at least $150 less.
