I went to a show at Jaxx and it was hot. I left a review on Google saying as much. Nothing hyperbolic or inaccurate. The theater owner proceeded to lie about why the theater was hot, and then lie and say my review was fake. The owner also asked people in the show who might know me to ask me to take down my review. I can't fathom that kind of outsized and frankly invasive reaction to one (accurate) review about the temperature of the theater. All I'll say is, these people must be nightmares to work with. read more

We have had a wonderful experience with Jaxx through the years. My girls have grown with every performance. They recently participated in two conservatories this summer. Jaxx actually used the choreography from the Original Broadway Cast from "A Chorus Line". I was simply blown away! Jaxx teaches their students to cast all fear aside and dig deep into their souls to bring out their best performance. The results are amazing. My girls live, eat, and breathe Jaxx Theatricals. Their experience with Jaxx encouraged them to attend a performing arts/musical theater school. With training from Jaxx they auditioned and were accepted into the Musical Theater Program this year. Jaxx did a performance of "Peter Pan" at my kid's school. It was racist. Specifically, the "Tiger Lily/Brave Girls" portions of the play involved the worst kind of racist caricatures about Native American cultures---all "ughs" and stilted speech and stereotypes. I was really shocked that anyone, much less a whole production company, would think this was OK. I'm sure lots of people (Jaxx included) will think, well, that's just how Peter Pan was written. But that's the problem---Jaxx knowingly opted for a play with racist elements. Jaxx could have avoided this problem at any point, by (1) choosing any one of the dozens of non-racist plays, (2) fixing the racism, e.g., by changing the "Brave Girls" to characters whose race wasn't at issue, or (3) eliminating the offensive portions of the show. That Jaxx chose to move forward with the show as-is reflects, at best, an appalling lack of judgment, and at worst, outright racism. Not only was the play offensive in its own right; it damaged our efforts to raise our kid to respect other cultures, and to recognize that gross, offensive stereotypes aren't OK. In this day and age, the last thing kids need is adults telling them that "Ugga-wugga meatball" is an OK comment to make at/around/about Native American speech, or that one can mimic Native American dress with simply feathers in the hair and day-glo facepaint. The whole thing reflected poorly on Jaxx as a company and on the judgment of the individuals producing the show. read more

I have personally witnessed Jaxx Theatricals change their students perspective of theatre. They are extremely professional and understand theatrical training for youth. I would easily compare their conservatory camp productions to local professional productions. Whether your child is interested in becoming an actor or if they just want to try theatre for the first time, I recommend Jaxx Theatre! read more

My kids have had positive experiences with Jaxx. They have a lot of fun and like the teachers. It is pretty darn expensive (although comparable to other similar programs) and they allow too many kids to enroll per show for our school's small performance space, in my opinion, but the resulting shows are quite good as far as elementary school musicals go. And my kids are happy and proud which is what is most important to me. read more

I really wish I could give a good review (and to be clear, I have no idea about their summer program onsite). The final product of the production at our school was fine - but the lead instructor was simply not acceptable. This isn't my singular experience, but that of multiple parents. He simply didn't understand younger kids. To make matters worse, he spoke to a parent in an extremely unprofessional manner, in front of the child. I'm glad others have had a good experience, because theater is fantastic for kids. Unfortunately, our eldest didn't want to participate this year after her experience (this, after having done many productions with another group and loving it). Hopefully we'll get her in something else and she will find her love for it again. UPDATE: After posting this review, JAXX reached out to try to rectify the situation, which is what one would hope of any business. They also informed me that the person who caused the issue is no longer in that role. This is all positive action, however, it does't change that my daughter still doesn't want to participate again because of her experience. I will revise the rating to three stars, based on the effort made, and I hope all parents just take the moment to make sure that the program they are in makes sense for them. read more

My grand daughter has been doing the Jaxx summer camp for a few years. I always enjoy going to the shows; they're always so entertaining. This last production, I saw my grand daughter practicing to audition for a part. I thought she sounded wonderful. I asked her who she was auditioning for and she said "one of the lead roles." I said to her "you sound wonderful," she then said "yea but so and so will probably get the part." I told her that wasn't a good attitude to go into an audition with and she said "the same people always seem to get the lead roles." After talking to her and seeing the production again, I realized that also. The same group of kids do always seem to get the lead roles. So I wonder... why even go through the audition process if Jaxx already has it planned out on who's going to get the lead roles? My grand daughter has a strong voice and great acting skills but you would never know it because she's never had the opportunity to show it at the Jaxx summer program. I think Jaxx puts on a great production but I also think other kids should have an opportunity at having lead parts. I'm sure my grand daughter is not the only kid that feels this way. read more

My daughter recently did her third show with Jaxx. She learned so much. The Jaxx directors and staff are true professionals who are committed to bringing out the best in every kid. This is not to say they expect everyone to be a Broadway star. They just expect commitment and effort. The shows they put on are fabulous... truly top notch. I think the kids really have a sense of accomplishment and growth. My daughter looks forward to doing more productions with Jaxx. In sum, I recommend very enthusiastically if you have a kid who is into or interested in theater. read more

The instructors are top notch ,young, knowledgeable and experienced and clearly transmit their love of show biz and performing to the kids in a friendly and non-competitive atmosphere! JAXX received a D in my opinion. We had high hopes as it was the company's first production at our school and it sounded like the kids would get a top-notch education in musical theatre. And while the final production itself was indeed technically very well executed, with fun costumes and some great creativity in the staging, the fact that my daughter was pretty much miserable throughout the rehearsal process cast a pall over the whole experience. She went in with a love of musical theatre and excitement for her final production of middle school, but felt completely turned off the process by the end, as did 5 out of 6 of her friends I knew in the cast. JAXX stole their joy. (The one student who was happy with the experience it was the lead, and is already a professional child actor, therefore used to a certain level of bad behavior on set.) Understand that I am a classically trained theatre professional who respects how difficult it is to direct children -- I've done it and could never do it full time! As snarky attitude runs thick with middle-schoolers, I cut the company a lot of slack as the complaints in my carpool soon rolled in. I gave numerous pep talks, told them to stick with it, be attentive and respectful, and to honor their commitment as cast members (unlike some parents, I refused to let my kid quit when she got a small chorus part). However, inexcusably the Director and Choreographer generally operated from a place of bullying in dealing with the students, repeatedly engaging in dramatic fits (throwing chairs no less!!) which was enabled by other senior staff members. JAXX seems to have little understanding that most of the students at our public school ARE REGULAR KIDS -- most DON'T have the profession acting chops a few kids in the cast do. Doing a school play is supposed to be a challenging yet FUN learning experience to stoke a love of theatre, music and camaraderie. That was thwarted by a Director routinely conducting himself childishly, if not out right abusively. For example -- running up to a student and SCREAMING in her face until she cried was completely out of line! Even if she HAD made obnoxious remarks (which, incidentally, she had NOT) terrorizing a student is no way to inspire discipline or respect. It was ego driven and unprofessional (he thought she was mocking him while he was practicing a dance sequence; ironically, she actually was boasting to her friends that she could execute such complex moves herself). Being present for such a display as the Director humiliated her friend, was deeply unnerving for my daughter and other kids sitting near by. Way to go, JAXX, like there isn't already enough fear and disfunction in the world?! JAXX as a company possesses great theatrical skill, but that is meaningless if it results in turning off the majority of the students from wanting to do future productions. They buy in completely to buoying the Hollywood star-treatment track, but the kids in the chorus were not given much to get excited about; they felt like second-class citizens for not meeting the casting skills or desires of those favored for lead roles. I've always told my child while it's nice to get a big part, the chorus has it's own challenges and purpose, and there's as much to be gained from ensemble work -- often it's fun with lots of different numbers and bits to play with. Unfortunately, the argument fell flat this time due to the general attitude JAXX had, focusing on the bit players as an afterthought. Perhaps it was poor management on this show in particular -- JAXX made it clear they are driven to bring in money to fund their program (theatre isn't cheap). I can imagine they under-staff to save salary costs. But what results is a lot of kids getting little bang for their buck compared to the leads. It was also very tasteless how the owners of the company (whom the children had virtually never seen before show nights) spent an embarrassingly long time congratulating *themselves* on stage, with just an offhand comment to the genuinely kind and adept assistants who did most of the ground work & damage control in rehearsals (and were behind the curtain rather than brought out for appreciation). This is yet another program catering to the child actor mill in Los Angeles. Clearly JAXX has zero respect or interest in nurturing a budding interest in those kids who might never be stars. I cannot recommend this program, despite obvious talented (if clearly bitter and jaded) theatre professionals that run it. read more

Jaxx Theatricals is great! My daughter goes every summer for Broadway Bootcamp, their summer program, and loves it! She has also done it with her school in the past. Jaxx has caring, professional, talented amazing staff such as Bonnie, Kathy, Jeremy, JD, Meghan, and others. The shows are professional and incredibly entertaining. The children are so talented and their talents are put to work in these shows. They are put together in a short amount of time but are amazing! Our family loves Jaxx. My older daughter has participated in more than five Jaxx Theatricals productions and my youngest is about to perform in her second. They love being a part of such a special group. The instructors are warm and encouraging and bring out the best in each of the kids. The students learn wonderful choreography, stage presence and acting skills, individualized and group voice instruction and a love of theatre. The students work hard but have tons of fun! I really appreciate that it is a full inclusion, multi-age program. The kids are taught to respect and encourage their peers. It is a wonderful, creative environment for all students. read more

We brought Jaxx to our elementary school in Fall 2013 to take over our after-school theatre arts program. It has been nothing short of a HUGE success. We've struggled in previous years to find the right fit for our school and we finally found it with Jaxx. They are total professionals and stage an incredible production. The teachers are enthusiastic about theatre and fantastic at dealing with the kids. The entire cast leaves weekly rehearsals smiling and telling parents how much fun they had. The final show was spectacular... we had SAG members in the audience and they approached me to comment on how incredible the show was -- the costumes, the make-up, the full sets, the way the kids were totally in character. Parents were blown away. If you're looking for an after-school theatre company, look no further. These guys are at the top of their game. read more

Jaxx is the production group in charge of putting on the musical at our elementary school. My kids just finished their second year in the musical and they've also attended a couple of weeks of the summer camp last year. I can't believe how quickly my children have become attached to the instructors of this theatre group. Jeremy and his staff are extremely professional and serious about their work. Even though we live in the belly of the beast (LA!) re theatrical children, this organization has been welcoming to theatrical students of all abilities. My daughter is now obsessed with performing (who knew!) because of their guidance and the supportive and engaging programing/education that they provide. I love all of the teachers and SO appreciate the organizational support of JD and Jeremy. They roll up their sleeves and teach the kids the dances, pour the fundraising wine, work the door - they do it all. They lead by example. Their expertise shows in the productions. I LOVE their new theater at the MET - it's a real night out for adults. A real theater for kids to feel like they are doing the real thing. I invited only NON-PARENT people to attend their Mary Poppins production and they were excited to be in a real theater situation and were very entertained. Us too. The kids take it seriously.
