Like so many people I could not wait to see the latest Spider Man flick- Brand New Day. And I loved it. Like this movie was so great, it has redefined what I can expect from a Marvel movie, and movies in general. But this review is not about the latest Spider Man flick, it is about Alamo Drafhouse Cinema. And I firmly believe that one of the reasons why I loved Brand New Day so much is because I saw it in Alamo Drafthouse. The movie going experienced was enhanced, dare I say even honored, by this place. And, I might be wrong, but saying that a place made a movie better, is the loudest clap a moviegoer can give to a place that plays movies for goers. I am not sure how I first heard of Alamo Drafthouse, but I selected it as the venue that will host my movie going experience because I fe;t Spider Man deserved the stage. When I got there I was surprised by one sheer fact: I have walked by this place many a time, and I never knew that it was there. Which made me realize in a much broader way that what they say about LA is true--- one will never be bored here because there is always something new to do, and if you cannot find something new, than you might not be looking hard enough. The entrance to the place that holds Alamo also had a reminder that we might all need to hear: "say whatever it is, before it is too late." I entered and the place gave me Bing Bang Theory basement vibes if Howard or Sheldon had the funds to create a luxury movie theathre in their basements. The place was replete with a lot of different posters, and toys, and other memorabilia. If one is a flick nerd, then this place will be their slice of heaven with reclining sheets. I clipped just a few pictures of the different do-thats that this place. For instance, they had a wall full of Spider Man posters. As I walked past them and into my designated theatre I felt more excited to see the motion. Also, they had this area with tables and beers on tap with the Spider Man from the 90's playing. Which makes me believe that Spider Man 97 is coming along the pike cause this cartoon is not quitting. But I thought it was such a great touch to play this cartoon because it is responsible for having so many people fall in love with the wall crawler. It was appropriate nostalgia that frame the movie. So if I have not made it clear, being in this place is a small museum that reminds us why we love movies, beyond them offering escapism when times get tough. The movie rooms were small, quaint, and comfortable. I think most people would agree that a recliner while watching a movie may not be needed, but just like fudge on ice cream, it makes the treat better in a rich kind of way. Additionally, this place offers food delivered to your chair by a server. The besides me had a whole happy hour situation going on. He ordered three margaritas, a hamburger, fries and enjoyed his time. It was all about being good and happy at the movies. This place facilitated that. I was not hungry. But I was inspired by my neighbor to order a treat---- sea salt and vinegar popcorn laced with gold fish, and it was a nice little treat. First, I never had that combination before. It was great! The goldfish cheese taste was deepened. Not in every bite but the ones that were in the bottom of the sea(bowl). The second thing that they did, that another Yelper. comment on was, they "have a no-phone policy." Meaning that when the movie started to play they encouraged us not to use our phone or we might be asked to leave. We were told we can report people on our phone using their phone. And they addressed the irony of it--- and resolved it by saying just don't be a jerk. It as like putting a pretty ribbon bow in a package that was once difficult to wrap. The movie had previews but before that they had a comedian re-cap the journey to this movie and it was funny. The comedian wondered if DR. Strange was also the type of guy that buys liquor for a minor since he did a universe altering spell for one. Then before the movie they showed a video with Holland stating that this Spider Man Movie was created for "you." And to a much lower degree, for sure, this Yelp was written for you too. read more

every since changing over to the QR ordering system, everything else seems to bee in decline, including the menu. the wings have been removed and replaced with "boneless wings" (bite sized chicken tenders) the pretzel has been swapped for a pretzle stick instead of a whole ass pretzle and now the once delightful, thin-crust pizzas seem to have really doughy, chewy new crust these cost cutting measures have me wondering if there is anything good even left on the menu tenders have been dry mozz sticks seem different maybe they are changing over suppliers but food has gone done hill as has the service with the mandatory phone only ordering system... read more

Cinephiles gotta love this place. There's so many cool things here. Where to start? The walls are covered with vintage posters from every genre both foreign and domestic. I could spend a chunk of time just looking at all of them. My daughter and I went to see a movie and thoroughly enjoyed the experience (Note: it's wise to make a reservation). The theaters are small, with comfy recliners, plus they have trays for food. You can order from a barcode with a wide range of menu items. Popcorn comes in a big bowl. Servers bring your order. Before the film starts they screen a series of shorts that relate to the film. We saw the Anthony Bourdain film (Tony), and they played rare clips of him prior to the trailers- very cool. Film showings include current, cult, classics and independent. If that weren't enough they have a bar, lounge, food area, karaoke, and movie rentals. I'll definitely be back. read more

STEPH JUDGEMENT: A special theater for special movies. The hubby and I'd been here a couple of times, but it had been quite a while. Driving all the way up here from Long Beach to watch just any movie is not an option. When we found out about Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair, though, a 4.5 hour extravaganza where they showed the two entire movies back to back, we were in! We had a bit of time to kill (haha) before the movie so we went to the bar to hang out, relax, and take in the atmo (fun decor and merch, vintage arcade games). The bartender was nice and efficient. Once the show was ready to start we headed up that long escalator to the floor with the theaters. It had been so long I'd forgotten all about the wacky, schlocky, awesome sci-fi and horror vintage foreign movie posters that lined the hallway. Almost worth the price of admission alone. Another thing we love about Alamo are the collection of shorts they play before a movie that's related to the upcoming feature. In this case it was the 70s Kung Fu movies that inspired much of the Kill Bill movies and they were so much fun! I hadn't seen a lot of this footage since I was a kid (and the Chemical Brothers video for "Get Yourself High"--look it up, you're gonna love it) so it was quite a treat. I hadn't seen the movies in a long time too so there were a lot of details I'd forgotten about, making for a delightful re-watch. It was one of those moments, one where life seems as if it's a movie. It started off as any other surreal cinematic night. It was a dark, cold and quiet night and I was slithering around the grid of Downtown LA, sloppily entering and exiting various bars, dive and otherwise. It was an artistically romantic but actually pathetic type of night. However, fate & synchronicity would interject herself in this, uneventful evening. I, in a stupor would step off a curb to cross the street, just as a truck driver was veering toward me, too busy eating his Italian Sub to notice me or anything related to driving. Both he and I caught eyes, a millisecond before his impact beat my reaction. I was doomed and I tell you my friends, you do see your life flash before your eyes at the moment of death. However, this night would not be the end for yours truly because just as I was about to realize all the wonders of existence, a hand grabbed my hoodie and jerked me back toward safety and destiny. Interestingly enough, the lady who saved my life was named Destiny. In my trauma and adrenaline filled state I was vulnerable and scared, I gazed into Destiny's eyes for reassurance and the universe spoke back to me. Just then some passerby's, who saw the whole ordeal and who were so ecstatic that I was alive, gave me their movie tickets to the theatre they were just headed toward. I looked down and saw that it was 'Kill BIll: The Whole Bloody Affair,' my second favorite movie of all time behind Pulp Fiction. There I was with two tickets in my hands and Destiny staring me right in the eye. We went to go see that 4 hour 45 minute movie and in that time realized that we were the soul mates that both of us had been searching for our whole lives. Not to mention, both of us found a cool little theatre in the middle of DTLA that has drink and food service to your seats. Stay searching for Destiny and a good movie my friends.... read more

We were directed to get our digital tickets scanned in for physical tickets, and we were off to theater 1. Inside the theater, we tried to order via QR code but the reception must have been spotty, we wound up ordering with the server. Excellent service all around, we ordered a cocktail, a beer, and a pizza, everything was delicious. Total was about $60 after taxes and tip. All part of the experience. We parked across the street from the plaza for $15, but probably should have parked inside plaza to get validation. We'll definitely get back over to Alamo, the movie experience is special. I love the Alamo! Definitely a very unique movie theater experience with smaller and more intimate theater rooms, full on restaurant style menu, and top notch service! I love going here for premieres and to be honest whenever I'm craving their food- their truffle herb parmesan popcorn and chocolate chip cookies are amazing! Also there are seasonal and movie specific menu sometimes which are always fun to try. They host a lot of movie marathons and other events that I have yet to check out, but it feels authentic to the cinema crowd which is great. Went here on a Saturday night. This was our first visit. There is a lot to like about this venue. The seats are very comfortable. The screen seems a good size for the room and you can order a full meal and. All kinds of beverages, including alcoholic. They have popcorn galore with all kinds of difference add-ins. The menu is pretty much what I would describe as bar food. It's hamburgers, fries, nachos, chicken tenders, pizzas, and such. We got the bottomless popcorn, which was huge and did not need to be refilled. That would be silly. Also order the mozzarella stick and the boneless wings. They have a great selection of beers, which we sampled. Very cozy setting. The downside to this was the explanation that was personally delivered to us at the trailer point of the show. It was a little loud and upfront, and I don't know. I guess they don't want people to use their phones or they're going to shoot you. The ironic part of this is of course that you have to order your food through the phone. As someone who works on phone applications all day, I have to say their app is pretty poor. I did have to set it up but maybe if I come again it's going to be able to just bypass all that payment page headache because it I took 10 minutes to set it up. I'm also unsure why they needed my email and phone number except for marketing which I definitely hate and you could not take that out so that was something I don't like. You shouldn't have to give up your privacy to order food at any venue. I missed a few trailers so I was a bit anxious about about its failures. We also got to hear everybody else get the loud spiel delivered to their seats. There is a bar upfront. And apparently you can also rent DVDs. That might be nice for someone who lives in the neighborhood. The service during the show was very well done and as unobtrusive as it possibly could be. If I lived closer, I might go here again, but as it stands, I don't think I have a lot of reasons to come back. The food was fine. But you're not coming here for the food I'm assuming. We were super excited to check out this theater for the first time, but unfortunately the service was incredibly rude and disappointing. There were four of us, and since drinks are ordered through a QR code at your seat, we ordered five drinks total before the movie started so we wouldn't have to keep using our phones during the film. An employee came over and told us we had ordered a "shit ton of drinks," that it was "unacceptable," and that we were only supposed to order one drink at a time. We apologized and explained that it was our first time and we genuinely didn't know the policy. Instead of simply explaining it professionally, she was extremely condescending and later came back to tell us they would be "watching and evaluating" our drinking levels and might cut us off, even though we were completely sober and not causing any issues. She also made rude comments while checking the IDs of two people in our group who had recently turned 21, saying "just barely turned 21" and "you too? oh my gosh" in a very judgmental tone. I completely understand having alcohol policies, and we had no problem following them once they were explained and we apologized. The issue was the disrespectful and embarrassing way we were spoken to. It really ruined our mood on what was supposed to be a fun first experience. read more

I've always loved Alamo Drafthouse because it offered something different from other movie theaters. The no-phone policy and retro, old-school movie experience made it feel like you were truly there to enjoy the film and be present in the moment. The paper menus and traditional ordering system added to that experience and helped make every visit feel special. Unfortunately, my most recent visit was disappointing. Alamo has switched to QR code ordering on your phone, which completely takes away from the phone-free atmosphere that made this theater stand out in the first place. My boyfriend and I don't get to go to the movies often, so we were really looking forward to that classic Alamo experience. Instead, it felt like just another theater asking guests to be on their phones. The service also felt very impersonal. The servers seemed robotic, simply dropping off items and walking away. We were given drinks without straws, and there was very little interaction or attention to detail. The drinks themselves were honestly not good at all. I also ordered chicken tenders and fries and was surprised to learn that dipping sauces cost extra. While 50 cents isn't a huge amount, it feels odd that sauce isn't included with a meal like that. The movie itself was great, but what made Alamo special wasn't just the movie... it was the overall experience. Sadly, that unique feeling seems to be fading. The theatre is nice, love the variety of beer. Howeverrrrrr, there was no one available at the end to validate the parking. The credits were on for the Spider-Man movie... meaning the movie isn't over till after the credits because it's a marvel movie and we all know that there's always something after the credits but I guess the employees don't know that because they just came right up and started throwing our things/ leftovers away. I had a soda I was planning to take to go but it was thrown away, my sister had a beer she was working on and they poured leftover sprite in it and my friend had popcorn and candy they just grabbed and threw away. We received the beer right away, but had to as 4 TIMES for our popcorn. We didn't get the popcorn until a full hour into the movie. Movie-Lover Hallway: I immediately loved walking through the halls and seeing all of the framed movie posters from different eras, as well as current movies, very cool! Definitely leave time to look at all of the posters, because there are plenty, even movie memorabilia! Silence, Please: I love that you write out your order from the menu with the pencil & paper provided, and afterwards, you press the button & a server arrives! After all, silence is key during a movie and there were no interruptions with talking throughout as our servers picked up our orders! Loved it! Food | Drinks | Snacks: Friends let me taste their drinks! The wine was perfect & the other drink was strong! Ha! Funny note, I wrote out my order, thinking it was freshly baked cookies... but it turned out to be packaged cookies in a bag, which was still delicious! Hahaha! Seating: Unfortunately, the reclining seats were peeling in a major way. The seats definitely need to be updated. Still cozy! Customer Service: Super friendly throughout! I was even given a unique lollipop when we checked in, as it was the last one! This is still my favorite movie theater, and I'm keeping my rating at five stars for now, but I'm concerned about some of the recent changes. One of the things that made this theater special was the full-service experience. The 80s movie-themed atmosphere, extensive food and drink menu, and attentive servers made it feel like much more than a typical theater. Recently, they've switched to online ordering, and it has really changed the experience. Instead of quickly looking through a menu and placing an order with a server, you can end up spending much of the 30-minute pre-show period staring at your phone. That defeats part of the reason I come here in the first place. I've also noticed that the menu has been scaled back significantly. Some of my favorite items, including the breakfast sandwiches and other offerings, have disappeared. I used to recommend this theater not only because of its movie-loving atmosphere but also because of the quality and variety of the food. I don't come here for standard movie-theater snacks. I come for the great food, good beer and cocktails, nostalgic atmosphere, and overall experience. If the new ownership continues cutting back on what made this place unique, they risk losing loyal regulars. At that point, I might as well go to AMC if I'm just looking for typical movie-theater food. I hope management listens to customer feedback and preserves the qualities that made this theater stand out. read more

Alamo Drafthouse is hands-down the best movie experience out there. Once you walk in, you immediately feel that this place was made for real movie lovers. What sets it apart is their zero-tolerance policy for talking or phone use--it's strict in the best way possible. You can actually enjoy the movie without distractions, and that alone makes every ticket worth it. On top of that, the food and drinks are excellent. Being able to order right from your seat while still catching every scene is a game-changer. The staff always nails it--quick, quiet, and friendly. We had Truffle Parm Tossed with black truffle, herbs, and popcorn. And those pre-shows? They're awesome--no annoying ads, just fun and clever clips that fit the movie perfectly. Well I stopped by because I live around the corner. I was asked 2 times to not talk in the movie. Because I asked my wife if she wanted popcorn. Unfortunately it was the person next to me complaining. Manager came and brought a note asking to not talk. I threw it away. Then the manager came down again and literally stood next to our friends behind us to see if we were talking. Looking for any excuse to kick us out. Mind you I wasn't talking. When I am at a movie and I am talking to my wife I never expected to have this type of response. Little did I know a lady next to me who waited after the movie to tell me shame on you for talking waited out front. Then a customer started talking back to this crazy person. Haylee asked to step outside. We got Aaron Tecosky information and we are awaiting a call. Needless to say we live 2 blocks away and we will never come back. The true measure of success in a business comes in how they resolve your problems when there is a mistake made that affects the customer experience. We have been to this Alamo many times over the years and have always had a great experience. Located off the metro at 7th in The Bloc, this theatre has a dozen screens with high quality seating and dining options and solid staff The menu changes regularly to keep things fresh and they are routinely updating ways for customers to connect t with staff for food and drink. Tonight we saw Tron Aries and had a pizza not show up. After almost an hour we inquired and then 20 minutes later the pizza and salad showed up. The food was great but wow, an hour? Management was great to comp us and apologize and later mentioned the pizza and salad were never input in the beginning which is why it never came. There was some mix up on salad dressing and poor communication which the manager promised to address. All in all we felt taken care of and they went an extra step to offer free snack pass on our next visit. Dinner on them and snacks the next time felt good. This is an our favorite chain and we have a season pass here. Food is consistently good and served quickly. Still a definite strong referral. read more

The food was horrible, the QR code is terrible the hospitality is terrible. I'm from Texas and after Alamo was bought by another corporation I knew it would change but not this bad. Fix this theater. It's a hidden gem. It's on the 3rd floor . Once you go inside.. you see animation art such as marvel and large movie decor thruout the hall. Once I got in the theatre.. tables connected to each seat. The plush seat.. was super cushy and comfy as I reclined. The waiter went to each of us that had their light on. And we ordered on their deluxe menu... shakes.. popcorn with truffles . The popcorn was served in a big metal bowl.. and the unique flavors offered.. barbeque.. truffles. They had hot dogs.. burgers.. chicken tenders... alcohol. Cocktails.. the works. The menu a bit pricey about 18 bucks per entree .. but worth it. There's a bar outside of the theatre . Just so nice. Will def come back. read more

The theater itself is above average -- 6/10. The food and alcohol menu gets the same rating, 6/10. But what makes this place EXCELLENT is the outstanding customer service. David the concierge is 11/10 -- and I'm not exaggerating. The manager is a solid 9/10. Long story short: we didn't purchase our tickets online and tried buying them in person, but the kiosk showed only one ticket left. Instead of simply saying "sorry, we're full," they went the extra mile. After the movie started at 7 PM, they checked again around 7:15 for any no-shows. There were seats available, so they sold us the tickets and got us in. That level of follow-up and effort is rare these days. I used to love the Alamo Drafthouse, even coming out to drive and park in Downtown LA was worth it to see a movie here. There's a good drink and food selection and they usually have a lot to do to reach out to the cinema going community, it's always been a nice vibe. They have had good selections in what to play, but the recent updates to their food ordering is counterintuitive to the original spirit of what Drafthouse was known for. This isn't against the staff, they've always been helpful and courteous as long as you followed their rules. Yesterday was our first time at Alamo Drafthouse in Downtown. I don't want to be repetitive like the other reviews, but yes, you park in the Bloc garage and parking is validated so it comes out to $4.There are signs leading to the theater, so it's pretty straightforward. The theater itself is in a nice area and it's a pretty cool place, filled with posters and dvd rentals. The restrooms are gender neutral, so it's toilets in private stalls on one side and urinals on the other side. I've never been to a restroom like this but it wasn't awkward or anything. We arrived pretty early so decided to go check out our theater and the menu. Our movie was at 9:20 PM but we weren't really in the mood for a huge order so just wanted a few things to munch on. We decided on the cold brew boozy shake, churro popcorn, bottomless (butter) popcorn, some candy, and water. Our server was very friendly and accommodating, and everyone we dealt with at the theater was honestly great. Unfortunately the churro popcorn was not the best. The popcorn was stale and it was topped with a few mini crispy churro pieces and some cinnamon sugar I believe. The shake was good, definitely heavy on the alcohol, but had a nice flavor. We waited for our regular popcorn for a while and realized it was never coming lol. At the end, when we got our check, we weren't charged for the regular popcorn so we just forgot about it. The seats were comfortable, reclining, and the theater was nice but could've been a bit cooler (temperature wise) for me, personally. The audio was a bit inconsistent at times but it could have been just from the movie itself. Overall, we had a pretty good experience but regretted not getting more food, and would want to try more off the menu next time. We would also try the popcorn again to give it one more chance - maybe the regular butter or another flavor. I'll update my review the next time we go :) read more

The Alamo Drafthouse in DTLA recently reupholstered their severely worn-out seats, so I can finally cross that off my list of complaints. I've been enjoying their Season Pass for almost a year now, and they updated their plans, which cost more but no longer include the service fee...it means I have to watch more movies to make it worth it. The reclining seats and tableside service--where they'll bring your food and drinks, including cocktails--make the experience feel much more comfortable. I do spend quite a bit, but it's worth it. Pro tip: Buy their gift cards from Costco for a discount, though be prepared for staff to enter the card numbers manually--it's a minor hassle. Otherwise, as a Downtown Los Angeles resident, I find this theater to be a great spot. They even have a bar that occasionally hosts karaoke and trivia nights. read more

When you walk into the theatre lobby, it feels like you've been teleported back in time to a retro 80s theatre. It's such an iconic place to enjoy a film. In the heart of DTLA and right next to the metro station, it's a great place to either park or take the public transit. The food and service is great, cocktails are really fun, especially the boozy shakes! The watermelon margarita has a sweet and smoky taste to it. read more

This theatre is so cool and retro. Throwback movie posters and a great bar downstairs. The seats are comfy and the food was good. During the movie you're able to order from a menu and you push a button and the staff come to you. I will def come back, we watched sinners and Tuesdays they have discounts. I've wanted to come here for years! Glad I finally visited! Tiny theaters, but good quality. The legs of the seats go up, but the backrest doesn't go back at all. Still comfortable, I guess. Nachos were bomb! I also like the dvd selection with the dvd player rental. The bar is also nice. Little arcade section. I'd def visit again! They validate for parking. The most you'd pay for a whole day is $9. read more

WTF happened to this place? Everything I used to love about Alamo has been replaced with some gross money grabbing tactics. A few grievances to reiterate that many other people complained about: 1. Mobile ordering is janky and inconvenient to use compared to the old pen and paper system. 2. Service: Uhhh basically non-existent? It took 30-40 min to receive my food, and there were no follow ups with staff. 3. 20% automatic tip: This one's pretty egregious because what do you mean I'm automatically being charged for tip when I'm hardly being serviced and my food BARELY comes warm??? wtf???? 4. Food: As others noted food has noticeably dropped in quality and quantity. Again, comes super late and room temp. All of this feels scummy to me as this new system hasn't really been disclosed to us, as service staff in the past have been very accommodating and transparent. And for a theater that's historically anti-phone, tell me why you ONLY get the notif to close your tab without the auto tip through text? Again, it's scummy to me how this new system isn't explained transparently by staff or the information on screen. Won't be back here anytime soon unless things change back. read more

Hey now say now! *in Kendrick's voice* Haha! I finally did the "solo movie date" idea here. I clearly observed why people enjoying going to the movie theater alone and it's definitely like watching a movie solo at home except a bigger screen in your view and some strangers nearby. Sinners was my go to movie when it came out so I've waited around 2-3 weeks so the theater wont be as crowded. When I told the cashier it was my first time here, she made me feel welcomed and gave me the run down of pointing things out and how to navigate the theater. Excellent customer service with enthusiasm in her voice! She was for sure in a positive mood! Alamo was "the dine in at your recliner seat" experience and I loved it. My server stopped by my seat, greeted me and gave me tips on their menu. I kept it simple...ordered fries and a glass of their house prosecco. I felt relax, tuned in and the movie was great. The service overall here was great so of course I'll be back! Ps. I heard they host events here so I gotta check those out too. read more
