Before getting a quote from Ismael, we had gotten an estimate from a different painter - that estimate was so high we were ready to do the work ourselves! But when we met with Ismael, he was knowledgeable and easy to talk to. His quote was significantly below the other one we had gotten, and we are glad we were able to work with him. Ismael was always responsive and diligent. He kept the project within the quote even though he had to use a more expensive paint due to our original paint being sold out. He also touched up our closets for free even though he did not have to. And of course, he did a fantastic job with the painting. Stepping into our new house the first time after he finished was so refreshing; it was the first time we really felt like the place was our own. Everything looked wonderful. I contacted Juan to ask him for an estimate to paint a few rooms in a house that was empty, ready…read morefor a move-in. After settling on a very competitive price we accepted to proceed. Sometimes, a low price tag can be indeed very expensive ... Juan started working immediately on the project, he seemed very enthusiastic and assured me he was going to finish the project in just two days of work. I assumed that was very optimistic so after being in contact he called me to tell me it was indeed not going to be done in the projected time. I did not give it much importance to the fact and decided to keep in contact with him. Two days after the initial deadline he assured me he was going to be done that day. When I went visiting the house at the end of that day, it was indeed not done. The project was only half done. Although it looked sort of good. He assured me he would be done the following day ... when I went to check, it was indeed not done. Then, he assured me he would be done the following day when I went there it was ... not done. He did that a couple more times. 5 days past his initial deadline, he was indeed "done". Each trip was 1 hour and 30 minutes of my life wasted on the road. While I was checking the progress, I started noticing that when he was done with one room, he would remove the protections and then go to another room for then later noticing missing details in the unprotected room and paint again without protection. The result was as I was fearing a HUGE MESS! The floors of the house were dirty and stained in multiple places. He tore apart the rug in a section of the house. He left stains of paint on bathroom cabinets and the few furniture pieces that were in the house. Broke a wall-mount and did not put back correctly many of the existing ones. Did not put back together towel hangers. Forgot to remove the paper to protect lights and door hinges but also stained multiple doorknobs. These are only a few samples ... I do not understand his insistence on telling me every day, that he was going to be done and that it was gonna be quick for later not being done without any apology or reasonable explanation. If you are not going to be done that day that's fine just don't give false hopes to your client. Juan tried to make me happy by doing "extras" around the house like painting a shower curtain rod or certain surfaces. Things that even though seem nice are things I never asked him to do and honestly did not want him to do. I asked him to do a very specific set of surfaces which he did not do properly nor on time. I never asked for those extras and I am furious he did not even warn me about the things he decided to do. He painted the house door and I was livid to think that he could break the HOA rules by doing that. He did without even asking me for permission and it could have costed me dearly. On the last day, he was sort of done. Nothing was clean of course and I was noticing all the mistakes he did and went with him through them but honestly, it was so late already, he was slow at fixing things, and at some point, I realized it was better to pay him the agreed amount, ask him back for the keys and tell him to leave. Otherwise, he would have overstayed for 3 more days I guess ... I documented a list with all the defects there were in the house and let him know each one of them and gave him the chance to redeem himself and come at a later time to fix them up. He never replied. Cheap things are indeed expensive sometimes.

They had a SEVERE LACK OF RESPECT FOR OUR HOME. - Lost keys on 2 occasions (we found them on the front porch and back porch, he claims since I found them, he didn't lose them) - Left doors unlocked on 3 occasions ( he claims it was not his crew, that it was my housemates, but twice were on the night he lost the keys and once when the house was empty) - Front gate open 2 times, this is a busy street in Berkeley, so people just walk in - Windows left open 2 times along with a long ladder 15' away from the open windows. - Did not cover our beautiful original hard wood floors with tarp (except when they used MY window curtains), Domingo now says it was not his team, that it is old paint, NOT true! We had to wash the floors 2x's and the stager had remove the rest. - Left trash all over yard, work waste tossed on the ground from the porch, food waste thrown around the yard. - Team members left toilets un-flushed on 2 occasions! Did not discover until next day walk through (it was #2!!!!) disgusting! - Painted around a plant instead of moving the plant from porch (not kidding) he carefully painted around the plant on the porch so when we lifted it, there was a circle. - Left house debris on top of newly landscaped plants 2 times on the same day, after being told the first time they did it again, killed 3 of the newly landscaped plants, didn't replace them. - Over charged on add on items (shame on me for not getting price), he did not update his billing. When I brought to his attention, he added the work he forgot and we paid 2k more. I wanted to negotiate with him due to all of the issues we have had to deal with. He said that if I didn't want to pay he would put a lean on my house. - They did not have their own garbage bags for their own waste. I put garbage cans out for them. They never emptied them and we ended up getting fruit flies! - They tried to put paint cans in my recycling garbage 2 times - Used my duster handle for a paint stir-stick! - Domingo did NOT apologizing for the poor security but instead said "Did anything get stolen? No, then what is your point. All I hear is blah blah blah." (Yes he actually said that!). I told him that I was very disappointed with him but he could care less. I guess he has enough work. I live an hour and a half away so getting there to check on things would have been difficult. Thankfully I had someone watching the place for me! They were able to lock up and check on things. We had a project manager that we went through or we would have got rid of him. She ended up having to go by the house every night for a month to double check the house and yes, she found it unlocked after his brother was working in the afternoon. Overall a very negative experience! Blah blah blah
